This paper discusses centerline extraction algorithms for virtual cardiovascular endoscopy system. A fully automatic extraction method is proposed which is significantly enhanced from current distance mapping method. The new approach consists of four steps: preprocessing; construction of improved Distance From Boundary field; centerline extraction; mean value smoothing of centerline. Based on the proposed automatic approach, an interactive extraction method is presented in which a centerline connects specified points selected by cardiologists. This interactive approach makes the viewport closer to pathological changes in the aorta and human heart, so cardiologists can observe focuses more clearly. The two algorithms have been applied to the virtual cardiovascular endoscopy system, and the experiments prove that our methods work well in the process of auxiliary diagnosis.

This paper discusses the use of topological image analysis to derive characteristics needed in plant phenotyping. Due to certain features of root systems (deformation over time, overlaps of branches in a 2D image of the root system) a topological analysis is needed to correctly derive these characteristics. The advantages of such a topological analysis are highlighted in this paper and root phenotyping is presented as a new application for computational topology. Characteristics used in plant phenotyping that can be derived from root images using methods of topological image analysis are further presented. A Reeb graph based representation of root images is shown as an example for such a topological analysis. Based on a graph representation a new, normalised representation of root images is introduced.

In this paper, we introduce a novel class of coplanar conics, the pencil of which can doubly contact to calibrate camera and estimate pose. We first analyze the properties of con-axes and con-eccentricity ellipses, which consist of a naturM extending pattern of concentric circles. Then the general case that two ellipses have two repeated complex intersection points is presented. This degenerate configuration results in a one-parameter family of homographies which map the planar pattern to its image. Although it is unable to compute the complete homography, an indirect 3-degree polynomial or 5-degree polynomial constraint on intrinsic parameters from one image can also be used for camera calibration and pose estimation under the minimal conditions. Furthermore, this nonlinear problem can be treated as a polynomial optimization problem (POP) and the global optimization solution can be also obtained by using SparsePOP (a sparse semidefinite programming relaxation of POPs), Finally, the experiments with simulated data and real images are shown to verify the correctness and robustness of the proposed technique.

Point matching is an important component of image registration. Recent years, Coherent Point Drift (CPD) method becomes a very popular point matching approach. CPD treats point matching as a probability estimation problem and speeds up the process of matching a lot. In this method, one set of points are thought to be sampled from a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM), which is centered by the other set of points. However, CPD is sensitive to outliers and noises, especially when the noise ratio increased or the number of outliers gets much high. To deal with this problem, we introduce shape context into the step of searching for matching points and then improve the form of prior probabilities of GMM in this paper. The main idea of our method is that if the most points in a data set are likely to be matched to a particular centroid, this Gaussian component should be have a more influence to GMM. Therefore, we set prior probability of GMM with the similarity between GMM components and the data set. And the computation of similarity is based on shape context. The experiments on 2D and 3D images show that when noise ratio is low, our method performs as well as CPD does, but as the ratio increased, our method is more robust and satisfactory than CPD.

Many existing methods for salient object detection are performed by over-segmenting images into non-overlapping regions, which facilitate local/global color statistics for saliency computation. In this paper, we propose a new approach: spectral salient object detection, which is benefited from selected attributes of normalized cut, enabling better retaining of holistic salient objects as comparing to conventionally employed pre-segmentation techniques. The proposed saliency detection method recursively bi-partitions regions that render the lowest cut cost in each iteration, resulting in binary spanning tree structure. Each segmented region is then evaluated under criterion that fit Gestalt laws and statistical prior. Final result is obtained by integrating multiple intermediate saliency maps. Experimental results on three benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method against 13 state-of-the-art approaches to salient object detection.

Recently many graph-based salient region/object detection methods have been developed. They are rather effective for still images. However, little attention has been paid to salient region detection in videos. This paper addresses salient region detection in videos. A unified approach towards graph construction for salient object detection in videos is proposed. The proposed method combines static appearance and motion cues to construct graph, enabling a direct extension of original graph-based salient region detection to video processing. To maintain coherence in both intra- and inter-frames, a spatial-temporal smoothing operation is proposed on a structured graph derived from consecutive frames. The effectiveness of the proposed method is tested and validated using seven videos from two video datasets.

In this paper, we investigate the efficiency and scalability of Gaussian mixture model based learning algorithm for the detection of Near-Earth objects in large scale astronomy image data. We propose an effective scheme to reduce the computational complexity of current learning algorithm, this is achieved by adopting the perceptual image hashing method. Our proposed scheme is validated on raw astronomy image data. The experiment results illustrate that both efficiency and scalability are improved significantly in astronomical scenario and other scenario.
