Although many approaches for iris recognition have been proposed in the last few years, few of them can perfect well in various image qualities. A novel method for iris recognition based on feature fusion is presented. Global and local iris features are extracted to improve the robustness of iris recognition for the various image quality. To represent the iris pattern efficiently, the global features are obtained from the 2D log Gabor wavelet filter and the local features are fused to complete the iris recognition. The weighting Euclidean distance and the Hamming distance are applied to match and classify. In addition, the thresholds are set up to reduce the computation time of match, and to increase robust iris recognition. Experimental results that confirm the benefits of using the proposed method are reported.

Ternary solution with NaCl and sucrose is widely employed in the osmotic dehydration process of food. In this paper we present a multifunctional sensor capable of directly sensing temperature and two physical parameters of solutions, namely ultrasonic velocity and electrical conductivity. By combination measurement of these three measurable parameters, the concentrations of various components in ternary solution with NaCl and sucrose can be simultaneously determined. A regression algorithm based on natural cubic spline interpolation and the least squares method is developed to estimate the concentrations of NaCl and sucrose, which considers the temperature influence on the multifunctional sensor and then enables decoupling of the reconstruction of concentrations in 4D space into 3D space. This sensor could prove valuable as a process control sensor in food industry.

The development of a novel, stand-alone instrument for the measurement of two gases (namely methane and carbon monoxide) is presented in this paper. The main contribution of this research work is focused on the novel method for the identification of the two gases from a pair of SnO/sub 2/ sensors. Instead of suppressing the cross-sensitivity of each of the sensors, this method is combining the information from both of them to calculate the two concentrations. A two-dimensional information table, obtained from a detailed calibration procedure, is used by this microcontroller-based method which is shown to offer a clear identification and measurement of the concentration of each of the two gases with a measurement error of less than 2%.

Detecting ship wakes from spaceborne SAR images is significant. But it is particularly difficult, especially detecting-thin line features. Because those features are not only affected by speckle but also affected by various other factors and the image resolution is often coarser than the wide of the corresponding objects. In this paper, an algorithm is developed based on line-support regions of similar gradient orientation and the Radon-transform. One of the primary applications of higher order statistics (HOS) has been for detection and estimation of nonGaussian signals in Gaussian noise of unknown covariance. This is motivated by the fact that higher order cumulants of Gaussian processes vanish. In the present work we study the opposite problem, namely, detection and estimation in nonGaussian noise. We estimate cumulants of nonGaussian processes in the presence of unknown deterministic and/or Gaussion signals. Our approach is to augment existing second-order estimation methods using cumulants. Finally, we illustrate the hybrid strategy using field real data examples. The consistency of the results is very encouraging because the improved cumulant matching strategy we describe can be effectively used with a limited amount of data.

In order to overcome the effect of the assumption between emissivity and wavelength on the measurement of true temperature and spectral emissivity for most engineering materials, a neural network based method is proposed for data processing while a blackbody furnace and three optical filters with known spectral transmittance curves were used to make up a true target. The experimental results show that the calculated temperatures are in good agreement with the temperature of the blackbody furnace, and the calculated spectral emissivity curves are in good agreement with the spectral transmittance curves of the filters. The method proposed has been proved to be an effective method for solving the problem of true temperature and emissivity measurement, and it can overcome the effect of the assumption between emissivity and wavelength on the measurement of true temperature and spectral emissivity for most engineering materials.

An advanced midcourse guidance law based on genetic algorithm (GA) and singular perturbation technique (SPT) is proposed in this paper. The proposed midcourse guidance formulation minimizes the flight time and maximizes terminal energy subject to a terminal intercept condition. GA is used to search the optimal attack angle for the flight trajectory, and SPT is applied to approximate the terminal flight time. By combining GA and SPT, the optimal flight guidance law is obtained consequently. Meanwhile, the paper completely eliminates the need for solving two-point boundary-value problems (TBPVP), which is too complex for derivation and implementation. The simulation results show that the resulting guidance law is near-optimal and the proposed method is valid.
