Recent studies have focused on leveraging large-scale artificial intelligence (LAI) models to improve semantic representation and compression capabilities. However, the substantial computational demands of LAI models pose significant challenges for real-time communication scenarios. To address this, this paper proposes utilizing knowledge distillation (KD) techniques to extract and condense knowledge from LAI models, effectively reducing model complexity and computation latency. Nevertheless, the inherent complexity of LAI models leads to prolonged inference times during distillation, while their lack of channel awareness compromises the distillation performance. These limitations make standard KD methods unsuitable for task-oriented semantic communication scenarios. To address these issues, we propose a fast distillation method featuring a pre-stored compression mechanism that eliminates the need for repetitive inference, significantly improving efficiency. Furthermore, a channel adaptive module is incorporated to dynamically adjust the transmitted semantic information based on varying channel conditions, enhancing communication reliability and adaptability. In addition, an information bottleneck-based loss function is derived to guide the fast distillation process. Simulation results verify that the proposed scheme outperform baselines in term of task accuracy, model size, computation latency, and training data requirements. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

The most crucial public concern regarding health is elderly people's falls which tend to undesirable injuries leading to an increase in healthcare expenses for them. This research paper describes a method that uses AI technology with a barometer sensor to detect falls in elderly people. In addition to this, the AI model is trained on a diverse dataset comprising various activities of daily living, enabling it to distinguish between normal movements and those that may lead to falls. This method probably gives some notifications or missed calls to the caretakers as well as to the hospitals. When compared to many more sensors such as gyroscopes and some fitness trackers, the Apple Watch 4, and Samsung Gear S3 barometer sensor perform in a better better way. Key performance metrics such as absolute and altitude are calculated and compared based on a natural language processing (NLP) algorithm.

The problem of efficient trajectory optimisation for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVS) in dynamic and constrained environments is one where energy efficiency, spatial coverage, and path smoothness need to be balanced. The existing methods, namely RRT*, A*, and Dijkstra, are popular but generally heuristic and do not provide globally optimal solutions. They face significant limitations while dealing with complex geometries, dynamic obstacles, and multi-objective requirements. These challenges call for a mathematically sound framework that seamlessly integrates convex analysis and computational geometry to provide an optimal trajectory planning framework. This research work introduces a convex optimisation framework for UAV trajectory planning which unifies multiple objectives, like minimising energy consumption, maximising spatial coverage, and ensuring the smoothness of the path, into a single convex objective function. More importantly, it indicates that obstacle dynamics and uncertain environmental conditions are handled better by it, so it is relatively easier for safe and efficient navigation. Proven to converge faster and with higher precision than RRT*, A*, and Dijkstra, the approach proposed here enjoys intrinsic convex properties, which ensure global optimality. Qualitative measurements show the efficiency of the proposed framework. The result is energy efficiency of 90%, with 92% coverage, 98% constraint satisfaction, and 95% path smoothness, which is 15-25% better on all metrics than traditional approaches can offer. By bridging between theory in convex optimisation and practice for solving multi-objective problems in a dynamic setting, this study provides a more robust solution for UAV trajectory planning. © 2025 The Author(s)

This paper proposes an unsupervised deep-learning (DL) approach by integrating Transformer and Kolmogorov-Arnold networks (KAN) termed KANsformer to realize scalable beamforming for mobile communication systems. Specifically, we consider a classic multi-input single-output energy efficiency maximization problem subject to the total power budget. The proposed KANsformer first extracts hidden features via a multi-head self-attention mechanism and then reads out the desired beamforming design via KAN. Numerical results are provided to evaluate the KANsformer in terms of generalization performance, transfer learning and ablation experiment. Overall, the KANsformer outperforms the existing benchmark DL approaches, and is adaptable to the variation in the number of mobile users with real-time and near-optimal inference. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

ReconBoost: Boosting Can Achieve Modality Reconcilement

This paper explores a novel multi-modal alternating learning paradigm pursuing a reconciliation between the exploitation of uni-modal features and the exploration of cross-modal interactions. This is motivated by the fact that current paradigms of multi-modal learning tend to explore multi-modal features simultaneously. The resulting gradient prohibits further exploitation of the features in the weak modality, leading to modality competition, where the dominant modality overpowers the learning process. To address this issue, we study the modality-alternating learning paradigm to achieve reconcilement. Specifically, we propose a new method called ReconBoost to update a fixed modality each time. Herein, the learning objective is dynamically adjusted with a reconcilement regularization against competition with the historical models. By choosing a KL-based reconcilement, we show that the proposed method resembles Friedman's Gradient-Boosting (GB) algorithm, where the updated learner can correct errors made by others and help enhance the overall performance. The major difference with the classic GB is that we only preserve the newest model for each modality to avoid overfitting caused by ensembling strong learners. Furthermore, we propose a memory consolidation scheme and a global rectification scheme to make this strategy more effective. With the advancements of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) models, their capabilities are expanding significantly beyond content generation and the models are increasingly being used across diverse applications. Particularly, GenAI shows great potential in addressing challenges in the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem ranging from charging management to cyber-attack prevention. In this paper, we specifically consider Internet of electric vehicles (IoEV) and we categorize GenAI for IoEV into four different layers namely, EV’s battery layer, individual EV layer, smart grid layer, and security layer. We introduce various GenAI techniques used in each layer of IoEV applications. Subsequently, public datasets available for training the GenAI models are summarized. Finally, we provide recommendations for future directions. This survey not only categorizes the applications of GenAI in IoEV across different layers but also serves as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners by highlighting the design and implementation challenges within each layer. Furthermore, it provides a roadmap for future research directions, enabling the development of more robust and efficient IoEV systems through the integration of advanced GenAI techniques. © 2024, CC BY.

When implementing zero-trust edge computing, offloading computational tasks and data access through traditional model training and usage approaches can lead to increased latency. Since the traditional methods often involve extensive communication with a central server, creating additional network hopping stations/nodes resulting in increased latency. The challenge is bound to allocate a befitting resource at a given consumer demand. In this proposed system, a federated learning model based data offloading and consumer medical resource recommendation of IoT is discussed and validated. The user/consumer group and local training models are aligned with edge servers for data preprocessing and customization with a series of resources demand creation and coordination. The consumer resource allocating priorities are fine-grained with the proposed blockchain based priority analyzer for recommendation and allocation. The computational parameter such as resource pool, average waiting time, energy consumption and transmission trust delays are observed and validated. The proposed framework fetches consumer resources logs and synchronizes the centralized training model for effective scheduling and allocation of resources with an accuracy of 94.92% under the 5G operating spectrum. The technique has demonstrated minimal latency in offloading the data request demand and resource allocation at the cloud servers. © 2025 institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. In order for economies to expand and develop globally, innovation is essential. A popular statistic for evaluating innovation between countries is the Global Innovation Index (GII), which provides a thorough analysis of the state of innovation worldwide. In this context, this paper aims to contribute to the literature by examining the multi-factoral effects of the innovation ecosystem on innovation development (internal causal effects), and the impact of global trends and crises on the innovation ecosystem (external causal effects) in Montenegro. The resources provided in this paper offer valuable insights into the innovation landscape in Montenegro and the Western Balkans, as well as the impact of globalization, global trends, and crises on innovation in the region. The paper also discusses the function of innovation hubs such as the DigNest project, in promoting cooperation between academic institutions, government agencies and corporations, and supporting the exchange of knowledge and fresh concepts. © 2024 IEEE.

Smart Grids (SG) rely on Home Area Networks (HAN) and Neighborhood Area Networks (NAN) to ensure efficient power distribution, real-time monitoring, and seamless communication between smart devices. Despite these advantages, the use of public communication channels in HAN and NAN networks introduces critical challenges, such as vulnerability to impersonation, physical tampering, and scalability issues in resource-constrained environments. These issues compromise the stability, reliability, and security of SG environments. Existing protocols often fail to adequately address these challenges, particularly in ensuring resistance to physical tampering of supply lines and impersonation attacks. Additionally, they struggle to minimize the computation, communication, and energy costs associated with securing a resource-constrained SG environment. Therefore, we propose a robust key exchange and tamper-resistant protocol for HAN and NAN networks to address these limitations. The proposed protocol leverages the Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) mechanism to offer physical tampering resistance to smart meters. We validate our protocol formally using the Random or Real (RoR) model, which confirms its security robustness. Additionally, our informal security analysis highlights the protocol's resilience against impersonation, physical tampering attacks, etc. We analyze and compare the performance of the proposed protocol, which further demonstrates our protocol's effectiveness and security compared to competing protocols. Moreover, the proposed protocol achieves resource efficiency with 45.99% and 58.85% substantial reductions in computation overhead and energy overhead, respectively, compared to competing protocols. These results showcase the protocol's enhanced security and practicality for resource-constrained SG environments. © 2014 IEEE.

The development of industrial areas is frequently thought to have a good impact on society because it helps to meet the population's requirements. However, it also negatively impacts the environment, such as river pollution. If a country experiences rapid economic growth without considering the effects of industrial development on the environment, then human well-being will be affected. In this context, advanced development is attained by a developed nation while ensuring the well-being of society. Uncontrolled and unsustainable development increases environmental pollution, adversely affecting human health. As water is essential for human life, water resources, such as rivers, must be properly managed and protected to ensure human well-being. Thus, the study conducted on the changes in the water quality of the Kim Kim River provides insights into how unintended consequences of urban and industrial development can be identified and addressed using three sets of satellite imagery data from 2015, 2019 and 2020. The study was led to identify research problems and achieve the study objectives to obtain research results. The results of image classification analyses indicate that the development area near Sungai Kim Kim increased to 50%, with 38% from industrial areas. The RMSE for the image classification is 1.51, significantly better than the minimum allowed value of 2.00. It provides an understanding of the change in river water quality because of urban and industrial development. By highlighting the importance of sustainable development and the need to balance economic growth with environmental protection, this study contributes to the development of effective policies and strategies for the sustainable development of industrial areas.
