Brain networks typically exhibit characteristic synchronization patterns where several synchronized clusters coexist. On the other hand, neurological disorders are considered to be related to pathological synchronization such as excessive synchronization of large populations of neurons. Motivated by these phenomena, this paper presents two approaches to control the cluster synchronization of Kuramoto oscillators. One is based on the use of pacemakers to the clusters, and the other is based on feeding back the mean phases to the clusters. We first show conditions on the pacemaker weights and the feedback gains for the network to achieve cluster synchronization. Then, we propose a method to find optimal feedback gains through convex optimization. A numerical example demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed methods. © 2024 IEEE.

Safe platooning control of connected and autonomous vehicles on curved multi-lane roads

This paper investigates the safe platoon formation tracking and merging control problem of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) on curved multi-lane roads. The first novelty is the separation of the control designs into two distinct parts: a lateral control law that ensures a geometrical convergence towards the reference path regardless of the translational velocity, and a longitudinal control design for each vehicle to achieve the desired relative arc length and velocity with respect to its neighboring vehicle. The second novelty is exploiting the constructive barrier feedback as an additive term to the nominal tracking control, ensuring both lateral and longitudinal collision avoidance. This constructive barrier feedback acts as a dissipative term, slowing down the relative velocity toward obstacles without affecting the nominal controller’s performance. Consequently, our proposed control method enables safe platoon formation of vehicles on curved multi-lane roads, with theoretical guarantees for safety invariance and stability analysis. Simulation and experimental results on connected vehicles are provided to further validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper addresses the task of learning periodic information using deep neural networks to achieve real-time, environment-independent sound source localization. Previous papers showed phase data is the most significant cue in sound source localization tasks and the proposed vM-B DNN was validated to be able to handle such periodic information using on synthesized data. However, they haven't shown its effectiveness and robustness in realistic use cases. This paper introduces a more complex model based on residual networks and adapts vM-B activation function for convolutional layers for use cases that require real-time predictions in dynamically changing environments. © 2024 IEEE.

In the application of computer vision recognition, the recognition objects of some tissue-like structures present highly complex and variable characteristics. For this practical usage scenario, traditional classification algorithms usually cannot achieve the desired recognition effect. To achieve better recognition performance in this direction, this study integrates ASFF into the YOLOv5 model and introduces the SimAm attention mechanism module. The improved network structure is more lightweight, has fewer network parameters, and the attention mechanism is more effective. We trained the modified YOLO model on datasets, and experimental results show a significant increase in mAP value and a 20% increase in accuracy. Autonomous driving is a highly relevant topic today, particularly among major car manufacturers attempting to lead in technological innovation and enhance driving safety. An autonomous vehicle must possess the capability to sense its environment and navigate without human intervention. Thus, it serves as both a driver support system and, in some cases, a substitute. A crucial aspect involves identifying the positions of pedestrians, traffic signs, traffic lights, and other vehicles while computing distances from them. This enables the vehicle to emit alerts to the driver in potentially dangerous situations, such as impending obstacles due to external factors or driver distraction. In this paper, we introduce an approach for identifying traffic signs and determining the distance from them. Our method utilizes the YOLOv4 network for identification and a customized network for distance computation. This integration of AI technologies facilitates the timely detection of hazards and enables proactive alert mechanisms, thereby advancing the capabilities of autonomous vehicles and enhancing driving safety. © 2023 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

The rapid advancements in single-photon detectors with picosecond timing resolution over the past decade have significantly driven the development of time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) for computational imaging applications, including bioimaging and remote sensing. In this review, we utilize the CiteSpace tool to create knowledge maps and perform a bibliometric analysis of this research area. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive overview of the key challenges associated with computational imaging using temporal single-photon counting. We also highlight how these challenges have been addressed under extreme conditions to establish a reference model for future imaging solutions. We examine the performance evaluation parameters of single-photon detectors to enhance the understanding of detector array scaling and their application in constructing efficient computational imaging systems. Lastly, we aim to elucidate the current technical challenges in single-photon detector-based computational imaging and explore their potential future developments. © The Author(s) 2025.

This study investigates the relationship between the diameter of a D-shaped plastic optical fiber (POF) sensor and its optical response as a function of varying salt concentrations. A simple and efficient dry etching polishing technique was employed to create D-shaped POF sensors with a range of diameters. All the fabricated sensors were carefully developed to maintain a consistent length of 20 cm with a sensing region of 1cm. To evaluate the optical intensity response, each sensor, with its respective diameter, was examined with the salt concentration ranging from (0 to 5%) examination utilizing a spectrometer. The sensor response was characterized by quantifying the variations observed in the intensity of the optical signal propagating through the sensing region. The sensors having a diameter of 500 μm, 700 μm, and 900 μm had a sensitivity of 149 A.U/%salt, 66 A.U/%salt, and 11.2 A.U/%salt respectively. The sensitivity of the 500 μm diameter sensor increased 13 times approximately as compared to the sensor having diameter of 900 μm. © 2025 institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

The increase of terminal devices in the automated power distribution system expands the attack surface for malicious adversaries, which can severely impair the reliability and stability of the power grids. As cyber-attacks are empowered by diverse and elaborate techniques, relying solely on traditional passive defense methods is insufficient to address the evolving security threats. It is imperative to develop adaptive and active approaches to defend against the cyber-attacks aimed at terminal devices in the power distribution system. Motivated by this idea, we focus on the network defense decision-making approach. Effective defense strategies not only mitigate the risk of disruptive cyber-attacks, such as data breaches and system compromises, but also ensure the continuous operation of essential services in the power system. Though researchers have made efforts to explore game-theoretic defense-decision methods for power systems, there are still shortcoming in defining rewards and state transitions. In this paper, we utilize the stochastic game to model the confrontation between the attacker and defender. We design a hybrid reward function to describe the rewards in the two-player game from various perspectives. We also introduce a deep Q-network to learn the high-dimensional state transitions and achieve the Nash equilibrium. Experimental results based on the simulated network are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. © 2024 ACM.

Modern urban development depends on optimizing cognitive sensor communications in smart cities, which is the focus of this investigation. In the era of expanding sensor networks, efficient data transmission is paramount for the success of smart city initiatives. The current state of sensor communication faces challenges like suboptimal adaptability, inefficient energy usage, and limited fault detection. This study proposes a solution through the application of an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), identifying these challenges as opportunities for improvement. The novelty lies in ANFIS's introduction as an intelligent and adaptive solution. Its ability to learn from sensor data, adapt to changing conditions, and optimize communication parameters sets it apart in enhancing cognitive sensor communication. The research methodology involves a systematic approach, encompassing data collection, pre-processing, and ANFIS model development. The model is rigorously trained, validated, and tested for real-world effectiveness. Integration into the smart city communication system is explored, emphasizing applications in context-aware communication, energy-efficient protocols, and fault detection. Performance is evaluated using metrics like accuracy, reliability, and efficiency, demonstrating the model's efficacy in addressing drawbacks and enhancing overall sensor communication in smart cities. The findings contribute to advancing intelligent systems for urban infrastructure and services. © 2024 IEEE.

In realistic distributed optimization scenarios, individual nodes possess only partial information and communicate over bandwidth constrained channels. For this reason, the development of efficient distributed algorithms is essential. In our paper we addresses the challenge of unconstrained distributed optimization. In our scenario each node's local function exhibits strong convexity with Lipschitz continuous gradients. The exchange of information between nodes occurs through 3-bit bandwidth-limited channels (i.e., nodes exchange messages represented by a only 3 -bits). Our proposed algorithm respects the network's bandwidth constraints by leveraging zoom-in and zoom-out operations to adjust quantizer parameters dynamically. We show that during our algorithm's operation nodes are able to converge to the exact optimal solution. Furthermore, we show that our algorithm achieves a linear convergence rate to the optimal solution. We conclude the paper with simulations that highlight our algorithm's unique characteristics. © 2024 IEEE.
