A special class of nonlinear electronic circuits exhibits jump effects which occurs e.g. when the state space of an electronic system contains a fold. This can lead to difficulties during the simulation of these systems with standard circuit simulators. A common treatment to overcome these problems is to regularise these systems by adding suitably located parasitic inductors L's and capacitors C's. We propose a geometric approach and derive methods for solving circuit equations by means of algorithms from computational differential geometry. In this paper the geometric methods will be applied to an electronic multivibrator and numerical results will be presented.

Electromagnetic (EM) modeling and simulation techniques for passive linear systems as in 3D ICs and SIPs are presented. On TSVs' we present high throughput analytical 2D admittance (CG) and impedance (RL) models, with consideration of MOS effect in silicon. These 2D models are computationally useful for parasitic estimates, while the simulation of critical subsystems requires 3D accurate models. We show results from an emerging 3D field solver solution to the computation of the RL matrices with very low overhead on the matrix elements computation, being analytically tractable for cylindrical TSVs. For extraction and simulation of systems containing a significant number of passive elements, the output from field solver is best expressed as passive dynamical models generated with an efficient semi-definite programming algorithm.

The objective of semantic segmentation in microscopic images is to extract the cellular, nuclear or tissue components. This problem is challenging due to the large variations of these components features (size, shape, orientation or texture). In this paper we improve the technique presented in [17] used to identify the epithelial nuclei (crypt) against interstitial nuclei in microscopic images taken from colon tissues. In the proposed enhanced approach, the crypt inner boundary is detected using the closing morphological pyramid instead of morphological hierarchy. The outer crypt border is determined by the epithelial nuclei, overlapped by the maximal isoline of the inner boundary. The use of sampling in building the pyramid offers computational efficiency, reduces the amount of used memory, increase the robustness and preserve the quality results. An analysis of the two approaches is performed considering the number of pixels processed to create each level. Also the relation between the levels of the hierarchical structures is established.

Modeling energy-minimizing curves have many applications and are a basic problem of Geometric *** this paper,we propose the method for geometric design of energy-minimizing B′ezier ***,the necessary and sufficient condition on the control points for B′ezier curves to have minimal internal energy is *** on this condition,we propose the geometric constructions of three kinds of B′ezier curves with minimal internal energy including stretch energy,strain energy and jerk *** some control points,the other control points can be determined as the linear combination of the given control *** compare the three kinds of energy-minimizing B′ezier curves via curvature combs and curvature plots,and present the collinear properties of quartic energy-minimizing B′ezier *** also compare the proposed method with previous methods on efficiency and ***,several applications of the curve generation technique,such as curve interpolation with geometric constraints and modeling of circle-like curves are discussed.

This paper presents the Advanced Collaborative Educational Model (ACEM) for conception of collaborative learning activities. It is based on collaboration between teachers through virtual interactions, reutilization, interoperability and adaptability of learning activities. The definition of learning activity is oriented to a constructivist approach. Tagging collaboration and ontologies are also considered in order to facilitate sharing knowledge in a more effective and personalized way. The main goal of this research is to describe teachers' procedures when interacting with the collaborative environment and to develop mechanisms to support teachers in their tasks, mainly in the creation of learning activities to be used in an e-learning context. The model will be implemented through a high-level graphical tool that facilitates synchronous and asynchronous communication.

Minimally invasive surgical procedures like biopsies require the insertion of a needle to reach a specific tissue from where samples are taken. This process is affected by a number of errors that can lead to a different needle pathway than originally planned. In the case of brain-tumor biopsies, these errors can be caused by the brain shifting when the skull is drilled, measurement errors due to the physical framework that supports the biopsy needle or some other human errors. To provide support for preoperative planning, we introduce the concept of a biopsy-needle stability-map. This map provides information on how stable a biopsy-needle pathway is. We also introduce an algorithm for finding the reachable points on the tumor border from one specific entry point. A technique for automatically selecting the needle pathway that offers the biggest minimal distance to any blood vessel is also presented. A 3D representation of the regions of interest (tumor, blood vessels) together with the needle pathway and the reachable points of the tumor has also been implemented. The resulting stability map visually represents, using color-coding, how close to any blood vessel the pathways surrounding the main one are.

Low power NoC switch using novel adaptive virtual channels

Adaptive Virtual Channel (AVC) is proposed as a novel technique to achieve low powerNoC switch. Power supply gating is employed to reduce the power dissipation of NoC switchwithout degrading network performance. Hierarchical multiplexing tree is used to achieve efficient AVC. AVC could reduce both dynamic and leakage power of the switch. Hierarchical multiplexing tree decreases the area of the switch which reduces the dynamic power by 60%. Using the leakage power reduction technique, the average leakage power consumption of Adaptive Virtual Channels is reduced by up to 97%.

Automatic image annotation is a promising solution to narrow the semantic gap between low-level content and high-level semantic concept, which has been an active research area in the fields of image retrieval, pattern recognition, and machine learning. However, even the most dedicated annotation algorithms are often unsatisfactory. Image annotation refinement has attracted much more attention recently. In this paper, a novel refinement algorithm using dynamic voting based on mutual information is proposed. Unlike the traditional refinement algorithm, the proposed algorithm adopts dynamic weighted voting to measure the dependence between the candidate annotations, which not only permits that the annotations with higher probabilities deny the annotations with lower probabilities, but also permits that the annotations with lower probabilities deny the annotations with higher probabilities. The proposed refinement algorithm adopts progressive method instead of iterative, which can significantly decrease the time cost of refining annotations. In order to further improve efficiency without sacrificing precision, we propose the block-based normalized cut algorithm to segment image. Experiments conducted on standard Washington Ground Truth Image Database demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed approach for refining image annotations. © 2011 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

Image retrieval has been an active research topic due to its great importance in the field of image management, digital library and web searching. However, the performances of the existing approaches, including text-based or content-based image retrieval, are often unsatisfactory. Inspired by text-based image retrieval, we propose semantic-based approach, whose similarity computation is semantic relevance rather than word matching. In this paper, a novel approach of progressive image retrieval based on content and semantic is proposed. The proposed retrieval model overcomes the drawbacks of pure content-based and text-based image retrieval, which exploits the strengths of both semantic- and content-based methods, minimizing their weaknesses. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method for image retrieval. © 2011 ISSN.

Accurate description and analysis of liver vascular system is critical in diagnosis and treatment of liver diseases. Even though there are plenty of researches put their efforts on the acquisition of optimal visual information in liver vascular system, quite a few studies focus on the quantitatively geometrical and structural analysis on them. In this paper, we proposed a graph description and analysis framework for liver vascular structure representation. First of all, the vessels were enhanced through Hessian eigenvalue calculation in order to be conveniently segmented from the liver image. Secondly, a three dimensional thinning based skeletonization method was applied on the vessel image to obtain the topological structure of the liver vessels. The skeleton result was then represented as a graph, followed by the geometrical attributes computation. Finally, the graph was efficiently pruned to form a directed acyclic vascular tree without redundant and irrelevant branches based on a flow conservation approach. The experiments on liver CT datasets show that the proposed framework can effectively obtain the liver vascular structure and its quantitative description. Copyright © 2011 Binary Information Press.
