Stress Severity Detection in College Students Using Emotional Pulse Signals and Deep Learning

College students face increasing stress from difficulties with studies, employment, and social interactions, which, if left unaddressed, may lead to depression and physical illnesses. Currently, the detection of stress severity relies on self-assessment scales, while machine learning or deep learning-based approaches primarily focus on classification. This study proposes an approach using pulse signals containing emotional cues and deep learning to automatically detect the severity of stress in college students. Firstly, pulse signals of 177 college students were collected using photoplethysmography (PPG) during they watched five virtual reality (VR) emotional scenes, including calm, sadness, happiness, fear, and tension. Pulse rate variability (PRV) and discrete PPG (dPPG) were extracted from these signals as input for detecting stress severity. Then, the proposed stress detection framework, 1DCNN-BiLSTM + Cross-Attention + XGBoost, was employed to detect stress severity, incorporating an emotional Cross-Attention mechanism. The impact of induced emotions on stress severity detection performance was examined. The results indicated that stress severity detection in emotional scenes outperformed in calm. Furthermore, the detection performance that integrates multiple emotions surpassed single emotions. The fusion of PRV and dPPG signals yielded the best detection performance. This study provides an end-to-end automated approach for detecting stress severity in college students. © 2010-2012 IEEE.

Cross-view geo-localization provides an offline visual positioning strategy for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-denied environments. However, it still faces the following challenges, leading to suboptimal localization performance: 1) Existing methods primarily focus on extracting global features or local features by partitioning feature maps, neglecting the exploration of spatial information, which is essential for extracting consistent feature representations and aligning images of identical targets across different views. 2) Cross-view geo-localization encounters the challenge of data imbalance between UAV and satellite images. To address these challenges, the Spatial Hybrid Attention Network with Adaptive Cross-Entropy Loss Function (SHAA) is proposed. To tackle the first issue, the Spatial Hybrid Attention (SHA) method employs a Spatial Shift-MLP (SSM) to focus on the spatial geometric correspondences in feature maps across different views, extracting both global features and fine-grained features. Additionally, the SHA method utilizes a Hybrid Attention (HA) mechanism to enhance feature extraction diversity and robustness by capturing interactions between spatial and channel dimensions, thereby extracting consistent cross-view features and aligning images. For the second challenge, the Adaptive Cross-Entropy (ACE) loss function incorporates adaptive weights to emphasize hard samples, alleviating data imbalance issues and improving training effectiveness. Extensive experiments on widely recognized benchmarks, including University-1652, SUES-200, and DenseUAV, demonstrate that SHAA achieves state-of-the-art performance, outperforming existing methods by over 3.92%. Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Enhanced Wireless Localization: Phase Optimization for Malicious Interference Mitigation

Recently, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have merged as important enabling technologies for localization coverage extension and localization accuracy improvement under signal blockage and malicious interference conditions. However, most existing works assume known locations of jammers, which is generally impractical in real-world networks. To overcome this challenge, we propose a novel RIS-enhanced wireless localization framework against malicious interference with the support of either narrowband or orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) pilot signals. A two-stage anti-jamming localization approach is developed to first estimate the unknown channel and signal information of the jammer and then localize the user’s position by eliminating the jamming signal. More importantly, we utilize the full potential of RIS to improve localization accuracy by optimizing the phase shift profile during the iterative process. Extensive simulation results demonstrate the commendable performance of our proposed framework, which can not only mitigate the jamming effect but also achieve better localization accuracy, offering a good reference for future heterogeneous and complex wireless networks. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Dear Editor, This letter presents a finite-time online parameter self-learning disturbance rejection surge speed control method for a marine surface vehicle (MSV). Specifically, a finite-time parameter self-learning robust exact differentiator based (RED-based) observer is first employed for estimating the unknown hydrodynamic parameters and the unknown control input coefficient separately, ensuring the finitetime convergence for both. The environmental disturbances and the dynamic modeling errors are also estimated simultaneously. Subsequently, a self-learning disturbance rejection control law is designed based on the estimated information. Finally, Lyapunov method is applied to prove the stability of the system. Hardware-in-the-loop experiment verifies the effectiveness of the proposed control method. © 2014 Chinese Association of Automation.

Cloud computing has revolutionized the provisioning of computing resources, offering scalable, flexible, and on-demand services to meet the diverse requirements of modern applications. At the heart of efficient cloud operations are job scheduling and resource management, which are critical for optimizing system performance and ensuring timely and cost-effective service delivery. However, the dynamic and heterogeneous nature of cloud environments presents significant challenges for these tasks, as workloads and resource availability can fluctuate unpredictably. Traditional approaches, including heuristic and meta-heuristic algorithms, often struggle to adapt to these real-time changes due to their reliance on static models or predefined rules. Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) has emerged as a promising solution to these challenges by enabling systems to learn and adapt policies based on continuous observations of the environment, facilitating intelligent and responsive decision-making. This survey provides a comprehensive review of DRL-based algorithms for job scheduling and resource management in cloud computing, analyzing their methodologies, performance metrics, and practical applications. We also highlight emerging trends and future research directions, offering valuable insights into leveraging DRL to advance both job scheduling and resource management in cloud computing. © 2025, CC BY.

Constraining multimodal distribution for domain adaptation in stereo matching

Recently, learning-based stereo matching methods have achieved great improvement in public benchmarks, where soft argmin and smooth L1 loss play core contributions to its success. However, in unsupervised domain adaptation scenarios, we observe that these two operations often yield multimodal disparity probability distributions in target domains, resulting in degraded generalization. In this paper, we propose a novel approach, Constrain Multi-modal Distribution (CMD), to address this issue. Specifically, we introduce uncertainty-regularized minimization and anisotropic soft argmin to encourage the network to produce predominantly unimodal disparity distributions in the target domain, thereby improving prediction accuracy. Experimentally, we apply the proposed method to multiple representative stereo-matching networks and conduct domain adaptation from synthetic data to unlabeled real-world scenes. Results consistently demonstrate improved generalization in both top-performing and domain-adaptable stereo-matching models. The code for CMD will be available at: https://***/gallenszl/CMD. © 2025

In this letter, the dipole antenna arrays with self-decoupling characteristics are developed. In comparison with the traditional electric dipole antennas, the developed dipole antenna can be considered as comprising an electric dipole and two magnetic dipoles while maintaining a relatively simple structural design. The multi-coupling cancellation between adjacent antenna elements was achieved to achieve high port isolation levels. To validate the effectiveness of the developed self-decoupling method, a 1×2 antenna array is simulated, fabricated, and measured. The results demonstrated port isolation level exceeds 25 dB over the entire operational bandwidth of 3.3-3.8 GHz, and a maximum isolation level of ⁓63 dB was achieved. Furthermore, a 1×6 antenna array is simulated to validate the extensibility of the developed self-decoupling method, where the isolation levels between all ports exceeds 25 dB across the entire operational bandwidth of 3.3-3.8 GHz. © 2002-2011 IEEE.

Full life-cycle cost model for practical application of solar energy system

In pursuit of carbon neutrality, a swift transformation is underway in the global energy structure, marked by a consistent rise in the installed capacity of solar energy systems. Meanwhile, the substantial reduction of government subsidies in the solar industry intensifies focus on the economic viability of solar energy installations. In this study, we propose a full life-cycle cost model, named the F-LCC model, for calculating the cost of the solar energy system on the long term, e.g., 20–30 years. This model integrates replacement costs, residual value calculation, interest rate, and inflation impacts while supporting market price estimation for individual components, thereby aiding feasibility analysis in the early project phase. We design an investment cost recovery algorithm based on the F-LCC model to calculate the break-even electricity price for solar energy system. Moreover, we analyze component cost distributions, Net Present Value (NPV), and Discounted Payback Period (DPP) for grid-connected and off-grid solar energy systems with capacities of 10 kWp and 100 kWp in the Chinese market. The results show that the proposed model, compared to other models, captures the fact that payback times are longer. In a solar energy system without storage, solar panels have the highest component cost share at 28.8%. With battery storage, batteries dominate the total cost, reaching up to 74.6%. And the the grid-connected systems DPP ranging from a minimum of 5.5 to a maximum of 7.0 years by grid-connected electricity price, while off-grid systems require at least 19.9 years. The 10 kWp off-grid fixed mounting system’s break-even price being 137.1% higher than its grid-connected counterpart. In addition, tracking-mount systems offer greater cost-reduction potential than fixed installations, with the payback period reduced by 20% for 100 kWp grid-connected systems and 15% for off-grid systems. Resilient Decentralized Frequency Regulation for Multi-Area Power Systems With Electric Vehicles Under Hybrid Cyber-Attacks

This paper proposes a resilient output-feedback frequency regulation mechanism for multi-area power systems, ensuring secure and stable operation. Firstly, the uncertainties introduced by state-of-charge (SOC) variations are considered for the addressed system involved electric vehicle (EV). Subsequently, the behavior of hybrid replay-DoS attacks is taken into account, where a non-homogeneous Markov jump framework is employed to capture both stochastic transitions and temporal dependencies of attack behaviors, and a decentrilized resilient controller is designed to mitigate these adverse effects. To facilitate controller synthesis, a refined model of the lossless power network is further developed by equivalently transforming tie-line power deviations in specific areas, ensuring compliance with tie-line power constraints while preserving system controllability. Based on this model, a comprehensive analysis of system dynamics is performed, and a set of delay-dependent, computationally tractable criteria is derived for controller gain selection. Finally, extensive simulations on three-area power systems validate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy in maintaining frequency stability, mitigating SOC uncertainties, and counteracting hybrid replay-DoS attacks. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Semidefinite programming for manipulating acoustic traps in real time (SMART)

Sound waves can be used for trapping and manipulating objects immersed in liquids or air. However, most acoustic levitation techniques are limited to particles with diameters much smaller than the acoustic wavelength or require time-consuming optimisation-based methods that hinder the dynamic manipulation of objects. Here, we present an approach based on semidefinite programming to manipulate levitated objects in real time. To demonstrate this technique, a phased array consisting of 256 ultrasonic transducers operating at 40 kHz is used for rotating a non-spherical Rayleigh object or to translate Mie spheres along various trajectories. In contrast to previous optimisation-based approaches, the proposed method can determine the emission phases of each transducer in real time, strongly facilitating the implementation of a model-based closed-loop control in future acoustic levitation systems. This is a fundamental step for manipulating levitated objects precisely and at high speeds. © The Author(s) 2025.
