Transmitting compactly represented geometry of a dynamic scene from a sender can enable a multitude of 3D imaging functionalities at a receiver, such as synthesis of virtual images from freely chosen viewpoints via depth-image-based rendering (DIBR). While depth maps can now be readily captured using inexpensive depth sensors, they are often corrupted by non-negligible acquisition noise. In this paper, we derive 3D surfaces of a dynamic scene from noise-corrupted depth maps in a rate-distortion (RD) optimal manner. Specifically, unlike previous work that finds the most likely (e.g., maximum likelihood) 3D surface from noisy observations regardless of representation size, we judiciously search for the best fitting (i.e., minimum distortion) 3D surface subject to a bitrate constraint. Our RD-optimal solution reduces to the maximum likelihood solution as the rate constraint is loosened. Using the MVC codec for compression of multiview depth video and MPEG free viewpoint test sequences as input, experimental results show that RD-optimized 3D reconstructions computed by our algorithm outperform unprocessed depth maps by up to 2:42dB in PSNR of synthesized virtual views at the decoder for the same bitrate.

Fall detection receives significant attention in the field of preventive medicine, wellness provision and assisted living, especially for the elderly. As a result, numerous commercial fall detection systems exist to date and most of them use accelerometers and/ or gyroscopes attached on a person's body as primary signal sources. These systems use either discrete sensors as part of a product designed specifically for this task or sensors that are embedded in mobile devices such as smartphones. The latter approach has the advantage of offering well tested and widely available communication services, e.g. for calling emergency if necessary, when someone has fallen. Apparently, automatic fall detection will continue to evolve in the following years. The aim of this work is to introduce a human activity dataset that will be helpful in testing new methods, as well as performing objective comparisons between different algorithms for fall detection and activity recognition, based on inertial-sensor data from smartphones. The dataset contains signals recorded from the accelerometer and gyroscope sensors of a latest technology smartphone for four different falls and nine different activities of daily living. Using this dataset, the results of an initial evaluation of three fall detection algorithms are finally presented.

Real-time task scheduling becomes even more challenging with the emerging of island-based multi-core architecture, where the local memory module of an island offers shorter access time than the global memory module does. With such a popular architecture design in mind, this paper exploits real-time task scheduling over island-based homogeneous cores with local and global memory pools. Joint considerations of real-time scheduling and memory allocation are presented to efficiently use the computing and memory resources. A polynomial-time algorithm with an asymptotic 4-approximation bound is proposed to minimize the number of needed islands to successfully schedule tasks. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, 82 benchmarks from the MRTC, MediaBench, UTDSP, NetBench, and DSPstone benchmark suites were profiled by a worst-case-execution-time analyzer aiT and included in the experiments.

In this paper we address the problem of balancing the processing load of MapReduce tasks running on heterogeneous clusters, i.e., clusters composed of nodes with different capacities and update cycles. We present a fully decentralized algorithm, based on ratio consensus, where each mapper decides the amount of workload data to handle for a single user job using only job specific local information, i.e., information that can be collected from directly connected neighboring mappers, regarding their current workload usage and capacity. In contrast to other algorithms in the literature, the proposed algorithm can be deployed in heterogeneous clusters and can operate asynchronously in both directed and undirected communication topologies. The performance of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated via simulation experiments on large-scale strongly connected topologies.

Research is emerging on how end users can correct mistakes their intelligent agents make, but before users can correctly "debug" an intelligent agent, they need some degree of understanding of how it works. In this paper we consider ways intelligent agents should explain themselves to end users, especially focusing on how the soundness and completeness of the explanations impacts the fidelity of end users' mental models. Our findings suggest that completeness is more important than soundness: increasing completeness via certain information types helped participants' mental models and, surprisingly, their perception of the cost/benefit tradeoff of attending to the explanations. We also found that oversimplification, as per many commercial agents, can be a problem: when soundness was very low, participants experienced more mental demand and lost trust in the explanations, thereby reducing the likelihood that users will pay attention to such explanations at all.

This paper reports on a search for narrow resonances in diboson production in the $$\mathrm {\ell \ell }q\bar{q}$$ final state using $$pp$$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $$20$$ fb $$^{-1}$$ collected at $$\sqrt{s}=8$$ TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess of data events over the Standard Model expectation is observed. Upper limits at the 95 % confidence level are set on the production cross section times branching ratio for Kaluza–Klein gravitons predicted by the Randall–Sundrum model and for Extended Gauge Model $$W^\prime $$ bosons. These results lead to the exclusion of mass values below 740 and 1590 GeV for the graviton and $$W^\prime $$ boson respectively.
