The problem of cyclic scheduling of multimodal concurrent processes (MCPs) is considered. Processes composed of sub-sequences of local cyclic processes (LCPs) are treated as multimodal processes, e.g. in case local processes encompass the subway lines network the relevant multimodal processes can be seen as passengers traveling itineraries this network. Since LCPs network implies a MCPs behavior, the following fundamental questions arise: Does the given LCPs network guarantee an assumed cyclic schedule of the MCPs at hand? Does there exist the LCPs network such that an assumed cyclic schedule of MCPs can be achieved? In that context our contribution is to propose a declarative framework allowing one to take into account both direct and reverse problems formulation. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

With the increase in energy of the Large Hadron Collider to a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV for Run 2, events with dense environments, such as in the cores of highenergy jets, became a focus for new physics searches as well as measurements of the Standard Model. These environments are characterized by charged-particle separations of the order of the tracking detectors sensor granularity. Basic track quantities are compared between 3.2 fb(-1) of data collected by the ATLAS experiment and simulation of protonproton collisions producing high-transverse-momentum jets at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The impact of chargedparticle separations and multiplicities on the track reconstruction performance is discussed. The track reconstruction efficiency in the cores of jets with transverse momenta between 200 and 1600 GeV is quantified using a novel, datadriven, method. The method uses the energy loss, dE/ dx, to identify pixel clusters originating from two charged particles. Of the charged particles creating these clusters, themeasured fraction that fail to be reconstructed is 0.061 +/- 0.006 (stat.) +/- 0.014 (syst.) and 0.093 +/- 0.017 (stat.) +/- 0.021 (syst.) for jet transverse momenta of 200-400GeV and 1400-1600GeV, respectively.

The observed paradigm switch towards computational methods in research poses a serious challenge for e-infrastructure providers. Apart from delivering computing power, researchers are expected to create the foundation for complete and viable e-science environments. To address this demand, GridSpace2 was developed as a platform for provisioning reproducible, reviewable and reusable in-silico experiments. The resulting environment was applied in the scope of the PLGrid Plus project. In this work we analyze requirements, which should be met by in-silico experiments and describe how these requirements can be accommodated on the platform level, thus decreasing the costs of acquisition, preservation and curation of in-silico experiments. In order to evaluate our approach, we qualitatively assess how the features of GridSpace2 conform to these requirements and how the platform reduces the costs of provisioning in-silico experiments. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

In this paper, we investigated the working memory for object-location associations of 11 depressions when they induced by different emotional pictures (positive, neutral and negative), and compared with a control group of 14 normal subjects. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the correct rate of associative memory between depression and control group (P > 0.05), however, there was significant difference in the memory retrieval time (P < 0.05), which suggest that the memory retrieval needs more time resources. These results indicate that depression has a normal memory encoding network, but an abnormal memory retrieval network for object-location associations. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Although statistical graph comprehension has been investigated in cognitive psychology, it has not been reported in cognitive neuroscience. The study designed an experimental condition, i.e., a statistical graph (SG), and two control conditions, i.e., a text (ST) and a statistical graph with text (SGT), where the ST is a verbal description of the information from the SG, and the SGT is a mixed graph + textual description. We used fMRI to analyze the brain activity of 36 normal subjects while they passively view the statistical information presented in any of SG, ST, and SGT. The results indicate that statistical graph comprehension requires the involvement of both ventral and dorsal streams, with more dependence on the ventral stream than the dorsal. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Gaze mismatch is a common problem in video conferencing, where the viewpoint captured by a camera (usually located above or below a display monitor) is not aligned with the gaze direction of the human subject, who typically looks at his counterpart in the center of the screen. This means that the two parties cannot converse eye-to-eye, hampering the quality of visual communication. One conventional approach to the gaze mismatch problem is to synthesize a gaze-corrected face image as viewed from center of the screen via depth-image-based rendering (DIBR), assuming texture and depth maps are available at the camera-captured viewpoint(s). Due to self-occlusion, however, there will be missing pixels in the DIBR-synthesized view image that require satisfactory filling. In this paper, we propose to jointly solve the hole-filling problem and the face beautification problem (subtle modifications of facial features to enhance attractiveness of the rendered face) via a unified dual sparse coding framework. Specifically, we first train two dictionaries separately: one for face images of the intended conference subject, one for images of "beautiful" human faces. During synthesis, we simultaneously seek two code vectors - one is sparse in the first dictionary and explains the available DIBR-synthesized pixels, the other is sparse in the second dictionary and matches well with the first vector up to a restricted linear transform. This ensures a good match with the intended target face, while increasing proximity to "beautiful" facial features to improve attractiveness. Experimental results show naturally rendered human faces with noticeably improved attractiveness.

There is an ongoing research on reconciling the difference between predicted/simulated and actual energy consumption in buildings (either in design or in operational phase). In this paper a fully automated acquisition system for occupancy and energy measurement data is going to be presented. The proposed system comprises a depth camera cloud and RFID for occupancy extraction, a network of CO2and temperature sensors and separate energy meters for HVAC, lighting, wall sockets and equipment. The extracted occupancy and energy consumption measurements of the proposed system could be utilized in a variety of applications, such as real-time control strategies, performance simulation analysis, high semantic occupancy and energy consumption information extraction, even business processes analysis and simulation. The proposed system has been evaluated to a large scale experiment, and its accuracy and robustness will prove its significance to the occupancy simulation processes, as well as to any kind of application that exploits occupancy.

In highly dense LTE networks, with the increased number of users requesting services in a cell, blocking will occur for some users. To deal with this, techniques for increasing the capacity of the cell must be adopted. Clustering nodes into small groups with low power will enable reusing the available frequency and thus expanding the capacity of the network. In this paper, clustering is implemented in a way to configure the nodes into groups each having one cluster-head (CH) that communicates directly with the Base Station (BS), while other nodes, called slaves, relay their communication through cluster-head nodes. The implementation of different clustering strategies that are adapted for the LTE environment is proposed. Two of the well-known clustering algorithms, namely K-means and the Hierarchical Agglomerative Clustering (HAC), are used for this purpose. Moreover, the use of selection strategy for configuring the nodes is also implemented and compared with the other two clustering techniques. A proper frequency allocation and power control scheme is implemented in order to avoid excessive interference and get valid clustering formations in all cases.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the performance of Vector Evaluated Differential Evolution (VEDE) and Vector Evaluated Particle Swarm Optimization (VEPSO) in solving a real world financial optimization problem. The algorithms have been applied to the Reinsurance Contract Problem, which is a challenging problem in computational finance, and their performance has been evaluated in terms of metrics including the average number of solutions, the average hypervolume and the coverage. Results have shown that both algorithms can reach good solutions, however VEPSO tends to perform better. © 2014 IEEE.
