Protocol Reverse engineering (PRE) serves as the foundation for numerous security analysis techniques, such as vulnerability mining and intrusion detection, etc. The PRE analysis precision can directly affect the accuracy of these downstream techniques. The network-trace-based PRE technique has become the mainstream PRE technique attributed to its ease of implementation. However, without the prerequisite of additional dedicated devices or knowledge of information, the analysis precision of existing network-trace-based PRE methods is often achievable at only byte or half-byte level but not the fine-grained bit-level, which makes it increasingly challenging to meet the precision requirements of those downstream security applications. In this work, we propose a fine-grained PRE scheme, named FineBID, which makes the identification capability in a fine-grained manner for existing network-trace-based PRE methods into bit-level fields. FineBID follows the global characteristics of protocol fields and constructively models the bit-level field identification problem as a multi-objective decision model, which thus effectively overcomes the insufficient representativeness of bit-level fields’ local characteristics. Then, the multi-objective decision model is solved to obtain the Pareto solution set for different field segmentation levels, and the utility value per bit is further computed. The utility value can be used as the immediate indicator to determine whether each bit is a field boundary or not. Meanwhile, we propose an Actual Ground Truth that is more in line with the actual usage of each bit. With extensive experiments on the Internet, wireless, and industrial protocols, we affirm that FineBID can not only significantly reduce the search space for Ground Truth or Actual Ground Truth with a space reduction of 95.3% compared to exhaustive search, but also identify Ground Truth or Actual Ground Truth more accurately than other similar methods. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

In text mining and Natural Language Processing (NLP), extracting emotions from textual data is gaining rapid attraction. The proliferation of online content and the freedom of expression on social media platforms has compelled the advancement of more sophisticated methods for the automatic identification of unwanted content. The One-Dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (1D-CNN) performs best for feature extraction, while the Long Short-Term Memory Network (LSTM) is well-known for extracting sequential features and classification of textual data. This study proposes a novel solution by combining 1D-CNN with LSTM. Utilizing a context-aware model, this study aims to enhance the detection of immoral posts, including hate speech and other forms of immoral content on social media platforms. Various posts are extracted from social media, which are then processed using Glove word embedding models. It depicts the word representations in the text, which yields the form of a real-valued vector determining the words' meaning. The 1D convolution utilizes a filter window over the input time-series data to extract features. Relying on the acquired parameters of the filters, they act as feature extractors. This feature extraction technique allows the model to distinguish detailed patterns and nuances from the textual contents of posts. The sequential processing capabilities of the LSTM network enable an in-depth examination of the text, capturing temporal relationships and context, which is critical for successful content categorization. To validate the proposed model, we utilized a benchmark dataset, called the Twitter dataset. The proposed model achieved the highest accuracy of 95.37% and outperforms state-of-the-art works. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

With recent advancements in industrial robots, educating students in new technologies and preparing them for the future is imperative. However, access to industrial robots for teaching poses challenges, such as the high cost of acquiring these robots, the safety of the operator and the robot, and complicated training material. This paper proposes two low-cost platforms built using open-source tools like Robot Operating System (ROS) and its latest version ROS 2 to help students learn and test algorithms on remotely connected industrial robots. Universal Robotics (UR5) arm and a custom mobile rover were deployed in different life-size testbeds, a greenhouse, and a warehouse to create an Autonomous Agricultural Harvester System (AAHS) and an Autonomous Warehouse Management System (AWMS). These platforms were deployed for a period of 7 months and were tested for their efficacy with 1,433 and 1,312 students, respectively. The hardware used in AAHS and AWMS was controlled remotely for 160 and 355 hours, respectively, by students over a period of 3 months. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

The battery management system ensures the safe operation of electric vehicles (EVs) by detecting abnormalities in the battery energy storage system. However, the extensive and widely dispersed data in EV battery data, along with the presence of users’ private details, raise a demand for effective anomaly detection and privacy protection. To tackle those two challenges, we propose Fed-Autoformer, a distributed anomaly detection architecture based on real vehicle charging data to detect battery anomalies and protect privacy. Thus, we first propose a novel anomaly detection model for EV charging data based on the Autoformer encoder architecture. In particular, it enables an autocorrelation attention mechanism to extract and consider the intrinsic correlation of battery data features (e.g., voltage, current, state of charge (SOC), etc.) for anomaly detection. In addition, we introduce a federated learning architecture to protect the privacy of battery charging data and improve the federated learning training process based on the differences between vehicle batteries in charging stations to ensure detection accuracy while protecting the privacy of EV charging data. Finally, we comprehensively analyze the feasibility and effectiveness of our proposed architecture using a real EV charging dataset. Our proposed federated learning approach for EV battery anomaly detection not only effectively protects privacy through federated learning but also improves the accuracy by 3.2% compared to most mainstream time series anomaly detection models. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Study of orography–MJO interaction and its impact on rainfall variability in West Sumatra

Abstract: This study examines the impact of orography and the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) on rainfall patterns in West Sumatra, Indonesia, using ERA5 reanalysis data. We analyzed variables such as precipitation, zonal and vertical winds, vertically integrated moisture convergence (VIMC), Froude number, lifting condensation level (LCL), level of free convection (LFC), level of non-buoyancy (LNB), convective available potential energy (CAPE), and convective inhibition (CINH), focusing on MJO phases 3 (MJO-3) and 4 (MJO-4). The ERA5 data was validated with observations from the Agam Observation Station, including data from the equatorial atmosphere radar, X-band Doppler Radar, optical rain gauge, microwave radiometer, and radiosonde. Our analysis, covering 22 years (2001–2022) of hourly data from five locations at varying elevations, reveals that topography significantly influences rainfall distribution, with windward slopes and mountain peaks receiving the most rainfall. This pattern closely aligns with VIMC, indicating that moisture convergence is a key driver of rainfall variability. MJO-3 significantly enhances rainfall by reducing zonal wind speeds, thereby increasing moisture convergence, while MJO-4 has a minimal impact, with increased zonal wind speeds limiting moisture convergence. The study concludes that VIMC patterns, influenced by wind dynamics, are central to understanding rainfall variability in West Sumatra’s mountainous terrain under different MJO phases. Research highlights: Orography strongly influences rainfall in West Sumatra, with the most precipitation on windward slopes and peaks, linked to vertically integrated moisture convergence (VIMC). MJO-3 boosts rainfall by reducing zonal wind speeds, which enhances moisture convergence and emphasizes wind dynamics in rainfall variability. Computational imaging based on single-photon detection: a survey

The rapid advancements in single-photon detectors with picosecond timing resolution over the past decade have significantly driven the development of time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) for computational imaging applications, including bioimaging and remote sensing. In this review, we utilize the CiteSpace tool to create knowledge maps and perform a bibliometric analysis of this research area. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive overview of the key challenges associated with computational imaging using temporal single-photon counting. We also highlight how these challenges have been addressed under extreme conditions to establish a reference model for future imaging solutions. We examine the performance evaluation parameters of single-photon detectors to enhance the understanding of detector array scaling and their application in constructing efficient computational imaging systems. Lastly, we aim to elucidate the current technical challenges in single-photon detector-based computational imaging and explore their potential future developments.

Joint Sensing and Computation Incentive Mechanism for Mobile Crowdsensing Networks: A Multiagent Reinforcement Learning Approach

Mobile crowdsensing (MCS) is a novel sensing paradigm by utilizing mobile users (MUs) to collect data from environment. Considering the finite sensing and computing resources of MUs, it is crucial to inspire MUs to take part in crowdsensing willingly. In this study, a multiagent-deep-reinforcement-learning (DRL)-based incentive mechanism is investigated to tackle the joint data sensing and computing issues. Specifically, due to the heterogeneity of sensing tasks, multiple MCS platforms (MCPs) motivate MUs to participate in different tasks. The interaction between MCPs and MUs is modeled as a multileader-multifollower Stackelberg game with Stackelberg equilibrium proved by derivation. Moreover, the Stackelberg game is transformed as a Markov decision process (MDP) to deal with a multiagent DRL method without any prior knowledge. Due to the continuous high-dimensional action space of multiple MCPs and MUs, a multiagent double actors deep deterministic policy gradient (MA-DADDPG) algorithm is proposed to obtain the optimal sensing data size, computing resource, and incentive payment policies. Extensive simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed crowdsensing incentive mechanism. © 2014 IEEE.

Diffusion-based framework for weakly-supervised temporal action localization

Weakly supervised temporal action localization aims to localize action instances with only video-level supervision. Due to the absence of frame-level annotation supervision, how effectively separate action snippets and backgrounds from semantically ambiguous features becomes an arduous challenge for this task. To address this issue from a generative modeling perspective, we propose a novel diffusion-based network with two stages. Firstly, we design a local masking mechanism module to learn the local semantic information and generate binary masks at the early stage, which (1) are used to perform action-background separation and (2) serve as pseudo-ground truth required by the diffusion module. Then, we propose a diffusion module to generate high-quality action predictions under the pseudo-ground truth supervision in the second stage. In addition, we further optimize the new-refining operation in the local masking module to improve the operation efficiency. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a promising performance on the publicly available mainstream datasets THUMOS14 and ActivityNet. In response to the escalating demand for electricity, the aging process and inherent failures in power lines have become unavoidable challenges in their operational integrity. This research addresses the imperative need for a robust method to detect damage in power insulator disc images, introducing a novel feature extraction technique grounded in color intensity profile transformation and ensemble learning. For the purposes of the research, a specific dataset was developed based on publicly available images of power insulators. The collection consists of 9232 images of insulator discs which included 2184 images of damaged discs. The discernible damages include breakages and burnouts. Two distinct analysis variants were employed. In the first variant (V1), two classification groups were selected: disc with damages and disc without damages. In the second variant (V2), three classification groups were selected: discs without damage, broken discs, and burnout discs. The described research was divided into two successive stages. In the first of them (S1), the transformed color intensity profiles for the prepared data set were built and various machine learning models for their classification were trained and evaluated. In the next stage (S2), previously developed, highest efficient machine learning models, were used to make the detection of various damaged types of overhead line insulator discs. For the first stage of research high-performance results and a high value of the F1 score parameters were obtained (F1 score = 0.999 for the first variant (S1V1) and F1 score = 0.992 for the second variant (S1V2). In the second stage of research and the first variant (S2V1), the highest result of the F1 score was 0.932 and for the second variant (S2V2) F1 score was 0.930. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Learning for predictive control: A Dual Gaussian Process approach

An important issue in model-based control design is that an accurate dynamic model of the system is generally nonlinear, complex, and costly to obtain. This limits achievable control performance in practice. Gaussian Process (GP) based estimation of system models is an effective tool to learn unknown dynamics directly from input/output data. However, conventional GP-based control methods often ignore the computational cost associated with accumulating data during the operation of the system and how to handle forgetting in continuous adaption. In this paper, we present a novel Dual Gaussian Process (DGP) based Model Predictive control (MPC) strategy that enables efficient use of online learning based predictive control without the danger of catastrophic forgetting. The bio-inspired DGP structure is a combination of a long-term GP and a short-term GP, where the long-term GP is used to keep the learnt knowledge in memory and the short-term GP is employed to rapidly compensate unknown dynamics during online operation. A novel recursive online update strategy for the short-term GP is proposed to successively improve the learnt model during online operation without a "dictionary" update and re-computation of the Gram matrix at each time step. Effectiveness of the proposed strategy is demonstrated via numerical simulations. © 2025
