This paper considers the design of iterative learning control laws for systems whose state-space model matrices are functions of a vector of varying parameters. The repetitive process setting is exploited to develop a linear matrix inequality based procedure for computing gain-scheduling feedback and feedforward (learning) controllers. These controllers guarantee acceptable dynamics along the trials and ensure monotonic convergence of the trial-to-trial error dynamics, respectively. A simulation example is given to illustrate the theoretical developments.

The problem of anonymization of car GPS traces is addressed. Unlike the existing approaches, we propose to preserve anonymity of the whole road graph, while performing accurate GPS location projection onto that graph edges. Projected locations are denoted by their distances from graph vertices, which allows to perform many analytical tasks, in a graph abstracted from physical node locations. With adequately selected subset of samples, the released data will still be enough to perform refined analysis, e.g. of the driving style, while preserving the anonymity of the graph. Possible deanonymization attacks and countermeasures are discussed shortly. © 2015 ACM.

Ladder circuits are a member of a class of spatially interconnected systems and can be considered as two-dimensional (2D) systems where information is propagated in two separate directions, i.e., in time and space represented by a node number. In previous work, results on the modeling, stability analysis and stabilization of such systems were given but in some cases a descriptor-like system model can result and hence these earlier results cannot be applied. This paper gives new results on the stability and stabilization of examples described by such a descriptor system model.

Discrete linear repetitive processes operate over a subset of the upper-right quadrant of the 2D plane. They arise in the modeling of physical processes and also the existing systems theory for them can be used to effect in solving control problems for other classes of systems, including iterative learning control design. This paper uses a version of the Kaiman-YakubovichPopov (KYP) Lemma to develop new linear matrix inequality (LMI) based stability conditions and a control law design algorithm in the presence of polytopic uncertainty in the process model. The new algorithm results in a static output feedback control law that ensures robust stability along the pass and allows control requirements to be enforced over finite frequency ranges. Furthermore, a frequency-partitioning approach can lead to less conservative conditions for robust control. A numerical example to illustrate the application of the new design algorithm concludes the paper.

The paper explores pole placement techniques to facilitate synthesis of decoherence free subsystems via coherent quantum feedback control. We discuss limitations of the conventional 'open loop' approach and propose a constructive feedback design methodology for decoherence free subsystem engineering. It captures a quite general dynamic coherent feedback structure which allows systems with decoherence free modes to be synthesized from components which do not have such modes.

A control algorithm designed to increase the economic performance of the air/water heat pump is described. The heat pump itself has very fast dynamics when compared with the heated object; therefore the controller uses static pump modeling to derive the control action. The algorithm controls the compressor in order to stabilize the temperature of water flowing out of the condenser and the expansion valve in order to minimize superheat and fulfill the superheat constraints. The algorithm provides stable operation of the heat pump and ensures increase of the Coefficient of Performance (COP) for different conditions in which the controlled device operates (in a wide range of air temperature). An average 10% improvement of COP when compared to the catalogue data of the tested pump with standard controller was achieved. The control algorithm was successfully implemented in the ecoTRONIC200 microprocessor controller.

Reservoir engineering is the term used in quantum control and information technologies to describe manipulating the environment within which an open quantum system operates. Reservoir engineering is essential in applications where storing quantum information is required. From the control theory perspective, a quantum system is capable of storing quantum information if it possesses a so-called decoherence free subsystem (DFS). This paper explores pole placement techniques to facilitate synthesis of decoherence free subsystems via coherent quantum feedback control. We discuss limitations of the conventional ‘open loop’ approach and propose a constructive feedback design methodology for decoherence free subsystem engineering. This paper presents a unique analysis of post-mortem human iris recognition. Post-mortem human iris images were collected at the university mortuary in three sessions separated by approximately 11 hours, with the first session organized from 5 to 7 hours after demise. Analysis performed for four independent iris recognition methods shows that the common claim of the iris being useless for biometric identification soon after death is not entirely true. Since the pupil has a constant and neutral dilation after death (the so called “cadaveric position”), this makes the iris pattern perfectly visible from the standpoint of dilation. We found that more than 90% of irises are still correctly recognized when captured a few hours after death, and that serious iris deterioration begins approximately 22 hours later, since the recognition rate drops to a range of 13.3-73.3% (depending on the method used) when the cornea starts to be cloudy. There were only two failures to enroll (out of 104 images) observed for only a single method (out of four employed in this study). These findings show that the dynamics of post-mortem changes to the iris that are important for biometric identification are much more moderate than previously believed. To the best of our knowledge, this paper presents the first experimental study of how iris recognition works after death, and we hope that these preliminary findings will stimulate further research in this area.

Flow separation can be detrimental in a variety of aerospace applications. A traditional method of preventing or delaying flow separation has been static vortex generators. They are effective in mitigating flow separation, however, they can impose a drag penalty during certain flow regimes, e.g., when the flow is not separated. An alternative to a static vortex generator (SVG) is a dynamic vortex generator (DVG), which can be deployed into the flow when needed and retracted when not needed. Additionally, a DVG can be oscillated about a mean height with a specified amplitude and frequency to target certain frequencies that may be present in the flow, which can make it more effective. An experimental and numerical investigation was conducted on a modified NACA 0012 airfoil with flap deflections of 20° and 30° to study the effectiveness of VGs on flow reattachment over the flap. Simulations were conducted using the unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations together with the Spalart-Allmaras turbulent model. In the simulations, flap deflections of 20° and 30° were considered, while the experiments focused on the flap deflection of 20°. For the flap deflection of 30°, both the baseline and SVG cases were simulated while for the flap deflection of 20° only a baseline simulation was carried out. For the SVG, a parametric numerical study was performed in which chord-wise location and height of the VGs were varied to guide the experiments in terms of VG location and height. SVGs were found to increase the lift-to-drag ratio and reduce fluctu-ating forces. Taller VGs were found to be more effective while VGs placed at XVG = 0.53 resulted in a similar effectiveness at two Reynolds numbers. For the flap deflection of 20°, experimental and numerical data showed a good agreement for the baseline case. This paper presents a unique study of post-mortem human iris recognition and the first known to us database of near-infrared and visible-light iris images of deceased humans collected up to almost 17 days after death. We used four different iris recognition methods to analyze the dynamics of iris quality decay in short-term comparisons (samples collected up to 60 hours after death) and long-term comparisons (for samples acquired up to 407 hours after demise). This study shows that post-mortem iris recognition is possible and occasionally works even 17 days after death. These conclusions contradict a promulgated rumor that iris is unusable shortly after decease. We make this dataset publicly available to let others verify our findings and to research new aspects of this important and unfamiliar topic. We are not aware of any earlier papers offering post-mortem human iris images and such comprehensive analysis employing four different matchers.
