Reverse engineering (RE) deals with an enormous number of irregular and scattered digitized points that require intensive processing in order to reconstruct the surfaces of an object. Surface reconstruction of freeform objects is based on geometrical and topological criteria. Current fitting methods reconstruct an object using a bottom-up approach, from points to a dense mesh, and finally into smoothed connected freeform sub-surfaces. This type of reconstruction, however, can cause topological problems that lead to undesired surface fitting results. Such problems are particularly common with concave shapes. To avoid problems of this type, the paper proposes a new method that automatically detects the topological structure of an object as a base for surface fitting. The topological reconstruction method described in the paper is based on two stages: (1) creating 3D non-self-intersecting iso-curves from a 3D triangular mesh and (2) extracting a topological graph. The feasibility of the proposed topological reconstruction method is demonstrated on several examples using freeform objects with complex topologies.

Cryotherapy is a treatment modality that uses a technique to selectively freeze tissue and thereby cause controlled tissue destruction. The procedure involves placement of multiple small diameter probes through the perineum into the prostate tissue at selected spatial intervals. Transrectal ultrasound is used to properly position the cylindrical probes before activation of the liquid Argon cooling element, which lowers the tissue temperature below -40 degrees Centigrade. Tissue effect is monitored by transrectal ultrasound changes as well as thermocouples placed in the tissue. The computer-based cryotherapy simulation system mimics the major surgical steps involved in the procedure. The simulated real-time ultrasound display is generated from 3-D ultrasound datasets where the interaction of the ultrasound with the instruments as well as the frozen tissue is simulated by image processing. The thermal and mechanical simulations of the tissue are done using a modified finite-difference/finite- element method optimized for real-time performance. The simulator developed is a part of a comprehensive training program, including a computer-based learning system and hands-on training program with a proctor, designed to familiarize the physician with the technique and equipment involved. © 2002, The authors.

The landscape of natural language processing (NLP) has been revolutionized by advancements that enable the upstream training of knowledge-rich models for downstream tasks, particularly named entity recognition (NER). Traditional NER approaches, treating it as a sequence labeling problem, often fail to deeply understand the whole text and to capture syntactic nuances of text. To address these issues, we introduce PFMRC, a novel machine reading comprehension (MRC) framework that leverages the strengths of both contextual semantics and syntactic information for enhanced NER performance. PFMRC employs a dual-pronged feature extraction strategy, utilizing RoBERTa and BiGRU to encode text features for contextual semantic information and representing them as node features of the graph structure, and a weighted embedding representation to translate syntactic dependencies into graph-structured edge features. Our model further incorporates Graph Attention Networks (GAT) to harmonize node and edge features, facilitating a nuanced understanding of text. The integration of prior knowledge and the modeling of intricate syntactic relationships through Graph Attention Networks (GAT) not only improves entity recognition accuracy but also enriches the feature representation, leading to more robust NER outcomes. Extensive experiments on three Chinese datasets demonstrate PFMRC's superior performance over state-of-the-art models. © 2024 IEEE.

Extended linear programming in models of location of concrete mix production plants

The paper discusses the location problem of production plants exemplified by concrete mix production plants (Ist model), taking into consideration the demand variability in time (IInd model), and the analytical method of the localization of industrial plant with a considerable amount of transportation costs of concrete mix and concrete aggregate (III rd model). Changes in demand for concrete mix in time t lead to changes in plants' location. Assuming that there exist concrete mix production plants, one should make a simulation of demand for concrete mix which occurs at the time t. The presented models are the essential generalisation of the problem discussed in the earlier papers. The matrix of construction costs must be always defined as a four-dimensions vector (the set of four values): the production plant construction cost, the cost of plant's modernisation (which is the result of changing demand for concrete mix), the cost of liquidation (dismantling) of a production plant or the cost of moving of an existing production plant. Three new generalised notions concerning the classical linear programming (mixed programming, mixed programming with time and two-optimised conjugate linear system) have been introduced. The algorithms describing the above-mentioned models of location changes were suggested, and programmes solving the location problems were prepared in PASCAL.

Virtual assembly training systems show a high potential to complement or even replace physical setups for training of assembly processes in and beyond the automotive industry. The precondition for the breakthrough of virtual training is that it overcomes the problems of former approaches. The paper presents the design approach taken during the development of a game-based, virtual training system for procedural assembly knowledge in the EU-FP7 project VISTRA. One key challenge to address when developing virtual assembly training is the extensive authoring effort for setting up virtual environments. Although knowledge from the product and manufacturing design is available and could be used for virtual training, a concept for integration of this data is still missing. This paper presents the design of a platform which transfers available enterprise data into a unified model for virtual training and thus enables virtual training of workers at the assembly line before the physical prototypes exist. The data requirements and constraints stemming from industrial partners involved in the project will be discussed. A second hurdle for virtual training is the insufficient user integration and acceptance. In this context, the paper introduces an innovative hardware set-up for game-based user interaction, which has been chosen to enhance user involvement and acceptance of virtual training. © 2012 IEEE.

EEG-based neuro-adaptive systems are becoming increasingly popular in the field of learning and education. Their ability to detect changes in brain activity in real-time makes them unique and enables monitoring mental workload (MWL) and fatigue. We present a neuro-adaptive system that combines an Augmented Reality (AR) piano tutorial with online EEG measurements of its user, delivered by a passive Brain computer Interface (BCI) system. The MWL was measured by means of EEG and a Filter Bank Common Spatial Patter algorithm (FBCSP) was trained to differentiate between low and high levels of MWL. Low levels were connected to the 0-back task and high levels to the 2-back task. The n-back task was a calibration task to train a binary Machine Learning (ML) classifier to differentiate between low and high MWL. This trained ML algorithm was then used as the central element of the passive BCI, which constantly classified small windows of the EEG during the piano tutorial and adapted the difficulty of the tutorial. 22 Participants were randomly separated into two groups: adaptive and non-adaptive piano tutorial. The results of the non-adaptive group showed significantly higher levels of classified MWL throughout the piano tutorial.

The characteristics that make up the general identity of engineering technology (ET) degree programs and their graduates are well known;however, the explicit characteristics of ET capstone nationally is unknown. In other words, there are multiple gaps in the general ET capstone body of knowledge that need to be filled in order to fully understand and describe the current state. The purpose of this short paper is to provide a synopsis of 1) the current known identity of ET education, 2) existing ET capstone research, and 3) ET capstone knowledge gaps (i.e., future research areas). Internal preliminary findings comparing traditional engineering degree programs and ET capstone experiences include differences in duration, project types and sources, budgets, assessments, etc. Additionally, findings show that ET degree programs were not included in multiple large-scale national capstone-based research studies investigating current and longitudinal practices, design teaching taxonomies, and graduate career readiness. Deeper insights into ET capstone practices are needed and can help empower stakeholders (e.g., faculty, administrators, researchers, etc.) to articulate ET’s value more effectively within the broader landscape of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and hopefully spark interest in new research collaborations within the general capstone community in order to address identified knowledge gaps. A better understood and possibly improved ET capstone experience could help better prepare graduates to transition into the workforce by minimizing the time needed to acquire new knowledge, skills, and abilities after being hired. © 2024, American Society for engineering Education. DRR is an important technique in radiotherapy imaging application and its real time rendering is critical in radiotherapy treatment planning. A method for the real time rendering of DRR in the frequency domain is presented. Different solutions based on the trade-off between speed and image quality are proposed among different applications. The technique has shown to be effective using both phantom and clinical data sets.

Current radiosity methods rely on the calculation of geometric factors, known as form-factors, which describe energy exchange between pairs of surfaces in the environment. The most computationally efficient method for form-factor generation is a numerical technique known as the hemi-cube algorithm. Use of the hemi-cube is based on assumptions about the geometry of the surfaces involved. First, this paper examines the types of errors and visual artifacts that result when these assumptions are violated. Second, the paper shows that these errors occur more frequently in progressive refinement radiosity than in the originally proposed full matrix radiosity solution. Next, a new analytical technique for determining form-factors that is immune to the errors of the hemicube algorithm is introduced. Finally, a hybrid progressive refinement method that invokes the new technique to correctly compute formfactors when hemi-cube assumptions are violated is presented.

This paper proposes a method for robustly matching active appearance models (AAMs) on images with gross disturbances (outliers). The method consists of two steps. First, an initial residual is calculated by comparing model and image appearance, and modes of the residual are analyzed. Second, all possible mode combinations are tested by evaluating an objective function. The objective function allows the selection of an outlier-free mode combination. Experiments demonstrate the ability of the robust matching method to successfully cope with outliers - compared to standard AAM matching, no degeneration of the model during matching occurs.
