It has been recognized recently that semidefinite optimization problems (SDP) can be cast into second order cone programs (SOCP) by replacing the positive definiteness constraints with stronger, scaled diagonal dominance (SDD) conditions. Since the scalability of SOCP solvers is much better than that of the SDPs, the new formulation allows solving large dimensional problems more efficiently. However, scaled diagonal dominant matrices form only a subset of the positive definite matrices. Hence, the new problem formulation results in more conservative solutions. This paper analyses the efficiency and conservativeness of the SDD formulation on two particular problems: the stability analysis and induced L_2 gain computation for linear parameter-varying systems. In the paper some important features of the SDD formulation are revealed and numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the efficiency of the approach.

Identifying exons in eukaryotes is an important topic in computational biology. In this paper, according to the threebase periodicity of eukaryotic exons, a model-independent method based on the empirical mode decomposition and the modified Gabor-wavelet transform has been developed for identifying exons in DNA sequences of eukaryotes. This novel technique is aimed particularly at detecting the significant components of short exons that are rarely observed with the traditional methods,and presents the advantage of noise suppression in the identification of exons. By using this method, the numerical DNA sequence represented by DNA-bending stiffness scheme is firstly decomposed by empirical mode decomposition into a collection of intrinsic mode functions. Then the first intrinsic mode function is used to compute the local spectrum by modified Gaborwavelet transform. The performance of the proposed method is compared with two existing model-independent methods by using eukaryote data sets. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the two assessed methods with respect to identification accuracy.

This paper presents a vision-based fingertip writing digits detection and recognition system using a CMOS camera and FPGA implementation. It is a real-time signature detector, since the image process algorithms are all executed in Verilog code. As an improtant cryptographic scheme, signcryption scheme has been widely used in applications since it could provide both of signature and encryption. With the development of the certificateless public key cryptography (CLPKC), many certificatelss signcryption (CLSC) schemes using bilinear pairing hve been proposed. Comparated other operations, the bilinear pairing operaion is much more compulicated. Therefore, CLSC scheme without bilinear pairing is more suitable for applications. Recently, Jing et al. proposed a CLSC scheme without bilinear pairing and claimed their scheme is secure against two types of adversaries. In this paper, we will show their scheme provide neither unforgeability property nor confidentiality property. To improve security, we also propose a new CLSC scheme without pairing and demonstrate it is provably secure in the random oracle model.

This paper presents an analysis of how the iris recognition is impacted by eye diseases and an appropriate dataset comprising 2996 iris images of 230 distinct eyes (including 184 illness-affected eyes representing more than 20 different eye conditions). The images were collected in near infrared and visible light during a routine ophthalmological practice. The experimental study shows four valuable results. First, the enrollment process is highly sensitive to those eye conditions that make the iris obstructed or introduce geometrical distortions. Second, even those conditions that do not produce visible changes to the iris structure may increase the dissimilarity among samples of the same eyes. Third, eye conditions affecting iris geometry, its tissue structure or producing obstructions significantly decrease the iris recognition reliability. Fourth, for eyes afflicted by a disease, the most prominent effect of the disease on iris recognition is to cause segmentation errors. To our knowledge this is the first database of iris images for disease-affected eyes made publicly available to researchers, and the most comprehensive study of what we can expect when the iris recognition is deployed for non-healthy eyes.

The paper uses the state-space model setting to consider the stabilization of stochastic nonlinear 2D Fornasini-Marchesini systems, where the properties of stability in the second moment and exponential stability in the mean square (ESMS) are defined and sufficient conditions for their existence established. In the case of ESMS a converse theorem is also established. The property of stochastic dissipativity in the second moment is introduced and a particular case of this property, termed passivity in the mean square, is used, together with a vector storage function, to develop a new method for control law design. Two practically motivated examples are given to demonstrate the application of the new results.

In this paper, a structure-preserving model reduction approach for a class of nonlinear delay differential equations with time-varying delays is proposed. Benefits of this approach are, firstly, the fact that the delay nature of the system is preserved after reduction, secondly, that input-output stability properties are preserved and, thirdly, that a computable error bound reflecting the accuracy of the reduction is provided. These results are also applicable to large-scale linear delay differential equations with constant delays. The effectiveness of the results is evidenced by means of an illustrative example involving the nonlinear delayed dynamics of the turning process.
