Foreground and background are treated without distinction at classification stage in most background subtraction algorithms. However, correct classification of foreground is the primary requirement, and thus misclassification costs of the t-wo classes should be different. Based on this fact, we present a new method to introduce cost sensitivity into background subtraction, where a cost matrix is created to represent the costs of misclassification. Some items in the cost matrix are not constants, but functions of foreground occurence at each pixel location. By the use of such non-constant costs, detection rate of foreground is improved while increase of false alarms is prevented at the same time. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

This paper proposes a new affine registration algorithm for 2D point matching. It is a two-step iterative registration algorithm by soft weight assignment based on bidirectional distance. At each iteration, the affine transformation is updated by two optimization steps, in which the model data and the test data are matched from each other respectively. By the optimization of registration at separate steps during each iteration, the proposed algorithm can provide a good estimate of the accurate affine transformation in condition of poor initialization and lack of geometric assumptions on point sets. Some experiments about comparison with the current state-of-the art approaches, demonstrate the robustness and accuracy of our method.

A New Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery System:WATO

Background:The traditional manual orthopaedic technology heavily relies on a surgeon's experience,so it certainly increases the instability of the ***,computer assisted orthopaedic surgery(CAOS) is becoming a hot research topic for its high accuracy and *** developed a new CAOS system WATO,which is mainly designed for total knee replacement(TKR).Methods:WATO system provides the interactive software for a surgeon's preoperative *** on its two infrared cameras,infrared markers and infrared probe,WATO system gives a simple surgical positioning procedure of femur and tibia without additional surgery for the placement of fiducial *** to the reference alignment axis from positioning procedure,a surgeon can move the robot of WATO system to do accurate bone *** checking is also considered in WATO ***:Extensive experiments were conducted on phantoms and cadaver bones to verify the accuracy and stability of WATO *** results showed that TKR using WATO system had better performance compared with traditional and navigated ***:WATO system shows its superiority in TKR,and has a broad application prospect in the *** will develop its new functions for other orthopaedic surgery such as total hip replacement(THR).Current disadvantages such as bigger skin incision have to be resolved in the future.

Orientation field is one of the intrinsic charac-teristics of fingerprints, and it plays very important role in many processing phases of fingerprint recognition such as enhancement, minutiae extraction and matching. Therefore, accurate estimation of orientation filed is much necessary. In this paper, a novel PDE-based method is proposed for regularization of orientation field for low-quality fingerprint images. The method consists of four steps. Firstly, the coarse orientation field is computed using traditional gradient-based approach. Secondly, the reliability map of the orientation field is computed based on a procedure of multiscale coherence analysis. Then the orientation in the low-reliable region is reconstructed with the surrounding data by means of image inpainting technique. Finally, nonlinear diffusion filtering with adaptive diffusivity is performed on the whole orientation field. Experiments on the NIST SD4 fingerprint database indicated that the proposed algorithm is capable to estimate the orien-tation field accurately, especially for poor-quality fingerprints, and it can be integrated into fingerprint recognition systems to improve the performance.

In recent years, the subspace learning methods based on the bidirectional two-dimensional are widely used in extracting features of face image. However, the existing bidirectional two-dimensional subspace learning methods always assume that the numbers of two mapping matrices' projection vectors are equal. Although this can simplify the computation, it will possibly cause the following two questions: (1) Get rid of information with classification properties;(2) Reserve information without classification properties. In order to solve the problem, this paper proposes a method called Divisor method and use it in bidirectional two-dimensional subspace learning method. This method calculates the percentage loss of mapping matrix in both row and column directions firstly, and then use the Divisor method to select the numbers of two mapping matrices' projection vectors, which base on the principle of minimum total percentage loss. The experimental results on ORL and YALE face database show that the proposed method yields greater recognition accuracy while reduces the overall computational complexity. © 2012 IEEE.

Non-photorealistic rendering (NPR) such as stylization has received much concern in area of computer graphics and image processing. In this paper, a simple and effective method is proposed for streamline stylization. Through a kind of sequential filters, the method performs a series of operations, including detail removal, region smoothing, structure enhancement, and edge sharpen, to transform common pictures into Impressionist oil-painting like images with streamline style. Experimental results on a gallery of images demonstrate that our method can render images in good NPR style impressively and provide encouraging visual effects. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, we present a novel viewpoint of treating conks-based calibration as the algebraic and geometric constraints. From this viewpoint, we use four intersection points correspondence to conduct a unified algebraic constraint of Principal-Axes Aligned (PAA) conies which is a necessary and sufficient condition to recover the 2D Euclidean structure (ES). Under this unified constraint, we can establish the link to other existing approaches (such as concentric circles, confocal conies) and find some novel patterns. Meanwhile, the geometric interpretation that the quadrangle formed by PAA conies is actually a rectangle with one degree of freedom is shown. Then a framework is introduced to deal with various situations of PAA conies. Finally, we propose an optimization procedure to estimate the lens distortion which is discarded by previous methods. The experiments with linear method and optimization method show the good performance of our camera calibration algorithms. © 2012 IEEE.

We propose a new method for human action recognition based on multiple features and a hybrid generative/discriminative model. Specifically, we propose a new action representation based on computing a rich set of descriptors from Affine-SIFT key point trajectories. A new hybrid generative/discriminative approach based on support vector machine and topic model is proposed using Fisher kernel method for action recognition. Fisher score for the topic model is evaluated by the variational inference algorithm. To obtain efficient and compact representations for actions, we develop a feature fusion method to combine spatial-temporal local motion descriptors and demonstrate how this kernel framework can be used to combine different types of features and models into a single classier. Our experiments, conducted on a number of popular datasets, show performance improvements over the corresponding generative approach and are competitive with the best results reported in the literature. © 2012 SPIE and IS&T.

A Novel Wideband CPW-Fed 5.8GHz RFID Tag Antenna

A novel wideband 5.8GHz CPW-fed an- tenna is presented for Radio frequency identification (RFID) tag. Four U-shaped and four L-shaped branches are used as additional resonators to achieve wideband operation. The proposed antenna was analyzed numeri- cally using the Method of moment (MOM) and the Fi- nite element method (FEM). With the antenna size lim- ited to 30 × 30mm2, the ?10dB bandwidth obtained by MOM is 3.235GHz (5.765～9GHz) and the ?9.5dB band- width obtained by FEM is 2.74GHz (5.32～8.06GHz), cor- responding to 55.7% and 47.2% of the center frequency 5.8GHz respectively. Moreover, the simulated results show that the proposed antenna has gain of more than 4.8dBi and the radiation pattern is nearly omnidirectional in the H-plane. The measured ?10dB bandwidth is 2.68GHz (5.63GHz～8.31GHz), 46.2% of the 5.8GHz frequency. Fur- thermore, there are three measured resonant frequencies at 1.34GHz, 3.23GHz and 5.8GHz with lower than ?10dB return loss respectively. The measurement result achieves a wideband RFID tag antenna performance and is in good agreement with the calculated results.

We study the task of interactive semantic labeling of a segmentation hierarchy. To this end we propose a framework interleaving two components: an automatic labeling step, based on a Conditional Random Field whose dependencies are defined by the inclusion tree of the segmentation hierarchy, and an interaction step that integrates incremental input from a human user. Evaluated on two distinct datasets, the proposed interactive approach efficiently integrates human interventions and illustrates the advantages of structured prediction in an interactive framework. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
