Accurate estimation of battery state of charge (SOC) is critical for efficient and safe battery applications. The measurement uncertainties of sensors, including measurement noises and sensor bias will affect the estimation accuracy inevitably. Therefore, quantifying the relationship between the sensor measurement uncertainties and the SOC estimation errors and seeking better SOC estimation methods has been a hot topic of research. In this paper, model errors and SOC estimation errors under measurement noise and sensor bias are derived. The resulting analyses can be used to assess the robustness of the SOC estimates. In addition, an adaptive observer-based SOC estimation method for lithium-ion batteries is proposed to cope with the measurement uncertainty. Simulation experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2023 IEEE.

Kernels are scheduled on Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) in the granularity of GPU warp, which is a bunch of threads that must be scheduled together. When executing kernels with conditional branches, the threads within a warp may execute different branches sequentially, resulting in a considerable utilization loss and unpredictable execution time. This problem is known as the control flow divergence. In this work, we propose a novel method to predict threads' execution path before the launch of the kernel by deploying a branch prediction network on the GPU's tensor cores, which can efficiently parallel run with the kernels on CUDA cores, so that the divergence problem can be eased in a large extent with the lowest overhead. Combined with a well-designed thread data reorganization algorithm, this solution can better mitigate GPUs' control flow divergence problem. © 2024 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s). Driven by ubiquitous digitalization and cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, there is a high interest in research on the security of cyber-physical systems. If an attacker gains access to protected and sensitive information, such as the internal states of a control system, this is considered a breach of confidentiality. Access to sensitive information can be the first step in a larger cyber-attack scheme, such as a stealthy false data injection attack. Considering process and measurement noise in the plant, existing research investigated when an attacker equipped with a Kalman filter can perfectly estimate the internal controller states if the attacker has access to plant measurements and all model parameters. For this estimate to converge, the controller is required to have stable poles. In this paper, we show that if the attacker has access to the control inputs instead of the plant measurements, the controller needs to have stable zeros. Additionally, we demonstrate that an attacker equipped with an Unknown Input Observer, using tools from delayed system inversion, can get a delayed yet perfect estimate of the controller states from the control inputs without knowledge of the plant's parameters and noise characteristics. Lastly, we present simulation results from a three-tank system to showcase the differences in controller state estimation. © 2024 IEEE.

Liver is a vital organ that performs various essential functions. Liver cancer can have severe implications on human health, including death. To reduce the mortality rate, early detection of hepatic cancer is imperative. For rapid diagnosis and treatment planning, developing a computerized system that can aid in the diagnosis is essential. In this paper, machine learning and deep learning methods were compared for identifying abnormal liver from computed tomography images. The liver was segmented using DeepLabv3 + network. The machine learning method used, histogram and gray level co-occurrence matrix for feature extraction and support vector machine for classification. The deep learning methods investigated were ResNet, ShuffleNet and EfficientNet. Accuracy, sensitivity and specificity were used for performance evaluation. The results of our experiments showed that the deep learning methods outperformed the machine learning methods. Among the deep learning models, EfficientNet gave the highest accuracy of 87%. As future work, the abnormal liver can be further classified into benign and malignant classes. © 2024 The Author(s).

In this note, we present the synthesis of secure-by-construction controllers that address safety and security properties simultaneously in cyber-physical systems. Our focus is on studying a specific security property called opacity, which characterizes the system's ability to maintain plausible deniability of its secret behavior in the presence of an intruder. These controllers are synthesized based on a concept of so-called (augmented) control barrier functions. We propose conditions that facilitate the construction of the desired (augmented) control barrier functions and their corresponding secure-by-construction controllers. To compute these functions, we propose an iterative scheme that leverages iterative sum-of-square programming techniques. This approach enables efficient computation of these functions, particularly for polynomial systems. Finally, we validate the effectiveness of our results through a case study of a vehicle. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

This paper proposes a semi-Markov model of telecommunication network (TCN). The variant of dynamic traffic adaptive control of queuing system as a special case of TCN is considered. The main purpose of control is to minimize the average cost per unit of time to service the incoming flow of information (packets). This takes into account the different bandwidth of the channels, the processing speed of information in the channel and the information capacity of the buffers. The approach to the organization of dynamic control taking into account noise immunity (information reliability) and information security is discussed. © 2024 IEEE.

One way to increase solar photovoltaic penetration in the grid is management of voltage fluctuations. This is because a photovoltaic plant cannot be interconnected to the grid if it causes voltage violations. Voltage violation is where voltage exceeds the acceptable range. Often, grid operators request photovoltaic plant owners to regulate voltage sufficiently with expensive and space-consuming static Var compensators. Unfortunately, this sometimes makes the project less feasible. This paper argues that there are better ways to regulate voltage. We ran a simulation with a 70 MWp photovoltaic plant as an addition to the grid. Without voltage regulation, voltage violations were found to be significant. This paper found that oversizing the inverter sufficiently would remove all voltage violations without deploying a static Var compensator. This is often a cheaper and space-saving solution for voltage management. This paper argues that economics and spatial efficiency of reactive power compensation devices is key to increasing photovoltaic penetration. © 2023 IEEE.

The structure of microgrids and the models considered have a significant impact on the planning and operational outcomes of micro grids. Additionally, micro grids encompass various models of primary equipment, including wind, solar, diesel, and storage, while the demand-side response mechanisms are continually being refined. This necessitates the construction of diverse load types, thereby increasing the complexity of micro grid planning and highlighting the need for further research into microgrid planning models. This paper presents various typical mathematical models for microgrids, employs spectral clustering algorithms to obtain representative scenarios, and constructs a unified planning model for microgrids. Furthermore, it elucidates the model adjustment methods under different planning objectives and conducts case analyses of microgrid planning issues. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper studies efficient algorithms for dynamic curing policies and the corresponding network design problems to guarantee fast extinction of epidemic spread in a Markov process-based susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) model. We provide a computationally efficient curing algorithm based on the curing policy proposed by Drakopoulos, Ozdaglar, and Tsitsiklis (2014). Since the corresponding optimization problem is NP-hard, finding optimal policies is intractable for large graphs. We provide approximation guarantees on the curing budget of the proposed dynamic curing algorithm. To avoid the waiting period included in the original curing policy, we study network design problems to reduce the total infection rate by deleting edges or reducing the weight of edges. To this end, we provide algorithms with provable guarantees. In summary, the proposed curing and network design algorithms together provide an effective and computationally efficient approach that mitigates SIS epidemic spread in networks. © 2024 IEEE.
