Ethylene glycol electro-oxidation reaction (EGOR) on nickel-based hydroxides (Ni(OH) 2 ) represents a promising strategy for generating value-added chemicals, i.e. formate and glycolate, and coupling water-electrolytic hydrogen production. The high product selectivity was one of the most significant area of polyols electro-oxidation process. Yet, developing Ni(OH) 2 -based EGOR electrocatalyst with highly selective product remains a challenge due to the unclear cognition about the EGOR mechanism. Herein, Mn-doped Ni(OH) 2 catalysts were utilized to investigate the EGOR mechanism. Experimental and calculation results reveal that the electronic states of e g * band play an important role in the catalytic performance and the product selectivity for EGOR. Broadening the e g * band could effectively enhance the adsorption capacity of glyoxal intermediates. On the other hand, this enhanced adsorption could lead to reduced side reactions associated with glycolate formation, simultaneously promoting the cleavage of C−C bonds. Consequently, the selectivity for formate was notably augmented by these enhancements. This work offers new insights into the regulation of catalyst electronic states for improving polyol electrocatalytic activity and product selectivity.

Rock avalanches are catastrophic events that can be triggered by various geological and climatic factors. Large-scale rock avalanches have been observed near fault zones, indicating a potential relationship between fault creep motions and the initiation of rock avalanches. This study proposes a physical mechanism that explains how fault creep leads to the initiation of near-fault rock avalanches through stress redistribution. The Muztag rock avalanche which occurred near the Muztag fault in Muztag Ata, Kashgar, China is revisited using field measurements and numerical modelling. We consider the Muztag rock avalanche model with its initial slope toe supported by a portion of the fault's hanging wall. Site-specific numerical simulations using discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) reveal that fault creep initially generates localized stress concentrations at the slope toe. Once the slope toe completely detaches from the hanging wall, the slope toe fails when the accumulated stress exceeds the local strength, resulting in a sharp stress drop. This stress redistribution triggers consecutive failure at the bottom of the rear edge and middle slope, forming a through-going shear sliding surface, which leads to the initiation of the overall rock avalanche. The kinematic processes of the avalanche, including sliding distance and deposit thickness, as modelled by DDA, are consistent with the post-failure characteristics of the Muztag rock avalanche. These findings suggest that tectonic fault creep motions can play a significant role in inducing near-fault rock avalanches. © 2025 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

The anodic methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) plays a crucial role in coupling with the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and enables the sustainable production of the high-valued formate. Nickel-based hydroxide (Ni(OH) 2 ) as MOR electrocatalyst has attracted enormous attention. However, the key factor determining the intrinsic catalytic activity remains unknown, which significantly hinders the further development of Ni(OH) 2 electrocatalyst. Here, we found that the electronic state within antibonding bands plays a decisive role in the whole MOR process. The onset potential depends on the deprotonation ability (Ni 2+ to Ni 3+ ), which was closely related to the band center of orbital. The closer of orbital to the Fermi level showed the stronger the deprotonation ability. Meanwhile, in the high potential region, the broadening of orbital would facilitate the electron transfer from methanol to catalysts (Ni 3+ to Ni 2+ ), further enhancing the catalytic properties. Our work for the first time clarifies the intrinsic relationship between electronic state and the MOR activities, which adds a new layer of understanding to the methanol electrooxidation research scene.

In the reinforcement of micro-cracks and soil, cement grouting often suffers from poor injectability due to particle size limitations. While ultra-fine cement produced through physical grinding can address this issue, it significantly increases cost and energy consumption. Moreover, ultra-fine cement is prone to aging when exposed to moisture and CO₂ in the air. To address these issues, this study proposes a new approach for in-situ particle size reduction of cement slurry through the mild corrosion of acetic acid. The refining effect of acetic acid on cement particles was investigated, along with its impact on mechanical properties and hydration products. The results show that acetic acid accelerates cement dissolution, promoting early-stage strength development and microstructure formation. The addition of 1.2 wt% acetic acid reduced the D90 particle size of the slurry by 36.4 %. Acetic acid also enhances the release of Ca²⁺ from clinker, increasing the precipitation of Ca(OH)₂, CaCO₃, and calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) at early stages, which serves as the primary source of early strength. Additionally, it raises the Ca/Si ratio of the early-formed C-S-H gel. However, excessive acetic acid can inhibit the further development of strength at later stages. The research demonstrates that premixed acetic acid activation is an effective approach for enhancing the performance of cementitious grouting materials, with promising potential to reduce energy consumption associated with physical cement grinding.

Plastics are the choice for package of products, medical implants, and other applications. But the transformation of plastics into minuscule particles, known as micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs, microplastics’ size <5 mm and nanoplastics’ size <1 μm), through physical action or chemical degradation, led to their widespread presence in virtually every ecosystem, and there are concerns about their impact on the environment and human health. Therefore, establishing standardized lines for maximum concentrations of MNPs in a system is essential to ensure the coexistence of MNPs with nature as well as humans. However, the complexity and diversity of MNPs in terms of size, polymer type, and density make the identification and quantification of MNPs a significant challenge. This review introduces representative treatment processes for purification or extraction of MNPs from environmental samples, and the advanced methods for quantitative analysis of MNPs. Special attention is paid to techniques related to the quantitative analysis of MNPs, and the advantages and limitations of these methods are discussed. Moreover, the necessity of establishing harmonized and standardized methods for the quantitative analysis of MNPs in investigating standardized lines of maximum concentrations of MNPs in the systems is envisioned, and the challenges and urgent issues with concerns for the future are discussed and summarized.

Regulating appropriate valence states of metal active centers, such as Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ and Mn 3+ /Mn 2+ , as well as surface vacancy defects, is crucial for enhancing the catalytic activity of cerium-based and manganese-based nanozymes. Drawing inspiration from the efficient substance exchange in rhizobia-colonized root cells of legumes, we developed a symbiosis nanozyme system with rhizobia-like CeO x nanoclusters robustly anchored onto root-like Mn 3 O 4 nanosupports (CeO x /Mn 3 O 4 ). The process of “substance exchange” between Ce and Mn atoms—reminiscent of electron transfer—not only fine-tunes the metal active sites to achieve optimal Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ and Mn 3+ /Mn 2+ ratios but also enhances the vacancy ratio through interface defect engineering. Additionally, the confinement anchoring of CeO x on Mn 3 O 4 ensures efficient electron transfer in catalytic reactions. The final CeO x /Mn 3 O 4 nanozyme demonstrates potent catalase-like (CAT-like) and superoxide dismutase-like (SOD-like) activities, excelling in both chemical settings and cellular environments with high reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. This research not only unveils a novel material adept at effectively eliminating ROS but also presents an innovative approach for amplifying the efficacy of nanozymes.

After the excavation of deep mining tunnels and underground caverns, the stability of surrounding rock controlled by structural planes is prone to structural damage and even engineering disasters due to three-dimensional stress redistribution and multi-directional dynamic construction interference. However, the shear mechanical behavior, fracture evolution mechanism and precursor characteristics of rockmass under true triaxial stress and multi-directional coupling disturbance are not unclear. Therefore, this study carried out true triaxial shear tests on limestone intermittent structural planes under uni-, bi- and tri-directional coupling disturbances to analyze its mechanical behavior, fracture evolution mechanism and precursor characteristics. The results show that as the disturbance direction increase, the shear strength of limestone generally decreases, while the roughness of structural planes and the degree of anisotropy generally exhibit an increasing trend. The proportion of shear cracks on the structural plane increases with the increase of shear stress. The disturbance strain rate before failure shows a U-shaped trend. Near to disturbance failure, there were more high-energy and high-amplitude acoustic emission events near the structural plane, and b -value drops rapidly below 1, while lg N / b ratio increased to above 3. These findings provide experimental recognition and theoretical support for assessing the stability of rockmass under blasting excavation.

In this paper, an unmanned aerial vehicle target detection and ranging system based on OpenCV and Tensor Flow is discussed, which can detect and avoid obstacles in time, improving the service life and intelligence level of the unmanned aerial vehicle. Firstly, gray-scale need to be put on the image captured by the camera. After Gaussian denoising, Sobel operator is applied for edge detection. Then, target recognition is carried out by using OpenCV and Tensor Flow, following by which is distance measurement, on the basis of OpenCV and video stream. Finally, the measurement results can be obtained.
