A way to deal with the variations in the link quality of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) is the use of strategies for Dynamic Channel Allocation (DCA). The first step to perform DCA is estimating the channel quality, so that the network nodes can decide if a channel change is needed, and the best channel to be used. This paper proposes a distributed approach with nodes dedicated to monitor channel quality, by using the Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) and the Link Quality Indicator (LQI) to identify low quality channels. This approach is acceptable in industrial WSN, since the network deployment can be performed with adequate planning. Furthermore, the sensor nodes do not need to stop their operation for monitoring the channel quality. As a first step, experiments were performed in a real industrial environment to identify the relation between RSSI and LQI traces, and the Packet Error Rate for different channels, by using IEEE 802.15.4 radios operating in the 2.4 GHz band. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper presents an application of the multilayer control scheme to guide a formation of three unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in trajectory tracking missions. In such case, each part of the formation control problem is dealt by an individual layer, which is independent module dealing with a specific part of the navigation problem. These layers are responsible to generate the desired path of the formation, to provide the desired posture of the robots, and to establish the control signal of each robot to reach their desired positions. The formation controller here introduced is able to coordinate the robots to the desired formation, including the possibility of time-varying position and/or shape, while a nonlinear underactuated controller previously proposed is responsible to guide the UAVs to their desired positions. The stability analysis of the closed-loop system is demonstrated in the sense of Lyapunov, resulting that the formation errors are ultimately bounded. Finally, simulation results for a group of three quadrotors are presented and discussed to validate the proposed model and controller.

This paper presents an ac-dc-ac reversible nine-phase machine drive system. The grid side converter is composed of Y-connected single-phase bridges. As the machine is composed of three three-phase groups, a three-leg converters are connected separately to each group. The topology does not make use of input isolation transformers and reduces the power processed by converter switches when compared to that of conventional two-level converter. Moreover, harmonic distortion in voltages generated by the grid side converter is reduced when compared to conventional two-level converter. The model and the control strategy have been developed. Simulation and experimental results are also presented. © 2014 IEEE.

Purpose: A calibrationless parallel imaging reconstruction method, termed simultaneous autocalibrating and k-space estimation (SAKE), is presented. It is a data-driven, coil-by-coil reconstruction method that does not require a separate calibration step for estimating coil sensitivity information. Methods: In SAKE, an undersampled, multichannel dataset is structured into a single data matrix. The reconstruction is then formulated as a structured low-rank matrix completion problem. An iterative solution that implements a projection-ontosets algorithm with singular value thresholding is described. Results: Reconstruction results are demonstrated for retrospectively and prospectively undersampled, multichannel Cartesian data having no calibration signals. Additionally, non-Cartesian data reconstruction is presented. Finally, improved image quality is demonstrated by combining SAKE with wavelet-based compressed sensing. Conclusion: Because estimation of coil sensitivity information is not needed, the proposed method could potentially benefit MR applications where acquiring accurate calibration data is limiting or not possible at all. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

As interaction between human and computer continues to develop to the most natural form possible, it becomes more and more urgent to incorporate emotion in the equation. The field continues to develop, yet exploration of the subject in Indonesian is still very lacking. This paper presents the first study of emotion recognition in Indonesian, including the construction of the first emotionally colored speech corpus in the language, and the building of an emotion classifier through an optimized machine learning process. We construct our corpus using television talk show recordings in various topics of discussion, yielding colorful emotional utterances. In our machine learning experiment, we employ the support vector machine (SVM) algorithm with feature selection and parameter optimization to ensure the best resulting model possible. Evaluation of the experiment result shows recognition accuracy of 68.31% at best.

Static resistance measurement of circuit breakers has been a crucial technique to assess the state of contacts, supporting maintenance procedures. However, in many cases, the obtained results do not provide accurate data for correct diagnosis, since the test examines only the main contact. This article discusses the application of the contact dynamic resistance measurement (DRM) in the evaluation of main and arcing contacts. The DRM is a contact resistance test, and the resistance is determined during the opening of contacts, analyzing the main and arcing contacts. The research objective is to get the DRM parameters that can assist in the contacts diagnosis. The obtained results indicate that DRM has presented more qualitative parameters than the static resistance test in the evaluation of contacts. The resistance tests were performed applying a direct current with 300 A of ***.

Vehicular networks will play an important role in future smart cities. Connected vehicles will be able to provide entertainment content to their users in order to make traffic situations more enjoyable. However, the amount of bandwidth available to the vehicles may not be enough to satisfy all of them. In this case, we can say that a conflict of interest occurred and then must the solved as fair as possible. In this work, we propose a solution to solve this kind of collective conflict. Our solution balances users' satisfaction with resources consumption as it is capable of choosing the most adequate resolution algorithm based on the current application's situation. The results showed that with our solution it was possible to achieve adequate satisfaction levels, with low response time and controlled network usage.

In this work a novel resistorless sub-bandgap voltage reference (BGR) is introduced. It is a self-biased and small area topology that works in the nano-ampere current consumption range, and under 1 V of power supply. The analytical behavior of the circuit is described, and simulation results for a standard 0.18 μm CMOS process are analysed. A reference voltage of 479 mV is demonstrated, with a temperature coefficient of 8.79 ppm/°C for the 0 to 125°C range, while the power consumption of the whole circuit is 4.86 nW under a 0.9 V power supply at 27 o C. The estimated silicon area is 0.0012 mm 2 .

Network interfaces are present in a variety of battery powered computer systems, such as notebooks, ultrabooks, tablets and mobile phones. Considering that the battery life is still a constraint, there are opportunities for power management by reducing the power consumption of idle network interfaces. In this work, a dynamic timeout power policy for network interfaces is presented, incorporating workload estimation and a problem optimization at runtime, thus providing power savings and suitable performance.

A novel parallel Remote Center of Motion (RCM) mechanism is proposed for a surgical robot designed to perform minimally invasive needle-based interventions for lung cancer diagnosis and treatment. The proposed robot provides four degrees of freedom (DOFs) to orient and move a surgical needle within a spherical coordinate system. The RCM is beneath the skin surface to minimize the invasiveness of the surgical procedure while providing the required workspace. This compact, patient-mounted robot benefits from a design capable of measuring the pure interaction forces between the needle and the tissue. In this paper, the mechanism design and its specifications are described. The kinematic analysis is presented and isotropy of the mechanism for targeting tumors is studied. Finally, the performance of the proposed robot is evaluated experimentally.
