Residential sectors using energy mainly though lighting and HV AC (Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning) have become a significant consumer of world energy and it is expected to grow especially with the trend of increasing smart homes. To provide an optimum, accurate and reliable electricity distribution, load prediction is a prerequisite policy and operational implementation. Smart homes with the use of various sensors create big data that gives a favorable opportunity for developing data-driven energy usage prediction models. In this paper, a novel regression-based ensemble prediction model with inbuilt automated optimization for parameters is proposed to predict the demand of electricity. The model explains the 0.998 correlation between the features and their label, and achieved root mean squared error (RMSE) and Normalized Absolute Error as low as 5.508 and 0.0508 respectively. We have also proposed a novel data-driven classification of the energy usage by unsupervised learning through clustering. © 2020 IEEE.

The education industry have evolved to meet the expectations of current technological trend. The field of mechanical engineering involves the study, design, development, construction, and testing of tools, engines, and machines. One of the critical equipment in the area of power plant engineering is the turbine, which are used to generate power. Students are taught to understand the drawings of these turbines through books or videos and occasionally visit the power plant site. This approach may not be appealing to the digital natives as they prefer to use technology to touch, feel and see the aspects of the turbine at any given time. The lack of engagement, shrinking attention span and obsession with digital devices amongst the younger generation have caused educators to experiment with various means of teaching techniques in ensuring that knowledge is successfully imparted. Hence, this paper provide results of a pilot study on a usability evaluation conducted on a group of undergraduate students to analyze the usability of a virtual reality (VR) application using the System Usability Scale (SUS) instrument. The study also aims to find out if there are any significant differences among gender and computer gamers in using the VR tool. Results indicate that the VR application requires further enhancement in terms of self-learning and interaction familiarity. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

This paper reviews privacy-preserving techniques in data analytics. Data analytics is a concept of processing raw data and analysing the output for various beneficial reasons. There are four types of data analytics stated in this paper, those are descriptive analytics, diagnostic analytics, predictive analytics, and prescriptive analytics. Data itself contains unstructured, semi-structured and structured data. We compare the privacy-preserving techniques in data analytics to see whether the techniques are suitable or unsuitable to be applied in data analytics. © 2021 IEEE.

Critical infrastructure systems consist of physical and cyber assets that are essential to the operation of the economy and the government. As one of the most important critical infrastructures worldwide, the water sector has become vulnerable to new risks in the form of cyber threats that can severely impact public health, and are difficult to detect. A water grid system (WGS) plays an important role in guarding the business processes of the water sector against possible threats and risks. Threat modeling can be used to analyze threats to the WGS. It is applied to identify points of access to the assets and devices of the system, classify threats to them, assess the risks posed by them, and suggest mitigation measures. Each threat is classified based on its type according to the STRIDE methodology, and the results of the threat classification can be used to assess the level of risk by using the DREAD methodology. This yields a risk rating for each threat that can be used to devise mitigation measures to minimize the risk posed by it. Through the threat modeling stage, it is known that the high-risk threats on WGSs are tampering with a risk score of 14, denial of service threats with a risk score of 13, and repudiation threats with a risk score of 12. The results of the ranking are used to formulate recommendations in the form of mitigation controls against these threats. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Efforts to curb household waste in Malaysia have been unsatisfactory despite numerous policies and regulations. With technological advancements, participation rates can be increased in communities if utilized. This study looks at the current e-hailing waste management technology being used in Malaysian’s solid waste management, especially mobile applications usage. Additionally, the study investigates factors that can influence Malaysians to adopt and use e-hailing waste management technology in order to increase recycling participation rates in communities. A survey was carried out with recycling practitioners in Kuala Lumpur to identify their recycling interests, challenges faced while recycling and opinion on e-hailing waste management service. The data was analyzed using a descriptive statistical and thematic analysis methodology and findings from the study showed that the respondents were keen on reducing waste in communities. Based on findings, a design framework was established to boost participation rates and improve awareness in Malaysian communities. Therefore, in order to reduce household waste, it is advised that technologies such as e-hailing waste management be used to channel recyclable household waste to proper destination and cut off landfill dumping. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Given that mental stress issue is becoming a big concern in today’s society, it is important to highlight available alternatives that may help in reducing stress. One of the options available is virtual reality-based therapy (VR-based therapy). Previous studies conducted show that VR-based therapy has promising results in reducing stress and inducing relaxation. However, most of the studies were only focusing on the effectiveness of the system without taking into consideration the elements that should be included while designing its virtual environment. Therefore, this study aims to identify the possible design elements that should be taken into consideration when designing a virtual environment for a VR-based stress therapy system. An existing system review consisted of system demonstration and interview session was conducted with 12 random participants. During the review, the users were required to use an existing VR-based system and provide their feedback and comments during a short interview session that follows. Based on the review, eight design elements were identified, which were then grouped into five themes;visual attraction, environment setting, user comfort, interaction and navigation. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

Virtual reality (VR) based stress therapy system refers to a system that applies virtual reality technology in a stress therapy session aiming to reduce mental stress. Previous studies conducted found that the system is effective in reducing stress. However, most of the studies done only aimed to measure the effectiveness of the system in reducing stress without having a guideline on how to design the virtual environment. Therefore, this paper aim to identify potential factors and its elements that must be considered when designing a virtual environment for a VR- based stress therapy application. Systematic literature review technique was employed as a guideline to search for relevant studies. The search was conducted using pre-defined keywords. Potential studies were filtered three times before it was finalised. After the selection process, the chosen studies were reviewed and important data that answers this study’s two research questions were extracted for analysis purposes. Ten studies were found to fulfil the inclusion criteria and answer all the research questions. From the review conducted, four factors were identified as aspects that should be considered when designing a virtual environment for a VR-based stress therapy application. The increase in Malaysia’s energy demand has resulted in the rise of electricity generation. Specific policies and measures are therefore put in place to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels. The reduction is possible with the widespread adoption of distributed energy resources (DERs) technologies that produce electricity from renewable energy sources. With the increase of DERs and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), more data need to be managed. DERs data come from various sources in different formats, making data management process more complex. The technical challenges faced by the utility companies are in terms of data integration, data interoperability and data model. The non-technical challenges include business model, access right and boundary, and data security and privacy. The aim of this research is therefore to find a wholesome solution to these challenges. To do that, DERs data management from six countries have been analyzed and compared. Taking the cue from the successful endeavors of the selected countries, this paper proposes the development of an energy datahub to address the challenges and provides recommendations in moving forward. A datahub is a central repository, which allows all DERs data to be stored, structured and shared with other systems. Datahub can be utilized to coordinate and manage the processes between complex data transactions, electricity suppliers and grid companies. Good data management can be ensured in datahub by implementing good data governance. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Finding information through search engines from large data repositories becomes more complicated due to three things;the growth and the size of the Web, insufficient relevancy of most of the search results, and the need to sort out the more relevant results from less relevant results. For more than a decade, many great methods and tools for visualization in faceted search engines have been developed and literature about them published in conference proceedings and journals. However, there are still rooms for improvement. To take up this, we have reviewed many visualizations based faceted search and performed our research especially on information exploration on the Web with the purpose of finding a better way to address visualization in faceted search. In this research, we discuss some issues among many, such as pre-processing and acquisition of search results that need to be taken into consideration in the development of a visualization based faceted search. The main contribution of this paper is a report of the review of past information on visualization-based faceted search tools and the mechanisms for enhancing filters to reduce down the results of the search process. © 2020 IEEE.

Different approaches for measuring the quality of scientific articles are considered. Difficulties and problems associated with using Science Citation Index (SCI) as well as various methods to improve it are discussed. Optimal methods for collective expertise are proposed. The advantages of the linguistic approach to the problem are discussed. A specific method for estimating the information content of scientific texts based of the linguistic approach is presented. The method can measure "idea-based" influence and how ideas propagate between articles. Idea is presented very precisely as a set of phrases with similar meaning. Phrases representing the ideas in the texts of the articles form together a system of implicit references/links. Implicit link is a reference to the author or his ideas in the text. Bibliometric measures which in addition to bibliographic references also take into account the implicit links can more accurately measure scientific impact and the quality of the articles. © 2019 ICAI 2015 - WORLDCOMP 2015.
