With the development of the modern technology, there is increasing a lot of important secret information to be protected. In this paper, an information security display system based on spatial psychovisual modulation (SPVM) is introduced on the android mobile platform. SPVM is a new way of information display technology which is conceived as an interplay of signal processing, optoeletronics and psychophysics. Nowadays modern displays support very high pixel density. Meanwhile the human visual system (HVS) cannot distinguish the image signals with spatial frequency more than a certain threshold. By this idea, we can design a new information security display system by utilizing the inconformity between HVS and the modern displays' resolutions. In this system, two type-s of viewers are defined, the first viewers wearing a pair of polarized glasses are authorized to see the secret information, however the second unauthorized naked-eye viewers without glasses can only see the disguise images. Thus, the differen-t contents on the same display can be seen through different viewing devices. What is more, the increasing stereoscopic display technologies drive amounts of polarization based s-patial multiplexing available. So we choose the polarization based stereoscopic screen as the display in this information security display system. The information security display system, as a guidance and concrete implementation of SPVM, attains remarkable performance in our experiments.

This live demonstration presents a new screen piracy protection technology by using “saturation laser attack” and temporal psychovisual modulation(TPVM). “Saturation laser attack” is using lasers to emit beams of colored light into the camera, so that the camera is saturated and instantly blind. TPVM is a new information display technology using the interplay of signal processing, optoelectronics and psychophysics and provides a solution for information security. Using the TPVM technique, we are able to show the disguise information on the screen while authorized viewers can truly see the secret information. An automatic target recognition algorithm is used to locate the position of the target mobile phone, then the device sends out lasers to the target phone to defeat unauthorized recording screens. By combining laser attack and TPVM, the whole system can prevent disclosure of confidential and personal information through unauthorized recording screens effectively.

Nowadays visual attention has been applied to many research and application problems. Different algorithms from low level to high level have been developed to detect the saliency map. For images with human face, high-level factors like mole may influence the visual attention. To investigate visual attention on human face with mole, we construct a Visual Attention database for Faces with Mole (VAFM) that contains face images, fixation density maps (FDM), landmark points as well as eye tracking data. Then we build visual attention model for face images with mole combining low-level saliency algorithms and high-level feature. Compared with the traditional low-level saliency algorithms, the proposed model perform better on our dataset.

IR imaging is playing an important role in industry these days. However, the IR cameras only support low resolution for technical reasons. In this paper, we propose to use the visible camera as a guidance to super resolution the IR images. We setup a prototype of the IR-Color multi-sensor imaging system and construct a dataset including videos collected from different scenes for further research. Then we present our color guided algorithm which is suitable for this kind of super resolution problem. We test our algorithm on our dataset. The experiment results indicate that our algorithm performs well, and avoids the over-texture problems that traditional solutions suffer from. In further work, we will apply our multi-sensor system to more applications in computer vision.

Candidate text region extraction plays a critical role in convolutional neural network (CNN) based text detection from natural images. In this paper, we propose a CNN based scene text detection algorithm with a new text region extractor. The so called candidate text region extractor I-MSER is based on Maximally Stable Extremal Region (MSER), which can improve the independency and completeness of the extracted candidate text regions. Design of I-MSER is motivated by the observation that text MSERs have high similarity and are close to each other. The independency of candidate text regions obtained by I-MSER is guaranteed by selecting the most representative regions from a MSER tree which is generated according to the spatial overlapping relationship among the MSERs. A multi-layer CNN model is trained to score the confidence value of the extracted regions extracted by the I-MSER for text detection. The new text detection algorithm based on I-MSER is evaluated with wide-used ICDAR 2011 and 2013 datasets and shows improved detection performance compared to the existing algorithms.

Since the purpose of objective image quality assessment is to be consistent with subjective image quality assessment as highly as possible, the understanding of the mechanisms of human visual system will certainly benefit the study of objective image quality assessment. Recent developments in brain theory and neuroscience, particularly the free-energy principle, account for the perception and understanding of visual scenes. As the free-energy principle conjectures, the brain tries to generate the corresponding prediction for its encountered scene by an internal generative model. On the other hand, sparse representation is evidenced to resemble the neural response properties of simple cells in the primary visual cortex. Conjunctively, in this paper, we suppose the prediction manner of the internal generative model in free-energy principle follows sparse representation and propose an image quality metric accordingly. Experiments on LIVE, TID2008 and CSIQ image databases demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed image quality metric. Noteworthily, our metric needs little information (only a single scalar) of the reference image and is training-free.

Compared to H.264/AVC, High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) aims to deliver the same video quality at half the bit rate. However, it imposes enormous computational complexity because of taking advantage of a more adaptive quad-tree structure, rate distortion optimization (RDO) and etc. In this paper, a fast decision method is proposed to reduce HEVC encoder complexity of B frames which avoids unnecessary mode decision and rate distortion optimization (RDO). It is found that there exist strong correlations between PU modes, depth distribution and SKIP/Merge RD cost. We statistically analyze the prediction mode distribution according to SKIP/Merge RD cost of current CU depth and depth distribution according to SKIP/Merge RD cost of 64×64 and 32×32 CUs. Based on the analysis results, the proposed algorithm includes an early detection of SKIP mode and a depth pruning to skip searching for 8×8 and 16×16 CUs. This algorithm enables us to skip unnecessary RDO by early termination of mode decisions in CUs. Experimental results show that the encoding complexity can be reduced by 50% on average with only 1.25% BD-rate increase compared to the HEVC test model (HM) 12.0 reference software. © 2015 Taylor & Francis Group.

In Hwang and Peli (2014), few errors occurred in computing the angular disparities. The direction of peripheral depth distortion (the angular disparity differences between what it is in real-world 3D viewing and S3D viewing) is reversed when the computational errors were corrected, making the perception of the peripheral depth to be expanded, not compressed. This reply points to the error and provides the corrected figures. Correcting these errors does not affect the general conclusion that S3D viewed on single screen display induces peripheral depth distortion which may be a cause of visually induced motion sickness.

In this paper, we propose a reduced-reference scheme for evaluating the quality of blurred images under the theory of free-energy principle. Specifically, the free-energy principle indicates that the brain tries to account for the input image with an internal generative model and the discrepancy between the image and its model-explained version, which can be measured by free energy, is related to the image's perceptual quality. Accordingly, we define a visual distance between the blurred image and its original image in free energy to evaluate the quality of the blurred image. Therefore, the proposed quality scheme belongs to reduced-reference methods, which needs some information from the original image for quality assessment. Experimental results on public databases, LIVE, TID2013 and C-SIQ, demonstrate the proposed method works in high consistency with subjective assessment results and outperforms representative image quality assessment approaches.

image super resolution (SR) based on self-similarity has achieved impressive results by exploiting the local similarity across various scaled images. However, it is time consuming and far from meeting practical applications' requirements and it is prone to unnatural visual artifacts such as facets and enhanced noise. In this paper, with the powerful general purposeGPU, an accelerated parallel implementation based on NVIDIA CUDA architecture has been proposed. Then denoising is combined and implemented together during the SR processing using the patch matching information of similarity, and it makes the images clearer and cleaner. Also, subpixel accuracy of interpolation and searching is applied to improve the similarity matching process, which make the upscaled images more natural-looking. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves an impressive speedup rate and produces improved visual quality images in comparison with other state-of-the-art SR.
