Welcome to the proceedings of the 2006 International Conference on High- Performance Computing and Communications (HPCC 2006), which was held in Munich, Germany, September 13–15, 2006. This year’s conference marks the second edition of the HPCC conference series, and we are honored to serve as the Chairmen of this event with the guidance of the HPCC Steering Chairs, Beniamino Di Martino and Laurence T. Yang. Withthe rapidgrowthincomputingandcommunicationtechnology,thepast decadehas witnessed a proliferationof powerfulparallelanddistributed systems and an ever-increasing demand for the practice of high-performance computing and communication (HPCC). HPCC has moved into the mainstream of c- puting and has become a key technology in future research and development activities in many academic and industrial branches, especially when the so- tion of large and complex problems must cope with very tight time constraints. The HPCC 2006 conference provides a forum for engineers and scientists in academia, industry, and governmentto address all resulting profound challenges and to present and discuss their new ideas, research results, applications, and experience on all aspects of HPCC. There was a very large number of paper submissions (328), not only from Europe, but also from Asia and the Paci?c, and North and South America. This number of submissions represents a substantial increase of contributions compared to the ?rst year of HPCC, which clearly underlines the importance of this domain. AllsubmissionswerereviewedbyatleastthreeProgramCommitteemembers or external reviewers. It was extremely di?cult to select the presentations for theconferencebecausethereweresomanyexcellentandinterestingsubmissions.

In the recent years advancements in the development of Networked Virtual Environments (NVEs) can be observed in many domains. Although this technology is available, it is still a challenging task to design and produce these virtual worlds. To ease the creation of such environments the inVRs framework was developed. Besides this also grid environments have advanced from traditional batch processing systems in the area of scientific computation. Nowadays highly responsive and interactive grid jobs can be supported: Real-time Online Interactive Applications (ROIAs) constitute a potential domain. The edutain@grid middleware provides an approach to use the advantages of Grid technology, like Virtual Organisations (VOs), dynamic resource allocation, etc. and additionally fulfils the requirements of highly interactive real-time applications. The rtfOdrom application acts as a prototype application to demonstrate the interconnection between Grid computing and Virtual Reality. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009.

In recent years grid computing has evolved from simple batch processing systems to highly interactive applications. One approach heading in that direction is the edutain@grid project. This project aims to enable the computing power of current grid systems to the area of online computer games and e-learning applications. The shift from traditional scientific computing applications into the domain of business oriented applications has led to the involvement of a variety of actors. All of these organisations and persons have different needs considering the access to the system. To communicate with the edutain@grid system a novel combination of portals had to be developed. Three types of portals allow the stakeholders to get access to this system. These portals allow a unified and consistent interface approach hiding the complexity of traditional grid applications in order to support users from all different fields to work with edutain@grid in an intuitive way. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009.

Our basic aim is to design a framework that will define a unified way of cooperation between Grid visualization applications and visualization clients. Working with the Grid technology implies increased complexity on one hand, and user demands for high interactivity on the other. The duration of the computations in the Grid environment being exceedingly long, the user naturally wants to see the intermediate results and requires means to modify the running computations if the intermediate results are not satisfactory. Framework is building of lot of tools. This paper describes concrete only one of tool included in framework - 3D Geo-visualization tool for visualization of the running Grid applications to rendering their intermediate or final results in the client application.

The Message Passing Interface standard MPI offers collective communication routines to perform commonly required operations on groups of processes. The usage of these operations is highly recommended due to their simplified and compact interface and their optimized performance. This paper describes a pattern matching approach to detect clusters of point-to-point communication functions in program traces, which may resemble collective operations. The extracted information represents an important indicator for performance tuning, if point-to-point operations can be replaced by their collective counterparts. The paper describes the pattern matching and a series of measurements, which underline the feasibility of this idea. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

Summary form only given. GRIDs are large-scale distributed computing infrastructures that enable the integrated and collaborative use of high-end computers, networks, databases, and scientific instruments owned and managed by multiple organizations. Currently, a lot of national and international grid projects aim in building and using grids. One of them is the Austrian Grid. This project targets different areas of applications, including medical sciences, high-energy physics, applied numerical simulations, astrophysical simulations and solar observations, as well as meteorology and geophysics. Corresponding to the previous experience of the initiators of the project a lot of the applications are parallel ones. In the first part of the talk an overview on Austrian Grid will be presented. We will speak about the goals and the results in general. In the second part of the lecture the focus will be on parallel applications. We will discuss some answers given by the research of Austrian grid to questions like: how to map parallel applications onto a grid, which kind of tools are necessary, which extensions of standard middleware are desirable

This article describes an approach for predicting the run-time of jobs using a technique that works in three phases. Each one is independently adjusting to a user's behaviour in order to lead to accurate forecasts. In heterogeneous and distributed environments it is necessary to create schedules for utilizing the resources in an efficient way, but the generation of these schedules often poses a problem for a scheduler, as it has to incorporate several aspects like priorities, system load, Service Level Agreements. One possibility to support a scheduler in doing its work is to provide accurate predictions of the run-times of the submitted jobs.A large number of current techniques for run-time prediction offer statistical models - in the majority of cases linear ones - that are deployed on previously filtered data. As users have different jobs due to their field of work, and the attributes of their jobs differ, because of the different requirements they have, filtering data and choosing an appropriate method for a forecast has to cover these aspects. Motivated by this we propose an adaptive prediction system, where in each one of the phases we adjust our methodology on basis of the former behaviour of a user. This leads to a user specific clustering of data and to a flexible utilization of different prediction techniques in order to create a user-centred prediction model.

The message passing paradigm is the most frequently used approach to develop high-performancecomputing applications on paralleland distributed computing architectures. parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) and Message Passing Interface (MPI) are the two main representatives in this domain. This volume comprises 50 selected contributions presented at the 11th - ropean PVM/MPI Users’ Group Meeting, which was held in Budapest, H- gary, September 19–22, 2004. The conference was organized by the Laboratory of parallel and Distributed Systems (LPDS) at the Computer and Automation Research institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA SZTAKI). The conference was previously held in Venice, Italy (2003), Linz, Austria (2002), Santorini, Greece (2001), Balatonfu ¨red, Hungary (2000), Barcelona, Spain (1999), Liverpool, UK (1998), and Krakow,Poland (1997).The ?rst three conferences were devoted to PVM and were held in Munich, Germany (1996), Lyon, France (1995), and Rome, Italy (1994). In its eleventh year, this conference is well established as the forum for users and developers of PVM, MPI, and other messagepassing ***- tionsbetweenthesegroupshaveprovedtobeveryusefulfordevelopingnewideas in parallel computing, and for applying some of those already existent to new practical?*** meeting wereevaluationandperformance of PVM and MPI, extensions, implementations and improvements of PVM and MPI, parallel algorithms using the message passing paradigm, and parallel - plications in science and engineering. This paper shows the usage of the PAPS toolset for performance prediction on the nCUBE 2 multiprocessor system. Two Petri net models for communication on the nCUBE 2 with different levels of accuracy are developed and investigated. The representation of network contention within the Petri net models is validated for the message broadcast communication pattern. Parameter values for communication are determined for the nCUBE 2 machine. A parallel implementation of the Gaussian elimination algorithm is used to investigate the accuracy of the predicted absolute execution time depending on the choosen Petri net communication model. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1994.
