Human Gesture Recognition (HGR) has become an increasingly important research area in recent years, driven by the need for more natural and intuitive ways of interacting with machines. Wearable smart devices, such as smartwatches, smart wristbands, and other wrist-worn devices have the potential to enable accurate and efficient gesture recognition in real-world settings. However, equivalent problems, such as object detection in computer vision and audio identification in audio analysis, have obtained enormous advantages from comprehensive datasets over the last years, for instance, ImageNet and AudioSet, accordingly. This paper proposes the structure and the creation of a preliminary version of GestureSet, an HGR large-scale multitask dataset, which includes manually annotated data of gesture events that were collected from wrist-worn devices. In particular, it proposes a hierarchy abstraction schema for the proper dataset structure and instantiates the basis of the dataset through the first HGR task that is related to the collection and annotation of gestures related to allergic rhinitis identification. Thus, through this preliminary version, we describe how the proper dataset structure is divided into different groups, each one including sessions, individual gestures, and pilot data that could be used for evaluating the learning algorithms' performance in real-world scenarios. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt that envisions a unified dataset for various HGR tasks that can find applications in different domains. Our vision, specifically, is for this work to set the basis for the dataset enrichment in a wide range of various tasks, and its data to be used in multiple learning and identification settings, providing circularity in different domains, and enabling reproducibility of the dataset's gestures events.

Color-Name Aware Optimization to Enhance the Perception of Transparent Overlapped Charts

Transparency is commonly utilized in visualizations to overlay color-coded histograms or sets, thereby facilitating the visual comparison of categorical data. However, these charts often suffer from significant overlap between objects, resulting in substantial color interactions. Existing color blending models struggle in these scenarios, frequently leading to ambiguous color mappings and the introduction of false colors. To address these challenges, we propose an automated approach for generating optimal color encodings to enhance the perception of translucent charts. Our method harnesses color nameability to maximize the association between composite colors and their respective class labels. We introduce a color-name aware (CNA) optimization framework that generates maximally coherent color assignments and transparency settings while ensuring perceptual discriminability for all segments in the visualization. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our technique through crowdsourced experiments with composite histograms, showing how our technique can significantly outperform both standard and visualization-specific color blending models. Furthermore, we illustrate how our approach can be generalized to other visualizations, including parallel coordinates and Venn diagrams. We provide an open-source implementation of our technique as a web-based tool. © 1995-2012 IEEE.

Cervical cancer is one of the most common causes of death among women worldwide. However, this fatal disease can be treated, and the mortality rate can be decreased if detected at an early stage. The Papanicolaou test is the gold standard for screening cervical cancer patients. However, the process of manual inspection is tedious and subject to manual errors. Thus, computer-based automatic screening is considered a viable alternative. To this end, in the present work, we have developed a novel system for classifying cervical cancer images as either normal or malignant. We have used the Herlev dataset in this study, which is the standard Pap smear image benchmark dataset. The proposed framework uses multiple base deep learning frameworks, namely Vision Transformer, Xception, VGG-19, VGG-16, and ResNet-101, for classification. Further, we have introduced a novel reward-based weighing technique to decide the weights of individual classifiers, which are, in turn, used to make decisions about the final class label of an input image using the weighted average technique. The proposed framework achieves an overall accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and AUC of 96%, 94%, 92%, 93%, and 94%, respectively, for the binary classification task that is normal vs. malignant. An elaborate study of the performance achieved by our proposed framework on the Herlev dataset shows it to be both robust and effective for the Pap smear image classification task. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Semantic Data Representation for Explainable Windows Malware Detection Models

Ontologies are a standard tool for creating semantic schemata in many knowledge intensive domains of human interest. They are becoming increasingly important also in the areas that have been until very recently dominated by subsymbolic knowledge representation and machine-learning (ML) based data processing. One such area is information security, and specifically, malware detection. We thus propose PE Malware Ontology that offers a reusable semantic schema for Portable Executable (PE – the Windows binary format) malware files. This ontology is inspired by the structure of the EMBER dataset, which focuses on the static malware analysis of PE files. With this proposal, we hope to provide a unified semantic representation for the existing and future PE-malware datasets and facilitate the application of symbolic, neuro-symbolic, or otherwise explainable approaches in the PE-malware-detection domain, which may produce interpretable results described by the terms defined in our ontology. In addition, we also publish semantically treated EMBER data, including fractional datasets, to support the reproducibility of experiments on EMBER. We supplement our work with a preliminary case study, conducted using concept learning, to show the general feasibility of our approach. While we were not able to match the precision of the state-of-the-art ML tools, the learned malware discriminators were interesting and highly interpretable. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. The adoption of an innovative educational strategy will aid in the creation of new technology and creative solutions even before students begin their studies. This research proposes the assessment of banking and financial services using AI to monitor how banks apply AI approaches and the feedback they receive from customers. In order to better track, anticipate, and react to customer behavior, the financial information generated by the growing utilization of digital pay and banking can be mined by banks and other financial institutions. Based on research, secondary sources are reviewed to ascertain the data used in banking and financial services. A methodical survey is designed to gather the main information clients have regarding AI applications. The study is that private banks and other financial institutions use a variety of artificial intelligence (AI) services to better serve their clients and ensure that they are happy with their financial services, as some clients are not happy with banking services. Additionally, the results indicated that clients would be more committed to banking and financial services representatives by providing creative preparation for the advancement of AI practices in the workplace. © The Author(s).

In this paper the problem of automatic defects detection in thin film transistor is considered in order to increase the efficiency of electronic devices. An effective approach based on defect pattern recognition in organic transistor is developed using the Radon transform. The adopted design and technology in Pentacene organic thin-film transistor exhibits two interdigitated Archimedean spirals pattern. In the conducted experiments, the images acquisition is performed with a microscope camera to capture the various defects of surface morphology on the top of the examined transistors. The defects detection is obtained by using the Radon transform on each channel (R,G,B) of these images. © 2023 IEEE.

In this work, we propose a novel method for generating inter-lingual document representations using neural network concept compression. The presented approach is intended to improve the quality of content-based multilingual document recommendation and information retrieval systems by creating a language-independent representation. The main idea is to use mappings to align monolingual representation spaces, using concept compression, to create inter-lingual representations. The proposed approach outperforms traditional cross-lingual retrieval and recommendations methods in experiments conducted on JRC-Acquis and EU bookshop multilingual corpora. This paper investigates the advancement of magnetic induction-based heart and respiration rate sensing by actively controlling the coil current. This is realized through the implementation of a current-starved inverter mechanism. Experiments show a notable level of accuracy of the proposed circuit in measuring heart and respiration activity when compared to a reference sensor. The direct manipulation of current levels was found to have a direct impact on the signal strength. Incrementing the overall current within the proposed circuit from 60 mA to 100 mA resulted in an augmentation of the output amplitude of the heart rate signal from 8.5 mV to 27 mV, accompanied by a marginal enhancement in beat-to-beat interval accuracy. Moreover, the proposed sensor demonstrates noteworthy precision in monitoring the respiratory rate when compared with the reference sensor under different current values, exhibiting the same trend in signal strength. This finding offers valuable insight for the development of future power-optimized magnetic induction sensors with enhanced robustness.
