Data deduplication is an attractive technology to reduce storage space and upload bandwidth for increasing vast amount of duplicated and redundant data. In a cloud storage system with data deduplication, duplicate copies of data will be eliminated and only one copy will be kept in the storage. To protect the confidentiality of sensitive data while supporting deduplication, the convergent encryption technique has been proposed to encrypt the data before outsourcing. However, the issue of keyword search over encrypted data in deduplication storage system has to be addressed for efficient data utilization. This paper firstly proposes two constructions which support secure keyword search in this scenario. In these constructions, the integrity of the data can be realized by just checking the convergent key, without other traditional integrity auditing mechanisms. Security analysis demonstrates that our keyword search schemes are secure in terms of the definitions specified in the proposed security model.

Wilms tumor, or nephroblastoma, is a cancer of the kidneys that typically occurs in children and rarely in adults. Around 10% of Wilms tumor patients are diagnosed having a concurrent syndrome that enhances the risk of Wilms tumor. A screening method for early detection of Wilms tumor in these patients would be beneficial, since the size or stage of a tumor is related to outcome. We introduce a miRNA pathway analysis methodology that takes into account the topology and regulation mechanisms of the gene regulatory networks and identify disrupted sub-paths in known pathways, using miRNA- expressions. The methodology was applied on a miRNA-expression study and a predictive model was developed, using machine-learning (decision-tree induction) approaches. The model is able to identify putative mechanisms that underlie and govern the Wilms tumor phenotype, and discriminate between diseased and healthy subjects. Initial experimental results are promising and in line with the relevant biomedical literature.

We consider the problem of electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) source localization using beamforming techniques. Specifically, we propose a reduced-rank extension of the recently derived multi-source activity index (MAI), which itself is an extension of the classical neural activity index to the multi-source case. We show that, for uncorrelated dipole sources and any nonzero rank constraint, the proposed reduced-rank multi-source activity index (RR-MAI) achieves the global maximum when evaluated at the true source positions. Therefore, the RR-MAI can be used to localize multiple sources simultaneously. Furthermore, we propose another version of the RR-MAI which can be seen as a natural generalization of the proposed index to arbitrarily correlated sources. We present a series of numerical simulations showing that the RR-MAI can achieve a more precise source localization than the full-rank MAI in the case when the EEG/MEG forward model becomes ill-conditioned, which in our settings corresponds to the case of closely positioned sources and low signal-to-noise ratio.

This paper proposes a visual object contour tracking algorithm using a multi-cue fusion particle filter. A novel contour evolution energy is proposed which integrates an incrementally learnt model of object appearance with a parametric snake model. This energy function is combined with a mixed cascade particle filter tracking algorithm which fuses multiple observation models for object contour tracking. Bending energy due to contour evolution is modelled using a thin plate spline (TPS). Multiple order graph matching is performed between contours in consecutive frames. Both of the above are taken as observation models for contour deformation;these models are fused efficiently using a mixed cascade sampling process. The dynamic model used in our tracking method is further improved by the use of optical flow. Experiments on real videos show that our approach provides high performance object contour tracking. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Microarray gene expression datasets comprise of a large number of genes in contrast to a small number of samples, thus having a high dimension of variables. Analysis of microarray data can lead us to many useful conclusions. In many microarray data analyses, selecting a small subset of genes which are of significance for a particular type of disease is an important issue but selection of such genes become difficult due to many irrelevant genes and noisy genes. The process of gene selection helps to extract the most informative genes, which consequently aid to build a robust prediction model using those genes. In this study, we employ a hybrid Chemical Reaction Optimization (CRO) based filter-wrapper methodology, which uses an information gain gene ranking heuristic to simultaneously extract informative gene subsets and build robust cancer classification models. The performance of the proposed method was tested on three benchmark gene expression datasets obtained from the Kent Ridge Biomedical datasets collection and the LIBSVM data repository. CRO results demonstrate its capability to select relevant genes with high confidence in comparison to the results reported earlier.

Prompt photon production in sNN=2.76-TeV Pb+Pb collisions has been measured by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using data collected in 2011 with an integrated luminosity of 0.14 nb−1. Inclusive photon yields, scaled by the mean nuclear thickness function, are presented as a function of collision centrality and transverse momentum in two pseudorapidity intervals, |η|<1.37 and 1.52≤|η|<2.37. The scaled yields in the two pseudorapidity intervals, as well as the ratios of the forward yields to those at midrapidity, are compared to the expectations from next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations. The measured cross sections agree well with the predictions for proton-proton collisions within statistical and systematic uncertainties. Both the yields and the ratios are also compared to two other pQCD calculations, one which uses the isospin content appropriate to colliding lead nuclei and another which includes nuclear modifications to the nucleon parton distribution functions.

In this paper, we provide a constructive methodology for the design of decentralized control laws for a class of interconnected retarded systems subject to actuator disturbances. We consider Control Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals for only subsystems, thus reducing the difficulty with respect to finding an overall functional, and then provide a controller which, by means of a small-gain condition, guarantees practical input-to-state stability with respect to disturbances. If the disturbances are bounded, the controller allows to drive the system variables to any small neighborhood of the origin, by suitably tuning a control parameter.

In the paper the combined approach to the problem of text region recognition problem is presented. We focused our attention on the chosen case of text extraction problem from specific type of images where text is imposed over graphical layer of vector images (charts, diagrams, etc.). For such images we proposed three-stage method using OCR tools as some kind of feed-back in process of text region searching. Some experimental results and examples of practical applications of recognition method are also briefly described. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013.

As the world becomes an interconnected network where objects and humans interact with each other, new challenges and threats appear in the ecosystem. In this interconnected world, smart objects have an important role in giving users the chance for life-logging in smart environments. However, smart devices have several limitations with regards to memory, resources and computation power, hindering the opportunity to apply well-established security algorithms and techniques for secure life-logging on the Internet of Things (IoT) domain. The need for secure and trustworthy life-logging in smart environments is vital, thus, a lightweight approach has to be considered to overcome the constraints of Smart Objects. The purpose of this paper is to present in details the current topics of life-logging in smart environments, while describing interconnection issues, security threats and suggesting a lightweight framework for ensuring security, privacy and trustworthy life-logging. In order to investigate the efficiency of the lightweight framework and the impact of the security attacks on energy consumption, an experimental test-bed was developed including two interconnected users and one smart attacker, who attempts to intercept transmitted messages or interfere with the communication link. Several mitigation factors, such as power control, channel assignment and AES-128 encryption were applied for secure life-logging. Finally, research into the degradation of the consumed energy regarding the described intrusions is presented. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
