Localization problems are occurred in various applications, indoor and outdoor. The location data of objects is one of the primary information that can be further used in many applications, especially in logistic management in hospitals. Beacon technology based on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is one of the technologies used for indoor localization. With multiple BLE locators used as reference points, the receiver can sense the signal with various receive signal strength indicators (RSSI). The distance between each locator and the receiver can be estimated, so that the receiver can be located. However, a number of factors affect the accuracy of localization, e.g., poses of the receiver and the quantity of locator. The evolution of healthcare systems worldwide necessitates continual improvement in hospital management practices, particularly pharmaceutical management. This paper explores transforming traditional pharmaceutical management systems in large and medium-sized hospitals in Thailand into smart systems using Value Stream Mapping (VSM) as a guiding tool. Traditional systems often face challenges such as inefficiencies and medication errors. VSM, rooted in lean management principles, offers a structured approach to visualize and optimize processes. Additionally, smart technologies like automated inventory systems and electronic health records enhance pharmaceutical management effectiveness. Through a comprehensive research methodology encompassing case studies, data collection, and VSM analysis, this study identifies inefficiencies and proposes evidence-based strategies for improvement. Results from a case study highlight the benefits of VSM implementation in enhancing pharmacy operations, emphasizing improved patient care and operational efficiency. The implementation of a smart medication dispensing system shows promising results in reducing workload and accommodating increased patient arrivals. Continued evaluation and refinement are crucial for maximizing benefits and addressing emerging challenges effectively. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

Falls are one of the most dangerous problems for the elderly. A reliable fall detection system can aid in reducing the harmful repercussions of an unintentional fall. The focus of this paper is on a dataset that includes signals from portable devices. We propose a simple feature selection approach to reduce the number of effective input attributes based on a voting strategy. The dataset is classified into three categories, i.e., pre-fall, fall and post-fall using various machine learning approaches. The computational time is significantly reduced for most of the classification algorithms, and the relative reduction reaches to 66.67% with decision tree algorithm. Classification accuracy can reach as high as 95.17% when using neural network, while the relative reductions on the classification accuracy due to the feature selection do not exceed 1.50%. © 2022 IEEE.

For acute stroke patients, time to recognize the stroke symptom onset is crucial for the lifesaving treatment. The automatic detection of stroke signs has been increasingly developed for practical use. The better timely classification results could allow better detection of the symptoms and avoid morbidity and mortality. In this study, we proposed using cosine similarity between the left and right sides of the face as a part of features for classifying the stroke elderly patients from healthy elderly participants. We employed our method on images from the Toronto NeuroFace dataset. The results showed high classification accuracy (the average accuracy of 97.8998% from 6 classification methods). These results indicate that the cosine similarity features can be useful to detect facial asymmetry and pose very promising potential for elderly stroke detection. © 2022 IEEE.

Autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) have now been used in various applications in order to assist people in many situations, e.g. transportation and certain services in hospitals and factories. As a service robot, interaction between human and robots is unavoidable. The interaction can be occurred in various forms, e.g. tele-presence and human-robot collaboration. Human and robots work closely with each other resulting in physical risks that need to be managed carefully. A number of research works of AMRs have been conducted in recent years as an increase in demand and technology viability. However, as the development of primary functions is the first priority in development phase, safety concern is usually ignored. In this research, the safety standard ISO 13482, associated with personal care robots, is considered in the design phase. Hence, the risk will be minimized. In this case, the service robots is developed in the context of hospitals, especially for the cart moving operation assistance.

In an aging society, dementia is a notable issue that occurs as individuals grow older, impacting cognitive ability and emotional well-being. This has led to the development of cognitive assessment tools to facilitate early detection of cognitive impairment. Limited utilization of computerized tests across different countries is due to the mismatch of existing computerized tests between the educational and cultural backgrounds of the elderly; this study sought to address this issue by developing the Integrated Cognitive Test (ICT). ICT is designed as a computerized tool for assessing the risk of cognitive impairment in Thai older adults with an easy-to-use interface. Thirty-six elderly participants with diverse education levels and without prior cognitive impairment diagnoses participated in the study. They completed MoCA, MMSE, and ICT in a single-day experiment. The scores, reaction time, and overall completion time were recorded for analysis. The study found significant differences between ICT and MMSE scores (p<0.001) but not with MoCA (p=0.421); the results indicated ICT's potential alignment with MoCA for cognitive assessment. The decision tree attained 80.60% accuracy in cognitive impairment risk classification using MoCA output. Key features impacting classification included average reaction time in working memory, memory recall, and standard deviation in language tasks. Overall, the analysis demonstrated that ICT is an effective tool for assessing cognitive impairment, for older adults. Furthermore, designing a cognitive test that considers the unique education and cultural backgrounds of the Thai elderly can serve as a model for creating similar tests for other populations.

Predicting pedestrian motion trajectories is crucial for path planning and motion control of autonomous vehicles. Accurately forecasting crowd trajectories is challenging due to the uncertain nature of human motions in different environments. For training, recent deep learning-based prediction approaches mainly utilize information like trajectory history and interactions between pedestrians, among others. This can limit the prediction performance across various scenarios since the discrepancies between training datasets have not been properly incorporated. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposes a graph transformer structure to improve prediction performance, capturing the differences between the various sites and scenarios contained in the datasets. In particular, a self-attention mechanism and a domain adaption module have been designed to improve the generalization ability of the model. Moreover, an additional metric considering crossdataset sequences is introduced for training and performance evaluation purposes. The proposed framework is validated and compared against existing methods using popular public datasets, i.e., ETH and UCY. Experimental results demonstrate the improved performance of our proposed scheme. © 2024, CC BY.

Surgery is a medical treatment requiring specific manual procedures and instruments. Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgery for diagnosing and treating joint problems. The operation is performed by using special instruments and an arthroscope through incisions. This is involves complex manipulation that generally needs an assistant surgeon to hold the arthroscope. A vibration problem due to an unstable holding induces motion sickness of the lead surgeon. This research aims to design and construct a passive manipulator for holding an arthroscope during surgical operation. The designed passive manipulator consists of 7 degrees of freedom (DOF) with integrated electromagnetic brakes. A single switch is used to control the brakes, thus the surgeon can manipulate the arthroscope and fix its position and its orientation as needed. The provided range of motion of the designed device is verified by simulation that it is sufficient for knee arthroscopy and shoulder arthroscopy. The deflection due to the weight and loads is analyzed. The downward drift of the end effector is evaluated and the result is 3.90 mm which needs further improvement.
