We have measured the gamma-ray emission spectrum of the Moon using the data collected by the Large Area Telescope onboard the Fermi satellite during its first seven years of operation, in the energy range from 30 MeV up to a few GeV. We have also studied the time evolution of the flux, finding a correlation with the solar activity. We have developed a full Monte Carlo simulation describing the interactions of cosmic rays with the lunar surface. The results of the present analysis can be explained in the framework of this model, where the production of gamma rays is due to the interactions of cosmic-ray proton and helium nuclei with the surface of the Moon. Finally, we have used our simulation to derive the cosmic-ray proton and helium spectra near Earth from the Moon gamma-ray data.

Summary form only given. As data scientists, we live in interesting times. data has been the No. 1 fast growing phenomenon on the Internet for the last decade. Big data analytics have the potential to reveal deep insights hidden by big data that exceeds the processing capacity of existing systems, such as peer influence among customers, revealed by analyzing shoppers' transactions, social and geographical data. In the past 40 years, data was primarily used to record and report business activities and scientific events, and in the next 40 years data will be used also to derive new insights, to influence business decisions and to accelerate scientific discovery. The key challenge is to provide the right platforms and tools to make reasoning of big data easy and simple. In this keynote talk, I will explore reuse opportunities and challenges from multiple dimensions towards delivering big data analytics as a service. I will illustrate by example the importance and challenges of utilizing programmable algorithm abstractions for many seemingly domain-dependent data analytics tasks. Another reuse opportunity is to exploit unconventional data structures and big data processing constructs to simplify and speed up the big data processing.

Background: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a major cause of cancer-related death worldwide due to poor patient prognosis and clinical outcome. Here, we studied the genetic variations underlying NSCLC pathogenesis based on their association to patient outcome after gemcitabine therapy. Results: Bioinformatics analysis was used to investigate possible effects of POLA2 G583R (POLA2+1747 GG/GA, dbSNP ID: rs487989) in terms of protein function. Using biostatistics, POLA2+1747 GG/GA (rs487989, POLA2 G583R) was identified as strongly associated with mortality rate and survival time among NSCLC patients. It was also shown that POLA2+1747 GG/GA is functionally significant for protein localization via green fluorescent protein (GFP)-tagging and confocal laser scanning microscopy analysis. The single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) causes DNA polymerase alpha subunit B to localize in the cytoplasm instead of the nucleus. This inhibits DNA replication in cancer cells and confers a protective effect in individuals with this SNP. Conclusions: The results suggest that POLA2+1747 GG/GA may be used as a prognostic biomarker of patient outcome in NSCLC pathogenesis. © 2014 Mah et al.;licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

The primitive of proxy signatures allows the original signer to delegate proxy signers to sign on messages on behalf of the original signer. It has found numerous applications in distributed computing scenarios where delegation of signing rights is common. Certificate less public key cryptography eliminates the complicated certificates in traditional public key cryptosystems without suffering from the key escrow problem in identity-based public key cryptography. In this paper, we reveal the relationship between the two important primitives of proxy signatures and certificate less signatures and present a generic conversion from the latter to the former. Following the generic transformation, we propose an efficient proxy signature scheme with a recent certificate less signature scheme.

Dark matter in the Milky Way may annihilate directly into γ rays, producing a monoenergetic spectral line. Therefore, detecting such a signature would be strong evidence for dark matter annihilation or decay. We search for spectral lines in the Fermi Large Area Telescope observations of the Milky Way halo in the energy range 200 MeV–500 GeV using analysis methods from our most recent line searches. The main improvements relative to previous works are our use of 5.8 years of data reprocessed with the Pass 8 event-level analysis and the additional data resulting from the modified observing strategy designed to increase exposure of the Galactic center region. We search in five sky regions selected to optimize sensitivity to different theoretically motivated dark matter scenarios and find no significant detections. In addition to presenting the results from our search for lines, we also investigate the previously reported tentative detection of a line at 133 GeV using the new Pass 8 data.

Topological landscapes have been proposed as a visual metaphor for contour trees that does not require an understanding of the theory involved in defining contour trees. The idea is to create a representative terrain with the same topological structure as a given contour tree. This representation exploits the natural human ability to interpret topography and results in an intuitive visualization of otherwise abstract information. However, topological landscapes still suffer from some of the same limitations as traditional contour tree visualization. Most notable is the fact that for complex functions landscapes can quickly become highly complex, exceeding the limits of human comprehension as well as the available computing resources. To address this challenge, we propose a new framework for the dynamic creation and visualization of hierarchical topological landscapes. Our system provides an interactive visualization of complex functions by utilizing a hierarchical decomposition of the contour tree as well as focus+context type interactions. For three dimensional data, we link the landscape display to flexible isosurface extraction in order to correlate terrain features with their corresponding three dimensional counterparts. We demonstrate the utility and versatility of our approach on a variety of both low and high dimensional data sets. © 2012 ACM.

Advances in mobile networking and information processing technologies have triggered vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) for traffic safety and value-added applications. Most efforts have been made to address the security concerns while little work has been done to investigate security and privacy for value-added applications in VANETs. To fill this gap, we propose a value-added application, specifically, a security and privacy preserving location-based service (LBS) scheme for VANETs. For each LBS transaction, the scheme provides authentication, integrity and non-repudiation for both the service provider and the user. A user can obtain the service in an anonymous way and hence user privacy is well protected. However, a tracing procedure can be invoked to find malicious users, thereby efficiently preventing users from abusing the anonymity provided by the system. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.
