Personalized learning has achieved the attention of many researchers in the Education field. Personalized learning is a teaching model in which students (learners) have a central role in the learning process. By using this approach, educational methods, and techniques are customized and adapted to be better suited for each learner, with their unique learning style, background, needs, and previous experiences. Based on what the learners have already learned, subjects have already known, and skills have already developed each student in a personalized learning process will get a "learning plan". This approach is different from a conventional approach or known as the "one size fits all" approach. The challenge of personalized learning is how to connect a learner’s previous knowledge, skills and with learning materials that will link that understanding with new knowledge. This paper presents a novelty technique to implement personalized learning by automating a predicted linkage between a student in higher education and elective courses based on previous learning achievement. In this study, Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) are used to address link prediction tasks between student and elective courses. The empirical results showed that the GCN model can be used to predict elective courses for a student with 62.5 % average accuracy.

The state of the art of artificial intelligence (AI) for various medical imaging applications leads to enhanced accuracy, analysis, visualization, and interpretation of chest Xray (CXR) images for diagnosis. Many diseases are diagnosed based on CXR images. In this paper, two types of abnormalities are diagnosed based on AI techniques. The two classes are atelectasis and cardiomegaly. The acquired images are segmented to localize the chest region and then enhanced using gray-level transformation methods. The enhanced images are passed to two pretrained convolutional neural networks (CNNs): shuffle and mobile net. The transfer learning approach is utilized in this stage. The automated features are extracted from the last fully connected layer. Each CNN deserves to have the two most representative features for the two classes. These four features are passed to support the vector machine classifier. The training accuracy reached 100% and the test accuracy was 96.7%. The proposed method can be extended to be a milestone in the classification of all heart-lung diseases that can be diagnosed using chest X-ray images. © 2022 IEEE.

The theses is in line with works aimed at studying the possibility of using mathematical algorithms for parallel processing of information in reverse blockchain technology. The paper examines the use of parallel signal processing algorithms to improve the speed and quality of control systems for autonomous dynamic objects using reverse blockchain technology. The use of reverse blockchain technology is due to the possibility of loss of control signals and, at the same time, the inadmissibility of loss of control in the event of changes in the conditions and parameters of the operation of the obj ect. The purpose of the work is to analyze the implementation of solutions for parallel information processing for various models of industrially produced equipment and to develop solutions to increase the efficiency of reverse blockchain technology when using parallel data processing.

In this work, we classify the stress state of car drivers using multimodal physiological signals and regularized deep kernel learning. Using a driving simulator in a controlled environment, we acquire electrocardiography (ECG), electrodermal activity (EDA), photoplethysmography (PPG), and respiration rate (RESP) from N = 10 healthy drivers in experiments of 25min duration with different stress states (5min resting, 10min driving, 10min driving + answering cognitive questions). We manually remove unusable segments and approximately 4h of data remain. Multimodal time and frequency features are extracted and employed to regularized deep kernel machine learning based on a fusion framework. Task-specific representations of different physiological signals are combined using intermediate fusion. Subsequently, the fused multimodal features are fed a support vector machine (SVM) and a random forest (RF) for stress classification. The experimental results show that the proposed approach can discriminate between stress states. The combination of PPG and ECG using RF as classifier yields the highest F1-score of 0.97 in the test set. PPG only and RF yield a maximum F1-score of 0.90. Furthermore, subject-specific cross-validation improves performance. ECG and PPG signals are reliable in classifying the stress state of a car driver. In summary, the proposed framework could be extended to real-time stress state assessment in driving conditions.

New Combinatorial Insights for Monotone Apportionment

The apportionment problem constitutes a fundamental problem in democratic societies: How to distribute a fixed number of seats among a set of states in proportion to the states’ populations? This—seemingly simple—task has led to a rich literature and has become well known in the context of the US House of Representatives. In this paper, we connect the design of monotone apportionment methods to classic problems from discrete geometry and combinatorial optimization and explore the extent to which randomization can enhance proportionality. We first focus on the well-studied family of stationary divisor methods, which satisfy the strong population monotonicity property, and show that this family produces only a slightly superlinear number of different outputs as a function of the number of states. While our upper and lower bounds leave a small gap, we show that—surprisingly—closing this gap would solve a long-standing open problem from discrete geometry, known as the complexity of k-levels in line arrangements. The main downside of divisor methods is their violation of the quota axiom, i.e., every state should receive ⌊qi⌋ or ⌈qi⌉ seats, where qi is the proportional share of the state. As we show that randomizing over divisor methods can only partially overcome this issue, we propose a relaxed version of divisor methods in which the total number of seats may slightly deviate from the house size. By randomizing over these methods, we can simultaneously satisfy population monotonicity, quota, and ex-ante proportionality. Finally, we turn our attention to quota-compliant methods that are house-monotone, i.e., no state may lose a seat when the house size is increased. We provide a polyhedral characterization based on network flows, which implies a simple description of all ex-ante proportional randomized methods that are house-monotone and quota-compliant. computerized medical image examination (CMIE) plays a significant role in modern hospitals to achieve the necessary tasks, like segmentation and classification. By segmenting an image, we can extract a particular section for examination. A two-dimensional computed tomography (CT) slice was used for liver-vessel examination (LiVE). A simple automatic technique for supporting LiVE is being developed in this research. A CT slice is collected, a 3D to 2D conversion is done, (ii) Kapur's tri-level thresholding and Hummingbird-Optimizer is used to enhance the CT slice, (iii) the watershed algorithm (WA) is used to extract the vessel, and (iv) the WA is compared and verified against the segmentation methods chosen. WA provides better segmentation results than other methods because it is an automatic approach. Using the chosen image database, the proposed technique achieves an overall segmentation accuracy of >97%. Other segmentation problems can be used in the future to verify the merit of this scheme. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

Space-air-ground integrated networks have the potential to offer extensive coverage beyond 5G and 6G services, as well as the cloud continuum. Managing network traffic in large-scale space-air-ground networks presents a significant challenge due to the dynamic nature of traffic demand and network topology. Additionally, the large-scale low earth orbit (LEO) constellation makes solving the traffic engineering optimization problem impractical. To tackle these challenges, we introduce the Cluster-based Elephant flow Splitting via Linear Programming (CESLP) algorithm, which can rapidly evaluate the maximum link utilization (MLU). CESLP classifies traffic flows into mice and elephant flows, and focuses on improving the splitting ratio for elephant flows. Using a divide and conquer strategy, CESLP divides the LEO constellation into multiple clusters, identifying the cluster with the most congested edge and minimizing its MLU by solving the Linear Programming (LP) sub-problems. Simulation is conducted on synthetic traffic matrices for Starlink constellation, and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of the CESLP algorithm in reducing MLU compared with other baseline routing algorithms.

Using medical data to improve diagnosis accuracy has recently become common practice in hospitals. A modern computing environment has enabled real-time diagnosis of medical data using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). To extract and evaluate skin melanoma recorded with digital dermatoscopy images (DDI), we developed a CNN segmentation framework. In this proposal, four phases are proposed: (i) DDI collection and resizing, (ii) DDI enhancement using pre-processing techniques, (iii) CNN segmentation for lesion extraction, (v) Comparing the extracted sections to the ground truth images, and (v) Verifying whether the framework is valid. Using DDI pre-processed with (i) Traditional procedures, (ii) Otsu's thresholding, (iii) Kapur's thresholding, and (iv) Fuzzy-Tsallis thresholding, this proposal examines the different CNN segmentation schemes presented in the literature. For mining skin lesions, the Moth-Flame Algorithm (MFA) combined with tri-level thresholding achieves an optimal threshold for the DDI. With Fuzzy-Tsallis thresholding images, the VGG-UNet performs better than the alternatives. This framework helps to achieve better values of Jaccard (88.47±2.13%), Dice (93.08±1.17%), and Accuracy (98.64±0.71%) on the chosen DDI database. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

A proven therapeutic technique to overcome negative thoughts is to replace them with a more hopeful "reframed thought." Although therapy can help people practice and learn this Cognitive Reframing of Negative Thoughts, clinician shortages and mental health stigma commonly limit people's access to therapy. In this paper, we conduct a human-centered study of how language models may assist people in reframing negative thoughts. Based on psychology literature, we define a framework of seven linguistic attributes that can be used to reframe a thought. We develop automated metrics to measure these attributes and validate them with expert judgements from mental health practitioners. We collect a dataset of 600 situations, thoughts and reframes from practitioners and use it to train a retrieval-enhanced in-context learning model that effectively generates reframed thoughts and controls their linguistic attributes. To investigate what constitutes a "high-quality" reframe, we conduct an IRB-approved randomized field study on a large mental health website with over 2,000 participants. Amongst other findings, we show that people prefer highly empathic or specific reframes, as opposed to reframes that are overly positive. Our findings provide key implications for the use of LMs to assist people in overcoming negative thoughts. © 2023 Association for Computational Linguistics.

computerized disease detection systems (CDDs) have proven effective for automatic screening in recent years. Among the standard procedures in hospitals for faster and more accurate diagnosis is medical imaging-based disease screening. We aim to develop a CDD that detects COVID-19 using chest X-rays pre-trained vision transformers (PVTs). This scheme includes the following steps: (1) collecting images and resizing them, (2) implementing PVT for feature extraction, and (3) binary classifying the results and validating the proposed schemes. To prove the merit of the developed scheme, 4800 images (2400 normal and 2400 COVID-19) are analyzed. MLP classifiers verify the PVT performance using patch sizes of 6, 12, and 24. A patch size 24 results in 97.5% accuracy for the proposed CDD system. When patch sizes are increased to 12, accuracy increases to over 98%. For this specific task, smaller patch sizes are more effective. These high-accuracy results demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed scheme for detecting COVID-19 in chest X-rays. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.
