Mission/safety-critical applications rely on the dependability of their semiconductor control systems. The lockstepping is state-of-the-art when it comes to their protection. This paper compares the dual/triple lockstep systems with the Hardisc, which features microarchitecture-level protection. For a fair comparison, each system is based on the same architecture and integrates protection against bit-flips in memory and transient faults in the bus. We analyse how individual structures of the system affect the vulnerability of a system to faults. Our fault injection methodology combines pre-synthesis simulation with synthesis data to scale the fault rate of the structures according to their size. The results show that the Hardisc can withstand fault rates orders of magnitude higher than the dual-core lockstep system while preserving the same area and power consumption. It comes with a 5% frequency penalty. The pipeline logic has the most significant impact on the vulnerability of the lockstep system. On the other hand, the ECC-protected register file constraints the maximum failure rate the Hardisc can withstand due to fault accumulation during specific program sections.

Fast reroute (FRR) mechanisms that can instantly handle network failures in the data plane are gaining attention in packet-switched networks. In FRR no notification messages are required as the nodes adjacent to the failure are prepared with a routing table such that the packets are re-routed only based on local information. However, designing the routing algorithm for FRR is challenging because the number of possible sets of failed network links and nodes can be extremely high, while the algorithm should keep track of which nodes are aware of the failure. In this paper, we propose a generic algorithmic framework that combines the benefits of Integer Linear Programming (ILP) and an effective approach from graph theory related to constructive graph characterization of k-connected graphs, i.e., edge splitting-off. We illustrate these benefits through arborescence design for FRR and show that (i) due to the ILP we have great flexibility in defining the routing problem, while (ii) the problem can still be solved very fast. We demonstrate through simulations that our framework outperforms state-of-the-art FRR mechanisms and provides better resilience with shorter paths in the arborescences. © 2023 IEEE.

Blockchain introduction has made a revolutionary change in the crypto currency around the world but it has not delivered on its promises of free and faster transaction confirmation. Serguei Popov's proposal of using tangles, a directed acyclic graph, which essentially is considered to be the successor of blockchains and offers the required features like machine to machine micro payment and fee-less transaction. It requires the user to approve the previous two transactions in the web to participate in the network. This essentially eliminates the miners and the mining part form the currency exchange and provides the user or participants to do their transactions fee-less. Since the participant verifies the previous two transactions it also contributes to the security of the tangle. In this paper, features of internet of things application (IOTA) and all the improvements in it using tangles are discussed along with how it contributed to the security and how it enables the participants to have fee-less transactions is also discussed. Spatial modulation (SM) is a low-complexity multiple-input/multiple-output transmission technique that combines index modulation and quadrature amplitude modulation for wireless communications. In this work, we consider the problem of link adaption for generalized spatial modulation (GSM) systems that use multiple active transmit antennas simultaneously. Link adaption algorithms require a real-time estimation of the link quality of the time-variant communication channels, e.g., by means of estimating the mutual information. However, determining the mutual information of SM is challenging because no closed-form expressions have been found so far. Recently, multilayer feedforward neural networks were applied to compute the achievable rate of an index modulation link. However, only a small SM system with two transmit and two receive antennas was considered. In this work, we consider a similar approach but investigate larger GSM systems with multiple active antennas. We analyze the portions of mutual information related to antenna selection and the IQ modulation processes, which depend on the GSM variant and the signal constellation. © VDE VERLAG GMBH · Berlin · Offenbach.

The Internet of Things (IoT) can potentially change how humans interact with the environment. This technology is able to be applied in various fields, such as urban management, agriculture, environmental monitoring, health, and transportation. Conventional air quality monitoring systems are complex sensing equipment and they can measure various parameters of air pollutants. This system requires very high costs and maintenance. Therefore, a low-cost air quality measurement system is required and is able to measure the surrounding air pollutants. By using wireless sensor network technology as the acquisition of environmental monitoring sensor data. A system design was created in the form of geographic information capable of describing air quality in a particular area. The air parameters used are carbon monoxide, dust particulate, light intensity, temperature, and relative humidity. The wireless network uses the LoRa module connected to the gateway. The web server provides a database and geographic information system interface from the gateway through the MQTT broker. Data transmission using a radio frequency of 915 Mhz and able to send data sensors from various points. Outdoor testing at many buildings is capable of transmitting sensor data with a packet loss of 0% at a distance of fewer than 111 meters and the largest packet loss of 51.28% at a distance of 442 meters. © 2023 IEEE.

In response to the escalating demand for electricity, the aging process and inherent failures in power lines have become unavoidable challenges in their operational integrity. This research addresses the imperative need for a robust method to detect damage in power insulator disc images, introducing a novel feature extraction technique grounded in color intensity profile transformation and ensemble learning. For the purposes of the research, a specific dataset was developed based on publicly available images of power insulators. The collection consists of 9232 images of insulator discs which included 2184 images of damaged discs. The discernible damages include breakages and burnouts. Two distinct analysis variants were employed. In the first variant (V1), two classification groups were selected: disc with damages and disc without damages. In the second variant (V2), three classification groups were selected: discs without damage, broken discs, and burnout discs. The described research was divided into two successive stages. In the first of them (S1), the transformed color intensity profiles for the prepared data set were built and various machine learning models for their classification were trained and evaluated. In the next stage (S2), previously developed, highest efficient machine learning models, were used to make the detection of various damaged types of overhead line insulator discs. For the first stage of research high-performance results and a high value of the F1 score parameters were obtained (F1 score = 0.999 for the first variant (S1V1) and F1 score = 0.992 for the second variant (S1V2). In the second stage of research and the first variant (S2V1), the highest result of the F1 score was 0.932 and for the second variant (S2V2) F1 score was 0.930. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Indonesia has been participating at the International Olympiad in informatics (IOI) since 1995. The process of selecting the four contestants remains unchanged. All medalists in the national level competition were invited to take a series of training camps to select competitively the candidates. In the first two decades of participation in IOI, Indonesia have collected two gold medals, and these surprising achievements were merely more because of luck, and not as a result of a reliable training/selection process. We believe reliable and good training is a basis to predict and expect a stable achievement. Through careful observations and reflections, a change of course of action is needed to bring Indonesia’s achievement to the next level. This paper shares Indonesia’s experience in changing and implementing strategies during the national training camps to better prepare the four contestants to IOI. What are the changes taken by the coaching team that have been exercised that made it possible for Indonesia to achieve three gold in the last four consecutive years? © 2023 IOI, Vilnius University.

The discovery and reutilization of scientific codes are crucial in many research activities. Computational notebooks have emerged as a particularly effective medium for sharing and reusing scientific codes. Nevertheless, effectively locating relevant computational notebooks is a significant challenge. First, computational notebooks encompass multi-modal data comprising unstructured text, source code, and other media, posing complexities in representing such data for retrieval purposes. Second, the absence of evaluation datasets for the computational notebook search task hampers fair performance assessments within the research community. Prior studies have either treated computational notebook search as a code-snippet search problem or focused solely on content-based approaches for searching computational notebooks. To address the aforementioned difficulties, we present DeCNR, tackling the information needs of researchers in seeking computational notebooks. Our approach leverages a fused sparse-dense retrieval model to represent computational notebooks effectively. Additionally, we construct an evaluation dataset including actual scientific queries, computational notebooks, and relevance judgments for fair and objective performance assessment. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method surpasses baseline approaches in terms of F1@5 and NDCG@5. The proposed system has been implemented as a web service shipped with REST APIs, allowing seamless integration with other applications and web services. © 2023 IEEE.

This research paper presents a study for identifying user anomalies in large datasets of web server requests. Using a cybersecurity company's network of web servers as a case study, we propose a technique for analyzing user activity in NGINX logs. The proposed method does not require a labeled dataset and is capable of efficiently identifying different user anomalies in large datasets with millions of daily requests. The results of the analysis provided a deeper understanding of user behavior when seeking updates through web requests and aided in interpreting the findings. Clustering the anomalies helped to produce typical clusters and further supported the interpretation of the results. This work provides valuable insights into user behavior in web server networks and highlights the importance of efficient anomaly detection techniques in large datasets. The findings have potential real-world applications in the field of cybersecurity, particularly in providing network security analysts with an automated and more objective approach to threat analysis. This study showcases the importance of automated methods for analyzing user activity in web server networks and provides a more objective and efficient approach to detecting user anomalies in large datasets. This approach contributes to the development of more effective and precise cybersecurity systems, ultimately improving the protection of network infrastructures from malicious attacks.

In efforts to enhance face recognition performance, techniques ranging from super-resolution methods to the use of Local Binary Pattern (LBP) and deep learning have been explored. Among these, the pseudorandom pixel placement (PSE) technique has demonstrated potential in face recognition. Nevertheless, its testing was previously limited to just 8 subjects. This study undertakes a comprehensive evaluation of the PSE technique with a larger sample, utilizing 2000 subjects from the DigiFACE1M dataset and leveraging the state-of-the-art VGG-Face deep learning model. Through experiments involving 10 different PSE patterns on 144.000 face images, our findings indicate that, compared to Regular Pixel Placement (REG), PSE achieved an improvement in average accuracy by 1.05%, reduced the standard deviation by 1.47%, and resulted in 31 additional subjects achieving 100% accuracy. We conclude that PSE consistently outperforms REG in face recognition tasks using the VGG-Face model across the majority of tested scenarios. © 2024 SPIE. All rights reserved.
