In the paper the combined approach to the problem of text region recognition problem is presented. We focused our attention on the chosen case of text extraction problem from specific type of images where text is imposed over graphical layer of vector images (charts, diagrams, etc.). For such images we proposed three-stage method using OCR tools as some kind of feed-back in process of text region searching. Some experimental results and examples of practical applications of recognition method are also briefly described. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013.

As the world becomes an interconnected network where objects and humans interact with each other, new challenges and threats appear in the ecosystem. In this interconnected world, smart objects have an important role in giving users the chance for life-logging in smart environments. However, smart devices have several limitations with regards to memory, resources and computation power, hindering the opportunity to apply well-established security algorithms and techniques for secure life-logging on the Internet of Things (IoT) domain. The need for secure and trustworthy life-logging in smart environments is vital, thus, a lightweight approach has to be considered to overcome the constraints of Smart Objects. The purpose of this paper is to present in details the current topics of life-logging in smart environments, while describing interconnection issues, security threats and suggesting a lightweight framework for ensuring security, privacy and trustworthy life-logging. In order to investigate the efficiency of the lightweight framework and the impact of the security attacks on energy consumption, an experimental test-bed was developed including two interconnected users and one smart attacker, who attempts to intercept transmitted messages or interfere with the communication link. Several mitigation factors, such as power control, channel assignment and AES-128 encryption were applied for secure life-logging. Finally, research into the degradation of the consumed energy regarding the described intrusions is presented. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We present a novel analysis of the state of the art in object tracking with respect to diversity found in its main component, an ensemble classifier that is updated in an online manner. We employ established measures for diversity and performance from the rich literature on ensemble classification and online learning, and present a detailed evaluation of diversity and performance on benchmark sequences in order to gain an insight into how the tracking performance can be improved. © Springer-Verlag 2013.

A decentralized cooperative control strategy engaging offline and online computations for constrained multi-agent vehicle systems is presented in this paper. Intermittent data dropouts may incur concurrently to all vehicle agents in this formulation. Demands on communication links and online data are limited with a perturbed state-feedback strategy, which consists of a static cooperative-state feedback and an online-optimizing perturbation. The former compensates for the interagent communication-coupled dynamics. The latter attends to constraints and data losses, adopting only decoupled objective functions. The state feedback gain is determined in accordance with the interconnection topology of the formation, which is described by a directed graph in this paper. The ADC - asymptotically dissipative constraint, is employed in the overriding control strategy of stabilizing agents such that the inter-operability between remote manoeuvres and local autonomous commands becomes practically realizable. The equilibrium-independent supply rate and storage function are used in the stabilizability condition in this development for the final-state tracking of the cooperative formation problem. © 2013 IEEE.

Nowadays organizations continuously update, adopt or introduce new Information technology Systems within their structure. This requires great resources in capital, staff and time. Selection and adoption of the proper information system and/or technologies must be performed in a way which will ensure that the system will meet the requirements and will fit in the organization's procedures and structure. This paper proposes a methodology for selecting the appropriate solution for an organization among the available options. It describes the requirement analysis phase where the selection criteria are defined and the available solutions are evaluated. For the evaluation of the different solutions, the Bipolar Analytic Hierarchical Process (BAHP) is proposed. The best solution is selected so as to fulfill the functional requirements and the requirements of the organization regarding the maintenance needs and the cost. The proposed approach is tested for the case of the Port Authority of Igoumenitsa, Greece. © 2013 DIME UNIVERSITÀ DI GENOVA.

In an interconnected cyber-world, Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) appear to play an increasingly important role in smart ecosystems. A variety of resource-constrained thin clients, such as sensors, RFIDs, actuators and smart devices, are included in the list of CPS. These devices can be used in a number of medical, vehicular, aviation, military and smart cities applications. A plethora of sensitive data is transmitted in insecure wireless or wired environments whilst adversaries are eager to eavesdrop, modify or destroy sensed data invading the privacy of user-centric CPSs. This work presents an overview and analysis of the most effective attacks, privacy challenges and mitigation techniques for preserving the privacy of users and their interconnected devices. In order to preserve privacy, a privacy-level model is proposed in which users have the capability of assigning different privacy levels based on the variety and severity of privacy challenges and devices' capabilities. Finally, we evaluate the performance of specific CPSs at different privacy-levels in terms of time and consumed energy in an experimental test-bed that we have developed. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

This video presents our preliminary work towards addressing the ladder climbing event in DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC) using DRC-Hubo robot. A ladder-climbing motion planner is developed which generates a collision-free, stable quasi-static trajectory for execution. Compliance control is enabled on arm joints to compensate for the calibration error, modeling error and control error. We have demonstrated that DRC-Hubo can robustly climb a variety of ladders in simulation and successfully climb a ship ladder on the hardware.

The paper presents constraint satisfaction problem driven approach to analytical solution of the cyclic scheduling problem in the Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) producing multi-type parts where for material handling are used the Automated Guide Vehicles Systems (AGVS). Finding the conditions guaranteeing the AGVs deadlock-free and collision-free movement policy is the aim of our researches. The AGVs co-sharing the common parts of the transportation route while executing repetitive processes, i.e. being assigned to AGVs passing along machines in a cyclic way, can be modeled in terms of Cyclic Concurrent Process Systems (CCPS). Schedulability analysis for a given CCPS answers the question whether a cyclic schedule exists or not. The paper suggests approach for schedulability analysis of multimodal processes representing real manufacturing employing the declarative modeling. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Creative metaphors abound in language because they facilitate communication that is memorable, effective and elastic. Such metaphors allow a speaker to be maximally suggestive while being minimally committed to any single interpretation, so they can both supply and elicit information in a conversation. Yet, though metaphors are often used to articulate affective viewpoints and information needs in everyday language, they are rarely used in information retrieval (IR) queries. IR fails to distinguish between creative and uncreative uses of words, since it typically treats words as literal mentions rather than suggestive allusions. We show here how a computational model of affective comprehension and generation allows IR users to express their information needs with creative metaphors that concisely allude to a dense body of assertions. The key to this approach is a lexicon of stereotypical concepts and their affective properties. We show how such a lexicon is harvested from the open web and from local web n-grams. © 2013 Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Computational Creativity, ICCC 2013.
