Progressive Motion Boosting for Video Frame Interpolation

Video frame interpolation has made great progress in estimating advanced optical flow and synthesizing in-between frames sequentially. However, frame interpolation involving various resolutions and motions remains challenging due to limited or fixed pre-trained networks. Inspired by the success of the coarse-to-fine scheme for video frame interpolation, i.e., gradually interpolating frames of different resolutions, we propose a progressive boosting network (ProBoost-Net) based on a multi-scale framework to achieve flexible recurrent scales and then gradually optimize optical flow estimation and frame interpolation. Specifically, we designed a dense motion boosting (DMB) module to transfer features close to real motion to the decoded features from the later scales, which provides complementary information to refine the motion further. Furthermore, to ensure the accuracy of the estimated motion features at each scale, we propose a motion adaptive fusion (MAF) module that adaptively deals with motions with different receptive fields according to the motion conditions. Thanks to the framework’s flexible recurrent scales, we can customize the number of scales and make trade-offs between computation and quality depending on the application scenario. Extensive experiments with various datasets demonstrated the superiority of our proposed method over state-of-the-art approaches in various scenarios. © 2023 institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. In the digital era, multidimensional social networks have become integral to daily communication, catering to diverse relational needs, from interpersonal to professional and commercial. This study utilizes two comprehensive datasets from Twitter to explore and visualize user interactions within these networks. Focusing on advanced community detection algorithms, we apply the Louvain and Label Propagation methods to delineate the structure of these communities and identify influential users effectively. Through systematic analysis, our research reveals significant insights into the dynamics of network clusters and the pivotal role of influencers. We demonstrate that community structures significantly influence in formation dissemination and user engagement, providing key data to optimize digital communication strategies in complex environments. The findings underscore the importance of strategic influencer engagement and tailored community management in enhancing interaction within multidimensional social networks. Additionally, our results suggest that understanding the network's structural nuances can aid in developing targeted interventions that leverage influencer capabilities to maximize communication impact, illustrating potential applications across various sectors, including marketing, politics, and public health. © 2024 IEEE.

Named Data Networking as an alternative network for 5G network traffic is required to be able to provide better performance compared to other networks such as internet protocol networks. In NDN wireless, it is known that there is producer mobility and consumer mobility, so optimal mobility management is needed, including the handover process. In this paper the author proposes a simple RSSI-based 5G handover algorithm with distance as a reference RSSI value. This algorithm is a preparation for the handover algorithm on the NDN wireless network. By using the assumed distance value MS to eNB as the basic value for calculating RSSI, handover determination is determined by comparing the RSSI value to the RSSI threshold value. With the scenario of different numbers of users and cluster sizes, from the handover process involving 8 eNB. It can be calculated how big the handover probability is for each user. From the simulation results, it can be concluded that the more users and the larger the cluster size, the greater the handover probability value. This is linear, with the wider the cluster, the probability of getting an RSSI signal from the original eNB becomes smaller, making it possible to get an RSSI signal from neighboring eNB, so that a handover occurs. © 2024 IEEE.

Breast cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women globally, underscoring the critical need for early detection and accurate diagnosis. Ultrasound imaging serves as a non-invasive diagnostic tool for identifying breast abnormalities, yet the complexity of these images presents significant interpretation challenges. This study explores the application of Machine Learning (ML) models, specifically Decision Tree (DT) and Random Forest (RF) classifiers, for the classification of breast cancer ultrasound images into benign, malignant, and normal categories. Data augmentation techniques are employed to address class imbalance and enhance model generalization using the Breast Cancer Ultrasonic Image dataset. Among preprocessing steps, pixel values were normalized to provide a consistent input for the models. RF model performed better than DT with an accuracy of 88.75% against an accuracy of 86.25% and those masks for ultrasound images contribute a lot to the overall classification accuracy. In summary, the results of our study can provide support for grand challenges in health and emphasize implications such as the potentiality of ML models to advance breast cancer diagnosis and it implies a necessity for an even further expansion that will allow complete patient outcomes optimization. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper forecasts the microeconomic level household expenditures using a novel hybrid deep learning approach. In terms of research significance, household finance control has a major influence on the finance system within the economy. Accurate forecasting of household finances assists in maintaining positive financial behavior among individuals and the economy. The DeepBoost multi-output regressor proposed in this paper is based on the 1D CNN-ANN and the XGBoost. The proposed model in this paper is compared with the R 2 , MSE, and MAE since it’s a regression problem. The experimental results reveal that the proposed DeepBoost multi-output regressor has the best application in forecasting the multiple expenditures of households by outperforming the ANN, 1D CNN-ANN, and Random Forest Regressor models. The proposed DeepBoost multi-output regressor evaluated the housing, food, transportation, healthcare, other necessities, childcare, and tax expenditures that had 0.94, 0.98, 0.83, 0.94, 0.97, 0.97, and 0.99 values for the R 2 , 9037.71, 2692.12, 9788, 15077.33, 1373.93, 13629.36, and 1904.52 values for the MSE, and 66.07, 34.05, 73.17, 87.05, 26.25, 78.74, and 29.47 MAE values than the ANN, RFR, and 1D CNN-ANN models.

The most popular tools for predicting pathogenicity of single amino acid variants (SAVs) were developed based on sequence-based techniques. SAVs may change protein structure and function. In the context of van der Waals force and disulfide bridge calculations, no method directly predicts the impact of mutations on the energies of the protein structure. Here, we combined machine learning methods and energy scores of protein structures calculated by Rosetta Energy Function 2015 to predict SAV pathogenicity. The accuracy level of our model (0.76) is higher than that of six prediction tools. Further analyses revealed that the differential reference energies, attractive energies, and solvation of polar atoms between wildtype and mutant side-chains played essential roles in distinguishing benign from pathogenic variants. These features indicated the physicochemical properties of amino acids, which were observed in 3D structures instead of sequences. We added 16 features to Rhapsody (the prediction tool we used for our data set) and consequently improved its performance. The results indicated that these energy scores were more appropriate and more detailed representations of the pathogenicity of SAVs. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

The emergence of large-scale computing paradigms required the evolution of software development methods, moreover, the need to effectively transform traditionally sequential applications into parallelizable and scalable architectures. This transformation is key in harnessing the computing power of modern multicore and distributed systems. Python, with its vast ecosystem and simplicity, is becoming a powerful language that facilitates this transition. This article discusses the methodologies and development of a Python preprocessor tool aimed at converting sequential applications into forms suitable for large-scale computing environments. Through detailed analysis and implementation, we demonstrate the use of Spark functions and third-party libraries to automate this transition, making large-scale computing more accessible to a wider range of applications and developers. The tool includes a set of rules that identify different patterns of code input (for example, list-sequential looping) and transform consistent code. This article introduces a Python preprocessor designed to automate the transformation of sequential Python applications into ones that harness the power of large-scale computing environments. © 2024 IEEE.

We present the non-FIFO time-dependent graph model with REalistic vehicle eXchange times (REX) for schedule-based multimodal public transport, along with a novel query algorithm called TRIP-based LAbel-correction propagation (TRIPLA) algorithm that efficiently solves the realistic earliest-arrival routing problem. The REX model possesses all strong features of previous time-dependent graph models without suffering from their deficiencies. It handles non-negligible exchanges from one vehicle to another, as well as supports non-FIFO instances which are typical in public transport, without compromising space efficiency. We conduct a thorough experimental evaluation with real-world data which demonstrates that TRIPLA significantly outperforms all state-of-the-art query algorithms for multimodal earliest-arrival routing in schedule-based public transport. © Spyros Kontogiannis, Paraskevi-Maria-Malevi Machaira, Andreas Paraskevopoulos, and Christos Zaroliagis.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a well-known modality in neuroscience and is widely used in identifying and classifying neurological disorders. This paper investigates how EEG data can be used along with knowledge distillation-based deep learning models to detect mental disorders like epilepsy and sleep disorders. The EEG signals are converted into time–frequency plots using short-time Fourier transforms. Further, we propose a novel methodology for using knowledge distillation-based transfer learning (KDTL). Knowledge distillation is becoming quite prevalent in the machine learning field and is associated with various applications in our work;we propose its use in the detection of mental disorders from EEG spectrograms. We convert the EEGs using short-term Fourier transform to obtain time–frequency representation and apply teacher-student by first training a large teacher model and use knowledge distillation to train a student model. In our experiments, we found that ConvNext teacher and MobileNet student combination obtained better results. Our proposed KDTL approach is tested on two datasets with multiple cases, namely the Bonn and ISRUC datasets and obtain 98% and 95% accuracies, respectively. Further experimental results show that the overall KDTL methodology can obtain high classification accuracy across both datasets in binary and multiclass classifications and proves to be better than multiple prior works. Further, our KDTL approach provides a way to train lightweight models which have a smaller number of trainable parameters and thereby constitute lower training time overall. Our proposed KDTL-based approach obtained accurate results in diagnosing mental disorders from EEG spectrograms. Compared to other related methods, KDTL outperformed across tasks with obtained good results in both binary and multiclass classifications. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.
