The problem of matrix completion has been gaining increasing attention among the data mining, knowledge discovery and related research communities. Factorization is one approach to solve the problem. There are good factorization methods, such as Singular value decomposition (SVD) and Non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) which could get a rather satisfied results when dealing with real-valued data. However when comes to binary data, we need a different handling strategy. In this paper, we use the Boolean Matrix Factorization (BMF) method based on weighted Frobenius norm to predict the missing values in a binary matrix. Because BMF is an NP-hard problem, we propose a recursive method that updates the rank-one matrix in latent space in each step to maximum the coverage of the known values of the input matrix. To speed up computations, we use a Heaviside step function, which allows us to decompose the recursive computing process into normal non-negative matrices and get the results by mapping them back into a Boolean matrix. The Simulation results from an actual test show that the proposed method outperforms the existing method.

Quality of Experience (QoE) support becomes more demanding due to the increasing popularity of multimedia services. However, QoE-based multimedia provisioning will impose a high pressure on server capacity and network bandwidth, which becomes one of the major concerns for both content providers and network operators. A common approach for efficient and scalable multimedia service provisioning in content distribution networks (CDN) is to replicate certain “hot” service or content from the original server to multiple replica servers, usually closer to end users. However, how to direct distributed user requests to an appropriate replica server to fundamentally improve the user perceived service quality largely remains unknown. In this paper, we present a user-oriented QoE-driven server selection scheme to solve the aforementioned problem. Experiments carried out on a real-world network have been performed to evaluate the proposed scheme, and the results show that the proposed scheme can improve QoE perceived by end users at least 24.6%.

We propose and test on real data a two-tier estimation strategy for inferring occupancy levels from measurements of CO_2 concentration and temperature levels. The first tier is a blind identification step, based either on a frequentist Maximum Likelihood method, implemented using non-linear optimization, or on a Bayesian marginal likelihood method, implemented using a dedicated Expectation-Maximization algorithm. The second tier resolves the ambiguity of the unknown multiplicative factor, and returns the final estimate of the occupancy levels. The overall procedure addresses some practical issues of existing occupancy estimation strategies. More specifically, first it does not require the installation of special hardware, since it uses measurements that are typically available in many buildings. Second, it does not require apriori knowledge on the physical parameters of the building, since it performs system identification steps. Third, it does not require pilot data containing measured real occupancy patterns (i.e., physically counting people for some periods, a typically expensive and time consuming step), since the identification steps are blind.

The variability of electromagnetic parameters of induction motors with deep-bar cage or solid rotors is represented, with a satisfactory approximation, by the machine secondary multi-loop equivalent circuit with constant lumped parameters. An estimation procedure of electromagnetic parameters of such an equivalent circuit is presented in the paper. The procedure is carried out using the measured frequency characteristic determined on the basis of instantaneous values of investigated induction motor electromechanical quantities. The study has been subjected to an induction motor with a solid rotor manufactured from the magnetic material, i.e. a machine characterized by a significant skin effect occurring in rotor solid conductive elements.

In electric and hybrid-electric vehicles, the inverter output voltage is limited by available DC-link voltage, which restricts the vehicle speed and acceleration. Therefore the fundamental component of the motor voltage should be increased by operating inverter in the six-step mode at high speeds. Although hysteresis based direct torque control (DTC) is a straightforward approach and has several advantages, this method cannot work in the six-step mode. In this paper a new hysteresis based DTC with over modulation ability for interior permanent magnet synchronous machines (IPMSM) is suggested. In this method, unlike the previously proposed methods, the calculation of the voltage vector or flux reference in different phase angles is not necessary. In the proposed method, the flux trajectory is changed by adjusting the non-switching area and modifying switching table, and thus a seamless transformation between high-frequency switching and six-step square wave is possible. Also in this paper, the dynamic model for an electric vehicle is developed which its traction motor is controlled by proposed DTC. The simulation results prove that the proposed method modify the vehicle performances, notably. These results show that the vehicle with proposed method has a higher top speed and better acceleration. Also it is shown, that the proposed method can improve the vehicle efficiency for various driving cycles. In addition the results confirm the torque discontinuity does not appear in the whole range of vehicle speed.
