This paper presents a proposal of Brain Computer Interface (BCI) to command an autonomous car. This BCI is based on the paradigm of visual evoked potentials (VEP) and event-related desynchronization (ERD). A menu interface is presented to the user with disabilities in order he/she can choose a destination for the autonomous car. The selection of the final destination is performed using visual stimuli flickering at different frequencies, analyzed through the analysis of brain signals present at the occipital region of the user's scalp. The power spectrum of these signals is then obtained, in order to get the frequency of the visual stimulation. Preliminary tests were performed with healthy users and people with disabilities, which reached an average success rate above 90%. The proposed system is also capable of turning on/off the stimuli, thus reducing the fatigue associated with particular visual stimuli.

Manifestations of cognitive and neurobehavioral disorders such as repetitive movements, impaired communication and social interaction level characterize Autism Spectrum Disorder - ASD, a condition of unknown etiology and still without cure. Currently, many researches integrate robotics to the treatment of ASD with varied functions that allow interaction with children with this disorder. Therefore, evaluation criteria become important to analyze the efficiency the use of robotics in this interaction. The methods here proposed are Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS), System Usability Scale (SUS) and Fitts' Law. The use of such methods of evaluation allows transpose qualitative assessments into quantitative, making the work more robust and reliable.

In this work a novel resistorless sub-bandgap voltage reference (BGR) is introduced. It is a self-biased and small area topology that works in the nano-ampere current consumption range, and under 1 V of power supply. The analytical behavior of the circuit is described, and simulation results for a standard 0.18 μm CMOS process are analysed. A reference voltage of 479 mV is demonstrated, with a temperature coefficient of 8.79 ppm/oC for the 0 to 125 °C range, while the power consumption of the whole circuit is 4.86 nW under a 0.9 V power supply at 27 oC. The estimated silicon area is 0.0012 mm2. © 2014 IEEE.

Quality of sleep greatly affects a person's physiological well-being. Traditional sleep monitoring systems are expensive in cost and intrusive enough that they disturb the natural sleep of clinical patients. In our previous work, we proposed a non-intrusive sleep monitoring system to first record depth video in real-time, then offline analyze recorded depth data to track a patient's chest and abdomen movements over time. Detection of abnormal breathing is then interpreted as episodes of apnoea or hypopnoea. Leveraging on recent advances in graph signal processing (GSP), in this paper we propose two new additions to further improve our sleep monitoring system. First, temporal denoising is performed using a block motion vector smoothness prior expressed in the graph-signal domain, so that unwanted temporal flickering can be removed. Second, a graph-based event classification scheme is proposed, so that detection of apnoea / hypopnoea can be performed accurately and robustly. Experimental results show first that graph-based temporal denoising scheme outperforms an implementation of temporal median filter in terms of flicker removal. Second, we show that our graph-based event classification scheme is noticeably more robust to errors in training data than two conventional implementations of support vector machine (SVM).

In the FANTOM5 project, transcription initiation events across the human and mouse genomes were mapped at a single base-pair resolution and their frequencies were monitored by CAGE (Cap Analysis of Gene Expression) coupled with single-molecule sequencing. Approximately three thousands of samples, consisting of a variety of primary cells, tissues, cell lines, and time series samples during cell activation and development, were subjected to a uniform pipeline of CAGE data production. The analysis pipeline started by measuring RNA extracts to assess their quality, and continued to CAGE library production by using a robotic or a manual workflow, single molecule sequencing, and computational processing to generate frequencies of transcription initiation. Resulting data represents the consequence of transcriptional regulation in each analyzed state of mammalian cells. Non-overlapping peaks over the CAGE profiles, approximately 200,000 and 150,000 peaks for the human and mouse genomes, were identified and annotated to provide precise location of known promoters as well as novel ones, and to quantify their activities.

A rapid antibiotic susceptibility test (AST) is desperately needed in clinical settings for fast and appropriate antibiotic administration. Traditional ASTs, which rely on cell culture, are not suitable for urgent cases of bacterial infection and antibiotic resistance owing to their relatively long test times. Here, we describe a novel AST called single-cell morphological analysis (SCMA) that can determine antimicrobial susceptibility by automatically analyzing and categorizing morphological changes in single bacterial cells under various antimicrobial conditions. The SCMA was tested with four Clinical and Laboratory Standards institute standard bacterial strains and 189 clinical samples from hospitals. The results were compared with the gold standard broth microdilution test. The SCMA results were obtained in less than 4 hours with 91.5% categorical agreement and 6.51% minor, 2.56% major, and 1.49% very major discrepancies. Thus, SCMA provides rapid and accurate antimicrobial susceptibility data.

Image guidance can provide surgeons with valuable contextual information during a medical intervention. Often, image guidance systems require considerable infrastructure, setup-time, and operator experience to be utilized. Certain procedures performed at bedside are susceptible to navigational errors that can lead to complications. We present an application for mobile devices that can provide image guidance using augmented reality to assist in performing neurosurgical tasks. A methodology is outlined that evaluates this mode of visualization from the standpoint of perceptual localization, depth estimation, and pointing performance, in scenarios derived from a neurosurgical targeting task. By measuring user variability and speed we can report objective metrics of performance for our augmented reality guidance system.© 2014 The authors and IOS Press. All rights reserved.

A search for heavy pseudoscalar (A) and scalar (H) Higgs bosons decaying into a top quark pair (tt¯) has been performed with 20.3 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at a center-of-mass energy s=8 TeV. Interference effects between the signal process and standard model tt¯ production, which are expected to distort the signal shape from a single peak to a peak-dip structure, are taken into account. No significant deviation from the standard model prediction is observed in the tt¯ invariant mass spectrum in final states with an electron or muon, large missing transverse momentum, and at least four jets. The results are interpreted within the context of a type-II two-Higgs-doublet model. Exclusion limits on the signal strength are derived as a function of the mass mA/H and the ratio of the vacuum expectation values of the two Higgs fields, tanβ, for mA/H>500 GeV.

Several extensions of the standard model predict associated production of dark-matter particles with a Higgs boson. Such processes are searched for in final states with missing transverse momentum and a Higgs boson decaying to a bb¯ pair with the ATLAS detector using 36.1 fb−1 of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC. The observed data are in agreement with the standard model predictions and limits are placed on the associated production of dark-matter particles and a Higgs boson.
