As contemporary quantum computers do not possess error correction, any calculation performed by these devices can be considered an involuntary approximation. To solve a problem on a quantum annealer, it has to be expressed as an instance of Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO). In this work, we thus study whether systematically approximating QUBO representations of the MAX-3SAT problem can improve the solution quality when solved on contemporary quantum hardware, compared to using exact, non-approximated QUBO representations. For a MAX-3SAT instance consisting of a 3SAT formula with $n$ variables and $m$ clauses, we propose a method of systematically creating approximate QUBO representations of dimension $(n\times n)$ , which is significantly smaller than the QUBO matrices of any exact, non-approximated MAX-3SAT QUBO transformation. In an empirical evaluation, we demonstrate that using our QUBO approximations for solving MAX-3SAT problems on D-Wave's quantum annealer Advantage_System6.4 can yield better results than using state-of-the-art exact QUBO transformations. Furthermore, we demonstrate that using naive QUBO approximation methods, based on removing values from exact $(n+m)\times(n+m)-\mathbf{dimensional}$ QUBO representations of MAX-3SAT instances, is ineffective.

Named Data Networking (NDN) is a newly developing networking method that focuses on information, compared to TCP/IP, which focuses on hosts. This study proposed a solution to the growing complexity of computer networks. The fundamental problem will still be able to be found, one of them being difficulty in accessing a node as data traffic is piling up. One of the solutions is load balancing, which is implementing a system that will redirect packets to different service providers to ease up the load and reduce the number of packets that are dropped due to timeouts. This paper analyses the impact of load balancing in an extreme case emulated environment using Mini-NDN and random load balancing strategy. From the results gathered, implementing random load balancing to the consumer nodes decreases-and in some cases eliminates-dropped packets. In addition, implementing load balancing stabilizes packets' RTT (Round Trip Time) but increases the average RTT compared to using best route forwarding in an unloaded environment. © 2023 IEEE.

The article the efficiency of the Microgrid network when transitioning to a transactive power system that uses control algorithms called to optimize the distribution of power between sources of distributed generation and to minimize the time of decision-making about mode switching and at the corresponding change of the power system architecture. Tables and graphs of the conducted modeling are presented and the efficiency of this control-optimized system is calculated in comparison with the power system where uniform distribution of load power is used. © 2024 IEEE.

In modern society, object detection tasks have become extremely important due to their numerous applications in fields such as autonomous driving, surveillance, and healthcare. Real-time detection is particularly crucial for many applications. However, with the advancements in deep learning-based object detection methods, high performance often comes with high computational resource requirements, posing challenges for real-time monitoring, especially on resource-constrained devices. To address this issue, we study model compression using both transfer learning (TL) and knowledge distillation (KD). Specifically, we use the YOLOv5n model as a test case to show the basic idea for improving the performance of a small student model using a larger dataset for TL and a larger model for KD. As for KD, we further investigate feature-based and output-based KD. Experimental results show that the small student model can be improved significantly using TL and KD, with the mean Average Precision (mAP 0. 5 ) being increased by 13.28% compared to the baseline model. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of TL and KD in achieving high detection performance while reducing computational demands, making them suitable for various real-world applications.

A common way of solving satisfiability instances with quantum methods is to transform these instances into instances of QUBO, which in itself is a potentially difficult and expensive task. State-of-the-art transformations from MAX-3SAT to QUBO currently work by mapping clauses of a 3SAT formula associated with the MAX-3SAT instance to an instance of QUBO and combining the resulting QUBOs into a single QUBO instance representing the whole MAX-3SAT instance. As creating these transformations is currently done manually or via exhaustive search methods and, therefore, algorithmically inefficient, we see potential for including search-based optimization. In this paper, we propose two methods of using evolutionary algorithms to automatically create QUBO representations of MAX-3SAT problems. We evaluate our created QUBOs on 500 and 1000-clause 3SAT formulae and find competitive performance to state-of-the-art baselines when using both classical and quantum annealing solvers. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Information hiding is one of the most critical techniques in information security. The goal of this task is to encrypt the maximum number of digits while introducing the minimum modification to the original medium. Soft sensors have been applied to the domain of human motion tracking and shown their advantages over existing optics and inertial sensors. However, soft sensors still suffer from low signal-to-noise ratios. This flaw provides inherent robustness to information decryption. Our work introduces the use of soft sensor signals as the medium for information hiding and develops a novel method to select the optimal channel given a multi-sensor scenario. We use a Sudoku matrix to encrypt the information in the signal flow of soft sensors. And an encryption channel selection algorithm based on tracking error is proposed to reduce the impact on information loss. The experimental results show that the soft sensors can effectively serve as the medium of information hiding with our proposed method. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Electricity Consumption by ICT: Facts, trends, and measurements

This paper considers key issues surrounding energy consumption by information and communication technologies (ICT), which has been steadily growing and is now attaining approximately 10% of the worldwide electricity consumption with a significant impact on greenhouse gas emissions. The perimeter of ICT systems is discussed, and the role of the subsystems that compose ICT is considered. Data from recent years is used to understand how each of these sub-systems contribute to ICT's energy consumption. The quantitatively demonstrated positive correlation between the penetration of ICT in the world's different economies and the same economies' contributions to undesirable greenhouse gas emissions is also discussed. The paper also examines how emerging technologies such as 5G, AI, edge computing, and cryptocurrencies are contributing to the worldwide increase in electricity consumption by ICT, despite the increases in ICT efficiency, in terms of energy consumed per bit processed, stored, or transmitted. The measurement of specific ICT systems' electricity consumption is also addressed, and the manner in which this consumption can be minimized in a specific edge computing context is discussed.

This research uses a new proposed multi-objective optimization algorithm that utilizes an untested combined chaotic map to integrate Customized Mutated PSO (CM-PSO) with a Modified Genetic Algorithm (MGA) to design an antenna with specific electromagnetic characteristics. The hybrid approach achieves preferred outcomes faster than PSO, CM-PSO, GA, and MGA by avoiding being trapped in local minimums. The proposed Metaheuristic Algorithm (MA) functionality has been authenticated successfully using Benchmark Functions (BFs) like Rastrigin Function (RaF), Ackley Function (AF), Rosenbrock Function (RoF), and Booth Function (BoF). Finally, the validity of the offered approach for electromagnetic applications is demonstrated by optimizing a dual-band planar microstrip monopole antenna with a simple structure, such that its optimized S11 be less than -10 dB at two frequency bands encompasses 2.4 to 2.484 and 5.15 to 5.825 GHz for Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) with IEEE 802.11 standards. The proposed algorithm allows the optimization criteria to be customized. The optimization algorithm developed in MATLAB is used to determine the necessary parameter adjustments in order to achieve expected frequency bands using CM-PSO or an innovative MGA, while high-frequency and electromagnetic simulations are performed using computer Simulation Technology (CST) Studio Suite. The dimensions of the proposed antenna's elements are critical input parameters of the algorithm, named decision variables. © 2023 IEEE.

Although NDN is an entirely new architecture, its design principles are based on the success of the current Internet, they represent our knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of the current Internet architecture, and they can be implemented gradually using the operations of the current Internet. The Pending Interest Table (PIT), the Forwarding Information Base (FIB), and the Content Store (CS) are the three data structures found inside the NDN router. Interest sent upstream to the content source is tracked by the Pending Interest Table (PIT), for data to be transmitted to requesters downstream. PIT is also used for measurement, loop detection, and the containment of recently satisfied interest. In this study, we did the simulation to measure and analyze the performance of PIT in NDN using NFD Pipeline Measurements. The NDNSim simulator was used in the research to observe PIT performance. The findings of the simulation and analysis indicated that in an NDN network, Satisfied Interest was influenced by the granularity of a prefix. At the number of interests 1000, the results showed a decrease in packets, including a decrease of around 21% in the Ininterest packet, and around 30% inSatisfiedInterest and InData. The effect of Prefix length also decreased in Ininterest ranging from 0.014-0.015%, while in inSatisfiedInterest and InData it ranged from 4.2-8.5%. The PIT’s performance was influenced by the length of the prefix and the number of interest messages the customer sent.

Smart Grids (SG) rely on Home Area Networks (HAN) and Neighborhood Area Networks (NAN) to ensure efficient power distribution, real-time monitoring, and seamless communication between smart devices. Despite these advantages, the use of public communication channels in HAN and NAN networks introduces critical challenges, such as vulnerability to impersonation, physical tampering, and scalability issues in resource-constrained environments. These issues compromise the stability, reliability, and security of SG environments. Existing protocols often fail to adequately address these challenges, particularly in ensuring resistance to physical tampering of supply lines and impersonation attacks. Additionally, they struggle to minimize the computation, communication, and energy costs associated with securing a resource-constrained SG environment. Therefore, we propose a robust key exchange and tamper-resistant protocol for HAN and NAN networks to address these limitations. The proposed protocol leverages the Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) mechanism to offer physical tampering resistance to smart meters. We validate our protocol formally using the Random or Real (RoR) model, which confirms its security robustness. Additionally, our informal security analysis highlights the protocol's resilience against impersonation, physical tampering attacks, etc. We analyze and compare the performance of the proposed protocol, which further demonstrates our protocol's effectiveness and security compared to competing protocols. Moreover, the proposed protocol achieves resource efficiency with 45.99% and 58.85% substantial reductions in computation overhead and energy overhead, respectively, compared to competing protocols. These results showcase the protocol's enhanced security and practicality for resource-constrained SG environments. © 2014 IEEE.
