Speech synthesis plays an important role in Korean speech animation since it produces the sequence of phonetic phonemes by processing nearly all of the elements like phonological rules, to enunciate the input text. To make a speaking facial model which uses the motions of lips and surrounding part of the face, it is necessary to extract visual informations from the output of a speech synthesis system. The paper investigates a set of facial elements enough to make a realistic speech animation by examining the visual factors not available from speech synthesis systems as well as extracting signals from the result of speech synthesis that will cause visible changes in facial expression.

Summary form only given. For a long time, the fundamental six emotions proposed by Ekman were widely used for the expression of universal human emotions. But the classification can not present the facial expression directly from the uprising conceptual emotion. We notice that this problem is caused by the conceptuality of the emotions which can have a lot of expressions on a facial model. We present a new standard to classify the emotions in the expression sense, not in the conceptuality. This means we recognize each facial expressions as a meaningful visual unit. Each meaning of emotional expressions help us to define a visual level of detail of the expressions. Moreover the methodology which leads to the concept of expression can be applied to non-emotional expressions. We define additional facial expression from the expressions proposed by Faigin which express human physical state. The birth of the standard to express facial actions enable us both to classify emotional expression and to investigate each expression in detail, as well as to extend the region of facial expressions.

Recently developed 3D scanning devices are capable of capturing point clouds, as well as additional information, such as normals and texture. This paper describes a new and fast reverse engineering method for creating a 3D computerized model from data captured by such contemporary 3D scanning devices. The proposed method aggregates large-scale 3D scanned data into an extended Hierarchical Space Decomposition Model (HSDM) based on Octree data structure. This model can represent both an object’s boundary surface and its interior volume. The HSDM enables data reduction, while preserving sharp geometrical features and object topology. As a result the execution time of the reconstruction process is significantly reduced. Moreover, the proposed model naturally allows multiresolution surface reconstruction, represented by a mesh with regular properties. Based on the proposed volumetric model, the surface reconstruction process becomes more robust and stable with respect to sampling noise.

This paper presents an interactive hierarchical motion control system dedicated to the animation of human figure locomotion in virtual environments. As observed in gait experiments, controlling the trajectories of the feet during gait is a precise end-point control task. Inverse kinematics with optimal approaches are used to control the complex relationships between the motion of the body and the coordination of its legs. For each step, the simulation of the support leg is executed first, followed by the swing leg, which incorporates the position of the pelvis from the support leg. That is, the foot placement of the support leg serves as the kinematics constraint while the position of the pelvis is defined through the evaluation of a control criteria optimization. Then, the swing leg movement is defined to satisfy two criteria in order: collision avoidance and control criteria optimization. Finally, animation attributes, such as controlling parameters and pre-processed motion modules, are applied to achieve a variety of personalities and walking styles.
