This paper presents the comparison of two approaches based on artificial intelligence techniques solving the task of on-line recognition of metabolic state of baker's yeast culture in a fed-batch cultivation. The first approach iS represented by a knowledge-based system containing expert knowledge in the form of production rules. The other approach is based on the application of the fuzzy neural network paradigm enabling the automatic extraction of the recognition rules from. experimental data. Performance of both approaches is discussed using results obtamed from tests on experimental data from a laboratory cultivation unit.

Cross-media retrieval, which uses a text query to search for images and vice-versa, has attracted a wide attention in recent years. The mostly existing cross-media retrieval methods aim at finding a common subspace and maximizing different modalities correlations. But these approaches do not directly capture the underlying semantic information of different modalities. This paper proposes a novel cross-media retrieval by semantics clustering and enhancement, where a semantic-preserved mapping is learned from the original space to the target semantic space. Meanwhile, In order to improve the demarcation of semantic space, we enhance the semantic manifold by learning a dimension invariant matrix. Our approach not only maximizes the correlation between different modalities, but also increases the discriminative ability among different categories. Experiments show that our approach outperforms the popular methods on two real word datasets.

In the calibration laboratories are used standard procedures for calculating of the calibration model coefficients based on well described standards (EN 60751, ITS-90, EN 60584, etc.). In practice, sensors are mostly calibrated in more points and redundant information is used as a validation of the model. This paper will present the influence of including all measured points with respect to their uncertainties to the measured models using standard weighted least square methods. A special case with regards of the different level of the uncertainty of the measured points in case of the robust approach will be discussed. This will go to the different minimization criteria and different uncertainty propagation methodology. This approach also will eliminate of the influence of the outline measurements in the calibration. In practical part will be three cases of this approach presented, namely industrial calibration according to the standard EN 60751, SPRT according to the ITS-90 and thermocouple according to the standard EN 60584.

The paper presents in its initial part historical notes to the development of digital signal and image processing methods. The following case studies are devoted to their application in biomedicine and they include the use of computational intelligence in EEG and EMG signal processing, image segmentation and registration in orthodontia, the human-machine interaction and the three-dimensional modelling using MS Kinect in diagnostics and treatment of human motion disorders and neurological diseases. Associated comments include remarks and references to the development of modern computational tools, biosensors, wireless communication and data fusion used in assistive technologies and robotic systems. Mathematical tools common to all these applications form the next part of the paper that includes notes to spectral analysis, functional transforms, digital filtering, image enhancement, classification of multi-dimensional signal components and optimization using neural networks. Final remarks emphasize the interdisciplinary significance of the digital signal processing forming the integrating basis of many diverse research areas.
Understanding the rapid information diffusion process in social media is critical for crisis management. Most of existing studies mainly focus on information diffusion patterns under the word-of-mouth spread mechanism...
