A study on integral equalities related to a Laplace transformable function and its applications

This paper establishes some integral equalities formulated by zeros located in the convergence region of a Laplace transformable function. Using the definition of the Laplace transform, it shows that Laplace transformable functions have to satisfy the integral equalities in the time-domain, which can be applied to the understanding of the fundamental limitations on the control system represented by the transfer function. In the unity-feedback control scheme, another integral equality is derived on the output response of the system with open-loop poles located in the convergence region of the output function. From these integral equalities, two sufficient conditions related to undershoot and overshoot phenomena in the step response, respectively, are investigated.

Traditional approaches to controller designs that guarantee fast compensation of load torque and reference variations result in design iterations and most of the time in poorer response for load torque variations. In this paper a reference model for desired drive behavior generation and optimization methods has been applied to achieve controller integral time constant lower than the maximum time constant of the PM brushless DC motor drive. Presented simulation results show that using reference model for desired drive behavior generation, it is possible to determine optimal controller parameters for faster (10 time) and better (2 time) load torque compensation than in the case of traditional design of speed controller parameters. Response due to reference input with constrained overshoot has been achieved using a filter in the servosystem input. Thereby, the proposed method demonstrates the design of a speed controller that is optimal for both load torque and reference variations and its verification with simulation are accomplished for a permanent magnet brushless dc motor drive.

In this paper, a new approach is presented for robust filtering of a linear discrete-time signal by applying fictitious noise. Modeling errors, in both the numerator and denominator of the transfer functions, are parameterized by using random variables with zero mean and known covariance. The robust performance is obtained by minimizing the mean square estimation error over all of the random parameter and noise. To derive a robust estimator, the uncertainties in the model are incorporated into two mutually uncorrelated fictitious noises with zero means. The covariances of the fictitious noises are computed by using two formulas that are presented in this paper. An illustrative example shows the effectiveness of our approach.

This paper focuses on a system to fulfill writer identification, which identifies a person with his/her handwriting. A text independent method is proposed in this paper, which involves no local feature analysis. First, a preprocessing method is employed to normalize script images. Then, 2D Gabor wavelet technique is developed to extract the global features. Finally a K-nearest neighbor (K-NN) classifier is designed to identify the person with the identified handwriting. Illustrative experiments are made with 110 specimens of 50 people, and a result of 97.6% accuracy is achieved with the writer identification approach proposed in this paper.

The design of current and speed controllers remains to a large extent a mystery to many engineers in the motor drives field. An attempt is made in this paper to simplify the design of the current and speed controllers using Bode plots. This paper outlines the theoretical background behind the techniques of symmetric optimum and dominant time constant compensation methods. The techniques are compared and contrasted using the overshoot and phase margin criteria. An application of these techniques to controller design for permanent magnet brushless DC motor (PMBDCM) drive system is made and verified with simulation. In order to apply these techniques to PMBDCM drive for the design of the current and speed controllers, the model of the motor drive is given for the benefit of the reader. The current and speed controller synthesis of a PMBDCM drive is achieved with the presented technique. Simulation results demonstrate for reference (current or speed) changes, symmetric optimum and dominant time compensation methods perform similarly. But for a load torque disturbance, the adverse effect on the speed is compensated faster only with the symmetric optimum method.

A concept of dynamic safety (CoDySa) has been developed primarily targeting the improvement of aircraft safety. CoDySa principles are based on an analysis of the operating cycle of aircraft. Implementation of CoDySa in practice presumes completing steps to modernize the existing system. The further development of the CoDySa principles are its ground-to-air communication architecture. Possibilities to upload safety-enhancing software components (safelets) have been proposed together with scenarios of their use. These safelets can help a pilot in certain situations. This paper is devoted to software development technologies which can be chosen to implement uploadable safelets. Two main candidates are compared, namely Java and Juice/Oberon. Issues such as code effectiveness and safety are emphasized. Juice/Oberon has been recognized as a better candidate for implementation of safelets.

This paper introduces a new multi-mode scannable memory element which allows pseudorandom testing to be integrated with scan in sequential circuits without the need of any design changes. As in the case of scan, the new element is used in place of regular flip-flops in the design library. Concurrent with normal operation, the design can accumulate a signature of the state variables in the scan-register configured as a multiple input signature analyzer (MISA). Thus virtually complete state observability is achieved without the need of scanning-out the state for each test-input. The pseudorandom states of the MISA can also be utilized as state inputs in pseudorandom testing. In this way, most faults are covered in a pseudorandom, `test per clock' mode. Only a few random pattern resistant faults require scan, greatly reducing test application time. Pseudorandom delay testing of the true normally active circuit paths is also possible. Two-pattern tests are supported. Finally, we show that the new memory element can also be used for fault-tolerant design.

A dynamical mathematical model of a water supply plant based on lumped parameters is described. A concept of its control system is proposed that ensures output pressure stabilisation under conditions of variable water consumption and variable water recourses. The control system consists of inner control loops which control the flow of each pump station and of a superimposed control loop that controls the output pressure of the water supply plant. The pressure controller calculates the cumulative reference value of the water flow for all controlled pumps and from this value an algorithm for the flow distribution calculates the reference flow for each inner loop, taking into account the level of water accumulation in each water well. control performances of output pressure obtained by a conventional PI controller and a fuzzy logic based controller are compared.
