One of the most widespread techniques to evaluate various aspects of a manufacturing system is discrete-event simulation (DES). However, building a simulation model of a manufacturing system is a difficult task and needs great resource expenditures. Automated data collection and model buildup can drastically reduce the time of the design phase as well as support model reusability. Since most of the manufacturing systems are controlled by low level controllers (e.g., PLCs, CNCs) they inherently store structure and control logic of the system to be modeled by a DES system. The paper introduces an ongoing research of PLC code processing method for automatic ISA standard simulation model generation of a conveyor system of a leading automotive factory. Results of the validation process and simulation experiments are also described through a case study.

This paper presents the enhancements that we have done on the TRAFIL (TRAce FILe) framework, which significantly extend its capabilities in the areas of simulation design and execution. In particular, TRAFIL now offers the possibility to design, create, execute and review NS-2 simulation scenarios, on top of its existing post-simulation trace analysis functionalities. The enhancements make TRAFIL a complete wrapper around the NS-2 simulator, allowing the user to perform all steps from pre-simulation design to actual simulation execution in an automated way and fast and convenient post-simulation analysis of potentially large amount of data. The paper describes the new TRAFIL architecture and how these enhancements were implemented with the goal of relieving NS-2 users from the often cumbersome tasks of script writing and validating, while also enabling them at to go behind the TRAFIL environment and into the simulator internals at any time. The paper presents the new GUI functionalities developed for that purpose, the approach that we took for their design and how these fit in the overall TRAFIL architecture.

Humans utilise multiple communication channels in their social interactions and also information diffusion as well as the spread of influence are practically related with many contexts. Each such context (channel) may represent a different communication method or a different environment of a given person. This facilitates building multiple social networks, that are not independent. They share the same set of nodes connected with many links grounded on different layers - these networks are called multi-layered or multiplex social networks. The influence process may vary in these kinds of social networks depending on the network model, the level of influence for each layer and other factors such as the overlap of nodes and links across layers. In this paper, the influence processes in multi-layered social networks have been analysed showing that for almost all analysed network models, the success in convincing few more individuals may be crucial for the whole influence process. The results revealed that the process is not linear in terms of relation between the number of initially influenced individuals and the total number of influenced nodes. The linear threshold model has been utilized as a base influence model.

This paper presents MVEVE (Modular Visual Environment for Visual Effects), a visual programming environment for creating new visual effects. For intuitive visual programming, MVEVE has several high-level data types, e.g, Im-ageList and 3D ObjectList. Processing modules in MVEVE has input and output ports of these data types, and typically performs image/video processings. Users connect input and output ports among modules, and then create new visual effects easier than conventional textural programming. Sample effects of afterimages, speedlines, and particles are presented in the paper.

We experimentally demonstrate a novel method which allows deposition of solution-based soft-glass films (chalcogenide) inside the holes of commercially available solid and hollow core photonic crystal fiber (PCF). The transmission spectra are recorded using a supercontinuum source indicating ARROW type guidance in the solid core PCFs while initial results on deposition of soft glass films into the hollow core fiber is also reported. The proposed deposition method provides the ability to enhance significantly the nonlinearity in an silica PCF in a simple and cost-effective way. Multi-material deposition (in various layers) inside the holes of the PCF is experimentally feasible using the suggested approach.

Diffusion of information in social networks takes more and more attention from marketers. New methods and algorithms are constantly developed towards maximizing reach of the campaigns and increasing their effectiveness. One of the important research directions in this area is related to selecting initial nodes of the campaign to result with maximizing its effects represented as total number of infections. To achieve this goal, several strategies were developed and they are based on different network measures and other characteristics of users. The problem is that most of these strategies base on static network properties while typical online networks change over time and are sensitive to varying activity of users. In this work a novel strategy is proposed which is based on multiple measures with additional parameters related to nodes availability in time periods prior to the campaign. Presented results show that it is possible to compensate users with high network measures by others having high frequency of system usage, which, instead, may be easier or cheaper to acquire.

In this paper, an intelligent approach based on artificial immune systems (AIS) is proposed to perform the task of classification using fuzzy cognitive map learning. Fuzzy cognitive map is an approach to knowledge representation and inference including learning capabilities; it emphasizes the connections of concepts as basic units for storing knowledge, and the structure that represents the significance of system. One of the most useful aspects of the FCM is its prediction capability as a classification tool. Little research has been done on pattern classification using FCM approach. The proposed artificial immune algorithm inspired by theoretical immunology and observed immune functions, principles and models, was considered to learn FCM network providing a category after classification. Consequently, the proposed method provides an FCM learning methodology for pattern recognition. The proposed algorithm is implemented in a previous autism classification problem, as well as in some benchmark machine learning datasets to show its functionality.

Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs) are becoming more essential to wireless communications due to growing popularity of mobile devices. MANETs are also essential in Emergency Response situation where network information flow between deployed units is vital. In such cases voice and video transmission is essential to form a global view of the situation and decide on action. However, MANETs do not seem to effectively support multimedia applications and especially video transmission. In this work we evaluate the use of multiple interfaces and multiple channels for Video Transmission in Emergency Response Ad hoc Networks. We also evaluate the video transmission with rate adaptation. Aim of this paper is to tune multi-interfaces and multi-channels video transmission mechanisms in order to support better emerging situations and offer a solution to have acceptable transmission of the necessary video streams so that the control can get a complete overall picture of the situation and decide on the action to be taken. The simulation evaluation performed shows that multi-interfaces and multi-channels video transmission offers many advantages in Video Transmission in Emergency Response Ad hoc Networks.
