This paper discusses assistive technologies developed for Sinhala-speaking dyslexics, focusing on the challenges they face and how existing tools attempt to address them. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework, this review analyzed research publications from 2015 to 2024, highlighting topics such as phonetic processing, text normalization, and error detection. Of the 85 initially reviewed, 32 were included in the meta-analysis to represent major challenges posed by the lack of annotated datasets and Natural Language Processing (NLP) resources tailored to the cognitive and linguistic needs of the adult patient population. This review points out the need for the extension of low-resource language toolkits and proper integration of assistive NLP applications. The study concludes that while significant progress has been made, a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach is crucial to improving literacy, independence, and social participation for Sinhala-speaking adults with dyslexia. © 2025 IEEE.

This study Rasathura explores the emotional dimensions of Sri Lankan music, specifically Sinhala songs, by developing an emotional classification model using both audio features and lyrical analysis. The research addresses the limitations in emotional classification using advanced Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques for Sinhala music. For audio analysis, JAudio was used to extract musical data, and machine learning (ML) techniques, including Random Forest, Sequential Minimal Optimization (SMO), Naive Bayes, Decision Tree, and Logistic Regression, were evaluated for classification. Relief-based and correlation-based attribute selection were utilized to enhance classification accuracy. The SMO algorithm achieved an accuracy of 75.92% using JAudio features, which increased to 79.01% with Relief-based attribute selection. The BERT model (built on XLM-RoBERTa) was used for lyrical analysis, achieving a maximum accuracy of 61.22%. TFIDF, Word2Vec with n-grams, and BERT embeddings were evaluated for feature extraction in lyrical data. The findings could benefit the future music industry by creating personalized music recommendation systems, enhancing music therapy applications, and contributing to preserving cultural heritage through digital music archiving. © 2025 IEEE.

Sport action recognition is an interesting area in computer vision. Categorization of sport actions, representing difficult and complex body postures, is regarded as a fine-grained visual classification problem. The Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have attained enhanced performance over conventional feature descriptors in recognizing various sport activities. In general, though decent improvement has been gained using deep learning for sport action recognition, however, recognition of women’s sport activities is not widely explored. Even, no benchmark dataset depicting women’s sport action with sufficient variations is available yet for study. Hence, fine-grained image classification of diverse sport categories involving female/women athletics requires immediate research attention. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposes an image dataset comprising worldwide popular 50 sport categories of women players only. A simple deep learning model is proposed that extracts the high-level deep features using a backbone CNN. Then, these features are pooled from a collection of regular regions representing local discriminative information. The spatial pyramid pooling is applied for mining semantic information and enhancing feature aggregation for classification. The proposed method has achieved satisfactory performance on the Women Sports dataset using four standard backbone CNNs. Moreover, our method has achieved better accuracy on the Yoga-82 pose recognition dataset with a significant margin, e.g., 11.6% gain using ResNet-50 base CNN. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

We study applications of clustering (in particular the k-center clustering problem) in the design of efficient and practical deterministic algorithms for computing an approximate and the exact arithmetic matrix product of two 0-1 rectangular matrices A and B with clustered rows or columns, respectively. Let λA and λB denote the minimum maximum radius of a cluster in an -center clustering of the rows of A and in a k-center clustering of the columns of B, respectively. In particular, assuming that the matrices have size n × n, we obtain the following results. 1. A simple deterministic algorithm that approximates each entry of the arithmetic matrix product of A and B within the additive error of at most 2λA in O(n2) time or at most 2λB in O(n2k) time. 2. Heart failure (HF) is a complex syndrome that is affected by many factors and causes. It is crucial to early recognize the disease subtypes and the unidentified clinical pathways that give rise to it. Machine learning (ML) is the tool that assist to deal with these challenges and improve the prediction of HF. In this work, the HF risk prediction was implemented by employed ML classifiers, such as Random Forest (RF), Extreme Grading Boosting (XGBoost) and Light Gradient-Boosting Machine (LGBM). We utilized the data from the German epidemiological trial on ankle brachial index - getABI cohort, which includes 6,454 patients. The performance of classifiers was estimated by Accuracy (ACC), Sensitivity, Specificity and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) in mean values for each ML classifier. The results were also interpreted using the Explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) approach, the Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) values. Our work reveals that LGBM classifier predict the HF risk within 5 years follow-up in general population with 68 % accuracy. Moreover, the N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) was identified as the most important feature for HF risk prediction. © 2024 IEEE.

Data Augmentation (DA) is an effective strategy to increase model generalisation. In Natural Language Processing (NLP), DA remains in its early stages, primarily due to the inherent sensitivity of textual data, which complicates the augmentation process. These complexities are further increased in multilingual contexts, as DA techniques effective in one language may not yield comparable results in others. As a result, manually identifying optimal DA techniques that preserve semantic integrity and are language agnostic remains a significant challenge. It emphasises the necessity for automating the text DA process with Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI), which offers a promising approach by calculating word importance scores to effectively guide the augmentation. In this paper, a comprehensive review of existing approaches in auto-text DA is presented, beginning with an exploration of the concept of auto-text DA, followed by a discussion on its cross-lingual applications, and concluding with the integration of XAI for semantic preservation. The paper highlights the critical need for further research to enhance the effectiveness and applicability of XAI in auto-text DA, enabling its use across diverse languages. © 2025 IEEE.

A Contend Node-Restricted Receiver-Initiated MAC Protocol With Consecutive Packet Transmission

The medium access control (MAC) protocol plays a crucial role in wireless communications, influencing key performance metrics, such as energy consumption, delay, collision, and throughput. This paper introduces the Contend Node Restricted Joint Consecutive Packet Transmissions Receiver-Initiated (CNR-CPT-RI) protocol, specifically designed to minimize collisions and reduce energy consumption in wake-up radio-enabled wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The CNR-CPT-RI protocol is an effective communication protocol that is mainly applied with nodes in the one-hop range of the sink. Since the sink has the ability to control each node, it becomes feasible to manage the nodes in a way that effectively reduces collisions and enhances network lifetime as well as throughput. Moreover, the CNR-CPT-RI protocol can adaptively adjust the number of nodes participating in channel contention, maintaining it within an optimal range to balance reduced collisions, decreased energy consumption, and sustained high throughput. Furthermore, the winning node in channel contention employs Consecutive Packet Transmissions (CPTs) method to further diminish competition. Comprehensive theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that the number of collisions of the CNR-CPT-RI protocol is only 42.4%, 35.9%, and 32.5% of the baseline protocol when the number of nodes is 10, 20, and 30, respectively. The energy consumption of the CNR-CPT-RI protocol is reduced by 5.7%, 15%, and 22.6%, and the delay is decreased by 6.7%, 16%, and 32%, respectively, compared with that of the existing protocol. © 2017 IEEE.

Automated Ground Vehicles (AGVs) use deep-learning-based vision systems to perceive the surrounding environment and extract relevant information about it. Although deep learning models offer high capabilities, they require large amounts of data to be properly trained and tested. Testing is especially important when off-the-shelf models are used by the AGVs - to examine whether they can meet the demands of complex environments such as the production halls of automated factories. One area of such perception algorithms is object recognition. To test such systems, we propose a solution based on ArUco fiducial markers used for automatic labeling of objects. Our solution can be used to test deep learning systems in real time directly on a robot. Our solution requires minimal interference with the environment and additional infrastructure - the desired objects only need to be marked with a marker printed on a home printer. Therefore, the presented testing procedure can be used for testing of AGVs in real-life environments during a real ride from an actual robot perspective. Data gathered during the online testing can be used for the offline comparison of the accuracy of different deep learning models. Although we focus on the online and offline testing in our study, we also incorporated a marker masking procedure. Therefore, the resulting datasets may also be used for training. © 2022 IEEE.

Wind turbines are an important component of the global strategy for the transition to renewable energy sources and the fight against climate change. Their implementation contributes to sustainable development and to improving the ecological situation of the planet. Detecting and elimination of defects helps reduce the wear of the components and prevent premature failure. This can significantly extend the life of wind turbines, which is economically beneficial for owners and operators. The use of UAVs allows for minimizing the risks for personnel, as inspection and diagnosis of defects can be carried out without the need to lift people to great heights or stay in dangerous areas. This is especially important for turbines located in places of difficult access. The images taken by the UAV contain many extraneous objects and fuzzy data. Fuzzy logic allows you to create models for pattern recognition and object classification in images, taking into account uncertainty and variation in the data. This increases the accuracy and reliability of pattern recognition systems. This article proposes an image processing system to detect wind turbine defects, with a fuzzy system module that selects images from a video stream for further processing. © 2024 IEEE.

The new generation of 5G networks, compared to 4G networks, is a very important example of change in achieving very high frequencies in the carrier with huge bandwidth, high densities with a huge number of antennas and improved quality of services, making effective interference management necessary. In this paper, we present the contribution of the Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) scheme to improving the performance of 5G networks. We refer to the technique of sequential interference cancellation applied to some NOMA formats, compare NOMA and Orthogonal Multiple Access (OMA) formats in terms of the capabilities they offer users and NOMA's significant contribution to Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology and compare three basic NOMA formats in three different resource and user reporting scenarios.
