Instruction caches are usually designed to fetch the whole block from memory in case of a miss. However, the fetched blocks might contain branch instructions which if taken, will render the rest of the block useless. A novel approach is introduced, namely the Precise Control, which fetches only the words of a cache block that are likely to be used. The performance of Precise Control is evaluated and it is shown that it has a positive influence on system performance. Precise Control reduces the words fetched from memory by up to 60%, thus reducing significantly the communication overhead between cache and main memory as well as the total execution time.

This paper describes a Virtual Environment system designed to aid in training interventional radiologists in inferior vena cava filter placement. It is being developed as part of a VE simulator for a number of surgical and interventional radiology procedures at the Laboratory for Advanced computer Applications in Medicine at the George Washington University. In this procedure a filter is placed in the inferior vena cava to prevent blood clots from the lower portion of the body from reaching the lungs and causing a pulmonary embolus. The simulation is designed to provide both tutorial and testing modes for the filter placement procedure.

A novel design of a test pattern generator (TPG) for built-in self-testing (BIST) of path delay faults, is proposed. For an n-input CUT, the TPG generates a sequence of length (n.2/sup n/+1), that includes all n.2/sup n/ single-input-change (SIC) test pairs, and hence optimal. The generation of such a sequence of minimum length (i.e., n.2/sup n/+1) was an open problem. A simple iterative circuit of the TPG is then constructed. This provides minimum test application time for testing path delay faults, and compares favorably with the earlier BIST designs.

To make a speaking facial model which uses the motions of lips and surrounding part of the face, it is necessary to extract visual informations from the output of a speech synthesis system. The paper investigates a set of facial elements enough to make a realistic speech animation by examining the visual factors not available from speech synthesis systems as well as extracting signals from the result of speech synthesis that will cause visible changes in facial expression.

Summary form only given. For a long time, the fundamental six emotions proposed by Ekman were widely used for the expression of universal human emotions. But the classification can not present the facial expression directly from the uprising conceptual emotion. We notice that this problem is caused by the conceptuality of the emotions which can have a lot of expressions on a facial model. We present a new standard to classify the emotions in the expression sense, not in the conceptuality. This means we recognize each facial expressions as a meaningful visual unit. Each meaning of emotional expressions help us to define a visual level of detail of the expressions. Moreover the methodology which leads to the concept of expression can be applied to non-emotional expressions. We define additional facial expression from the expressions proposed by Faigin which express human physical state. The birth of the standard to express facial actions enable us both to classify emotional expression and to investigate each expression in detail, as well as to extend the region of facial expressions.

A prototype concurrent engineering tool has been developed for the preliminary design of composite topside structures for modern navy warships. This tool, named GELS for the Concurrent engineering of Layered Structures, provides designers with an immediate assessment of the impacts of their decisions on several disciplines which are important to the performance of a modern naval topside structure, including electromagnetic interference effects (EMI), radar cross section (RCS), structural integrity, cost, and weight. Preliminary analysis modules in each of these disciplines are integrated to operate from a common set of design variables and a common materials database. Performance in each discipline and an overall fitness function for the concept are then evaluated. A graphical user interface (GUI) is used to define requirements and to display the results from the technical analysis modules. Optimization techniques, including feasible sequential quadratic programming (FSQP) and exhaustive search are used to modify the design variables to satisfy all requirements simultaneously. The development of this tool, the technical modules, and their integration are discussed noting the decisions and compromises required to develop and integrate the modules into a prototype conceptual design tool.
