Recently, a new finite-sample system identification algorithm, called Sign-Perturbed Sums (SPS), was introduced in [2]. SPS constructs finite-sample confidence regions that are centered around the least squares estimate, and are guaranteed to contain the true system parameters with a user-chosen exact probability for any finite number of data points. The main assumption of SPS is that the noise terms are independent and symmetrically distributed about zero, but they do not have to be stationary, nor do their variances and distributions have to be known. Although it is easy to determine if a particular parameter belongs to the confidence region, it is not easy to describe the boundary of the region, and hence to compactly represent the exact confidence region. In this paper we show that an ellipsoidal outer-approximation of the SPS confidence region can be found by solving a convex optimization problem, and we illustrate the properties of the SPS region and the ellipsoidal outer-approximation in simulation examples.

We study in this paper the consensus problem for multi-agent systems with agents characterized by high-order linear systems with time delays in both the communication network and inputs. Provided that the open-loop dynamics of the agents is not exponentially unstable, but may be polynomially unstable, and the communication topology contains a directed spanning tree, a truncated predictor feedback approach is established to solve the consensus problem. It is shown that, if the delays are constant and exactly known, the consensus problem can be solved by state feedback protocols for arbitrarily large bounded delays. If it is further assumed that the open-loop dynamics of the agents only contains zero eigenvalues, the delays are allowed to be time-varying and unknown. Numerical examples are worked out to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

This contribution deals with the generation of oscillations in dynamical systems of higher order. It briefly reviews electrical oscillators from a system theoretic viewpoint and then generalizes the ideas to control systems of (in theory) arbitrary finite dimension, which fulfill certain controllability requirements. Applications for the proposed method can be found in the control of underactuated mechanical systems because these are often heavily influenced by discontinuous effects of the actuators. This paper presents the design of a controller which electrifies vehicles by a direct methanol fuel cell. The project has been prepared based on a 1:4 scaled model of a car. As part of this project, an electronic motherboard including control algorithms for wireless system monitoring and car control has been developed. For wireless communication between the vehicle and the PC, a connection has been established based on ZigBee PRO standard. This connection is encrypted using an AES-128 algorithm. Finally, in order to verify the performance of the proposed controller, it has been installed on an actual car.

In this study, DNA strand displacement is utilized to control the aggregation of DNA/gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) based on circular DNA, in which DNA/AuNP conjugates are captured and released by adding different DNA signal strands. Using this strategy, single DNA/nanoparticle building blocks are capable of assembling into complex structures of two and three circular DNA/nanoparticles. The existence of these structures is demonstrated by gel electrophoresis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. This advance has potential applications in controlling, transporting and detecting DNA/AuNP conjugates with subsequent manipulation of the structure and function of these assemblies.
