We introduce a Horn description logic called Horn-DL, which is strictly and essentially richer than Horn-scriptSscriptRscriptOscriptIscriptQ, while still has PTime data complexity. In comparison with Horn- scriptSscriptRscriptOscriptIscriptQ, Horn-DL additionally allows the universal role and assertions of the form irreflexive (s), ¬s(a, b), a ≠ b. More importantly, in contrast to all the well-known Horn fragments scriptEscriptL, DL-Lite, DLP, Horn-scriptSscriptHscriptIscriptQ, Horn- scriptSscriptRscriptOscriptIscriptQ of description logics, Horn-DL allows a form of the concept constructor "universal restriction" to appear at the left hand side of terminological inclusion axioms. Namely, a universal restriction can be used in such places in conjunction with the corresponding existential restriction. In the long version of this paper, we present the first algorithm with PTime data complexity for checking satisfiability of Horn-DL knowledge bases. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

We quantitatively investigate the performance of holographic data storage system with Spatial Quadrature Amplitude Modulation datapages in which intensity and phase modulations are combined. The phase-shift required for phase demodulation is embedded in the datapage. Root Mean Square Error of demodulated phase value and Symbol Error Rate are experimentally evaluated.

Cognitive impaired population face with innumerable problems in their daily life. Surprisingly, they are not provided with any help to perform those tasks for which they have difficulties. As a consequence, it is necessary to develop systems that allow those people to live independently and autonomously. Living in a technological era, people could take advantage of the available technology, being provided with some solutions to their needs. This paper presents a platform that assists users with remembering where their possessions are. Mainly, an object recognition process together with an intelligent scheduling applications are integrated in an Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) environment. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013.

A measurement of the Higgs boson mass is presented based on the combined data samples of the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the CERN LHC in the H→γγ and H→ZZ→4ℓ decay channels. The results are obtained from a simultaneous fit to the reconstructed invariant mass peaks in the two channels and for the two experiments. The measured masses from the individual channels and the two experiments are found to be consistent among themselves. The combined measured mass of the Higgs boson is mH=125.09±0.21 (stat)±0.11 (syst) GeV.

Nowadays, there are many methods for identifying people, but most common and probably the oldest one is identification based on face recognition. Even though for people this method is natural, for computers it is a very challenging and complex problem. This paper describes one the known approaches for face recognition, which uses principal component analysis to compare and recognize faces. Obviously, a before face is recognized, it has to be detected. For process of detection, method based on Haar features is used.

Workflow management systems are widely used to solve scientific problems as they enable orchestration of remote and lo- cal services such as database queries, job submission and running an application. To extend the role that workflow systems play in data-intensive science, we propose a solution that integrates WMS and MapReduce model. In this paper, we discuss possible solution of combining MapReduce and workflow applications, we describe the implementation of chosen solution based on metaprogramming approach in Ruby programming language and evaluate it with an example of word count application.

Orthography system development process is vital to help in the language documentation. Language documentation is useful to preserve the indigenous languages. There are many approaches that had been taken by the linguists to develop the orthography system. Unfortunately, the method that is used by the linguists to develop the orthography system is not feasible. As the linguists need to travel to the specific areas to collect and identify requirements of the languages, the whole process would be cumbersome. Thus, computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) had been chosen to apply in the orthography system development process. The purpose of applying CSCW into the orthography system development process is to use Information and Communication technology (ICTs) to engage the linguists working together with the indigenous community.

Recognizing the various aliases of an entity is a critical task for many applications, including Web search, recommendation system, and e-discovery. The goal of this paper is to accurately identify entity aliases, especially the long tail ones in the unstructured data. Our solution GRIAS (abbr. for a Graph-based framework for discovering entity Aliases) is motivated by the entity relationships collected from both the structured and unstructured data. These relationships help to build an entity-relation graph, and the graph-based similarity is calculated between an entity and its alias candidates which are first chosen by our proposed candidate selection method. Extensive experimental results on two real-world datasets demonstrate both the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed framework.

The fairness aspect on handling user data flows in modern broadband telecommunication networks is of paramount importance since it strongly affects the quality of the provided services. In this work, the fairness provisioning is investigated in a competitive telecommunication field such as the passive optical networks (PONs). Intending to resolve unequal resource allocation in the downstream data delivery, a fair bandwidth assignment scheme is devised and evaluated. The Max-Min fairness concept is applied in order to determine the best effort (BE) bandwidth allocation of each optical network unit (ONU) in the optical line terminal (OLT) side. Simulation results indicate the benefits of utilizing the proposed resource allocation technique in terms of fair bandwidth distribution.
