Shape Intrinsic Properties for Free-Form Object Matching

Despite extensive research and rapid increase of computing power, free-form object matching still remains a challenging problem in CAD/CAM areas. In this paper, various object features are discussed, and matching methods which use these features are introduced along with robust computational algorithms for umbilical points and intrinsic wireframes. The similarity of matched objects is assessed with three proposed tests. Each algorithm is demonstrated with examples.

In this paper several novel methods to account for fetal movements during fetal Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fetal MRI) are explored. We show how slice-to-volume reconstruction methods can be used to account for motion adaptively during the scan. Three candidate methods are tested for their feasibility and integrated into a computer simulation of fetal MRI. The first alters the main orientation of the stacks used for reconstruction, the second stops if too much motion occurs during slice acquisition and the third steers the orientation of each slice individually. Reconstruction informed adaptive scanning can provide a peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) improvement of up to 2 dB after only two stacks of scanned slices and is more efficient with respect to the uncertainty of the final reconstruction.

Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is a good candidate for computer vision applications. CNN is well known for its great classification accuracy at image recognition tasks. The cost of CNN is its large power consumption as it needs a lot of multiplication and addition operations. Approximation can reduce the power consumption. CNNs can be implemented by CPUs, GPUs or FPGAs. In this paper, the proposed CNN is implemented on Xilinx XC7Z020 FPGA and is trained to recognize MNIST dataset This CNN is approximated through quantization which reduces the accuracy only by 0.53% while using 7-bits for the implementation. A reduction of 2.7X is achieved in energy consumption compared to the conventional design which uses 16-bits. Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration (DPR) reconfigures the FPGA during the run time with appropriate power consumption design if the battery level decreases. This enables recognition applications to run with low power budget but with sacrificing minor accuracy instead of termination.

Image retrieval based on region is one of the most promising and active research directions in recent year's CBIR, while region segmentation, feature selection and feature extraction of region are key issues. However, the existing approaches always adopt a uniform approach of segmentation and feature extraction for all images in the same system. In this paper, we propose adaptive image segmentation and feature extraction approach according to different category image for image retrieval system. To improve performance, we propose adaptive segmentation approach according to different category image. Textured image is segmented by Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM), while non-textured image is segmented by our proposed block-based normalized cut. To accurately describe feature of region, we propose weight assignment method for centroid pixel and its neighbor by convolution with normal distribution when image segmentation by GMM. To improve generalization, we propose adaptive number of Fourier descriptors of shape signature which depends on the energy distribution of Fourier descriptors, instead of fixed number by experience. To simply and efficiently describe the spatial relationships of multi-object or multi-region in same image, we apply simplified topological relationships. The experiments demonstrate that proposed approaches are superior to the traditional approaches. © 2010 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

In this paper we study nonconvex and nonsmooth optimization problems with semi-algebraic data, where the variables vector is split into several blocks of variables. The problem consists of one smooth function of the entire variables vector and the sum of nonsmooth functions for each block separately. We analyze an inertial version of the Proximal Alternating Linearized Minimization (PALM) algorithm and prove its global convergence to a critical point of the objective function at hand. We illustrate our theoretical findings by presenting numerical experiments on blind image deconvolution, on sparse non-negative matrix factorization and on dictionary learning, which demonstrate the viability and effectiveness of the proposed method. We propose an approach for on-line detection of small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and estimation of their relative positions and velocities in the 3D environment from a single moving camera in the context of sense and avoid systems. This problem is challenging both from a detection point of view, as there are no markers on the targets available, and from a tracking perspective, due to misdetection and false positives. Furthermore, the methods need to be computationally light, despite the complexity of computer vision algorithms, to be used on UAVs with limited payload. To address these issues we propose a multi-staged framework that incorporates fast object detection using an AdaBoost-based approach, coupled with an on-line visual-based tracking algorithm and a recent sensor fusion and state estimation method. Our framework allows for achieving real-time performance with accurate object detection and tracking without any need of markers and customized, high-performing hardware resources.

In this publication, the interactive planning and reconstruction of cranial 3D Implants under the medical prototyping platform MeVisLab as alternative to commercial planning software is introduced. In doing so, a MeVisLab prototype consisting of a customized data-flow network and an own C++ module was set up. As a result, the computer-Aided Design (CAD) software prototype guides a user through the whole workflow to generate an implant. Therefore, the workflow begins with loading and mirroring the patients head for an initial curvature of the implant. Then, the user can perform an additional Laplacian smoothing, followed by a Delaunay triangulation. The result is an aesthetic looking and well-fitting 3D implant, which can be stored in a CAD file format, e.g. STereoLithography (STL), for 3D printing. The 3D printed implant can finally be used for an in-depth pre-surgical evaluation or even as a real implant for the patient. In a nutshell, our research and development shows that a customized MeVisLab software prototype can be used as an alternative to complex commercial planning software, which may also not be available in every clinic. Statics is a backbone course for several engineering disciplines and also a pre-requisite for dynamics and mechanics of materials. Researchers have identified a lack of understanding of statics as a significant source of difficulties in terms of both conceptual understanding, representation of free body diagrams (FBD) and problem-solving ability. Our approach to improve the learning of the concept of friction focuses on students' understanding of acting forces and specific components of such forces of a system. The presented quasi-experimental study investigates how the use of visuo-haptic simulations can improve students understanding and use of FBD. Specifically, we compared two visuo-haptic simulations; one that explicitly visually depicts FBD of multiple objects interacting with different surfaces, while the other only provides haptic feedback while students engage in the same forms of interaction. Our results suggest that using the visuo-haptic simulator with FBD leads to better learning results. These findings support the hypothesis that appropriately sequenced visuo-haptic simulators with well-designed visual cues can help students to better understand and use FBD.

Image annotation refinement using dynamic weighted voting based on mutual information

Automatic image annotation is a promising solution to narrow the semantic gap between low-level content and high-level semantic concept, which has been an active research area in the fields of image retrieval, pattern recognition, and machine learning. However, even the most dedicated annotation algorithms are often unsatisfactory. Image annotation refinement has attracted much more attention recently. In this paper, a novel refinement algorithm using dynamic voting based on mutual information is proposed. Unlike the traditional refinement algorithm, the proposed algorithm adopts dynamic weighted voting to measure the dependence between the candidate annotations, which not only permits that the annotations with higher probabilities deny the annotations with lower probabilities, but also permits that the annotations with lower probabilities deny the annotations with higher probabilities. The proposed refinement algorithm adopts progressive method instead of iterative, which can significantly decrease the time cost of refining annotations. In order to further improve efficiency without sacrificing precision, we propose the block-based normalized cut algorithm to segment image. Experiments conducted on standard Washington Ground Truth Image Database demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed approach for refining image annotations. © 2011 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.
