A search is presented for pair production of a new heavy quark (Q) that decays into a W boson and a light quark (q) in the final state where one W boson decays leptonically (to an electron or muon plus a neutrino) and the other W boson decays hadronically. The analysis is performed using an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1 of pp collisions at s=8 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. No evidence of QQ¯ production is observed. New chiral quarks with masses below 690 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming BR(Q→Wq)=1. Results are also interpreted in the context of vectorlike quark models, resulting in the limits on the mass of a vectorlike quark in the two-dimensional plane of BR(Q→Wq) versus BR(Q→Hq).

Chromosomal aberrations and somatic mutations constitute key elements of the pathogenesis of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), a clonal hematologic malignancy characterized by cytopenias, a dysplastic bone marrow and propensity to clonal evolution. Next generation sequencing (NGS) enables definition of somatic mutational patterns and clonal architecture as a discovery platform, and for clinical *** systematically applied NGS to 707 cases of MDS and MDS-related disorders. 205 cases (low-risk MDS: N=78, high-risk MDS: N=42, MDS/MPN: N=48 and sAML: N=37) were tested by whole exome sequencing (WES). For validation in an additional 502 patients (low-risk MDS: N=192, high-risk MDS: N=104, MDS/MPN: N=111 and sAML: N=95), targeted deep NGS was applied for 60 index genes which were most commonly affected in the cohort analyzed by WES. For NGS data analysis a statistical pipeline was developed to focus on: i) identification of the most relevant somatic mutations, and ii) minimization of false positive results. We studied serial samples from 21 exemplary informative patients. We also compared somatic mutational patterns to those seen in primary AML TCGA cohort (N=201). Given the size of the cohort, there was, for example, a 87% chance of seeing mutations at a frequency of 1% and a 98% of seeing those with a frequency of 2%. While focusing on the most common events, we observed 1117 somatic mutations in 199 genes. The 88 genes mutated mutated in >1% of cases with MDS carried 388 mutations in MDS+sAML (2.5/case), 128 in MDS/MPN (2.7/case) and 398 in pAML (2.0/case). The average number of mutations per case increased during progression (2.2 in lower-risk, 2.8 in higher-risk MDS, 3.4 in sAML). In MDS, the 30 most frequently affected genes were present at least once in 70% of patients. The 30 most frequently mutated genes in MDS/MPN were mutated in 82% of patients. The off-state breakdown voltage reached 680 V,and the specific on-resistance was 8.2Ω·mm^2.

A search for the decays of the Higgs and Z bosons to J/ψγ and ϒ(nS)γ (n=1,2,3) is performed with pp collision data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to 20.3 fb−1 collected at s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess of events is observed above expected backgrounds and 95% C.L. upper limits are placed on the branching fractions. In the J/ψγ final state the limits are 1.5×10−3 and 2.6×10−6 for the Higgs and Z boson decays, respectively, while in the ϒ(1S,2S,3S)γ final states the limits are (1.3,1.9,1.3)×10−3 and (3.4,6.5,5.4)×10−6, respectively.

This paper concerns the problem of optimal switching control in voltage converter circuits, where the objective is to minimize a cost-performance function comprised of the sum of a tracking-related measure and the switching energy. Most of the existing approaches to optimal switching are based on continuous-parameter optimization and optimal control techniques, which are mostly suitable to continuous-parameter functions such as tracking-related performance metrics. On the other hand, the switching-energy cost performance is inherently a discontinuous function dependent on the number of switchings, and hence its inclusion in the problem often is done in ad-hoc ways. This paper explores a systematic approach to optimizing performance - energy tradeoffs by extending an algorithm for optimizing tracking, developed by the authors, to include the energy performance via an averaging technique. The problem is posed in the setting of Pulse Width Modulation, and the controlled variables are the cycle time and duty ratios at each cycle. Extensive simulation results suggest the potential generality of the proposed approach. © 2012 IFAC.

We created an online development environment, specifically for educational robotics applications, in which it is possible to register programming languages associated with different robotic platforms, so that the user program a robot using the registered language or the language R-Educ, developed for teaching programming. To validate the platform, we conducted a series of tests divided into six steps to verify that the complete cycle was satisfied - registering a language, program in R-Educ, compile to the registered language, compile to machine code and send the code for the robot.

This paper describes Akara 2010, the distributed shogi system that has defeated a professional shogi player in a public game for the first time in history. The system employs a novel design to build a high-performance computer shogi player for standard tournament conditions. The design enhances the performance of the entire system by means of distributed computing. To utilize a large number of computers, a majority-voting method using four existing programs is combined with a distributed-search method. Although the performance of the entire system could not be tested, the majority-voting component increased the winning percentage from 62% to 73%, and the distributed-search component increased it from 50% to 70% or more.

The ATLAS Collaboration measures the inclusive production of Z bosons via their decays into electron and muon pairs in p+Pb collisions at sNN=5.02TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurements are made using data corresponding to integrated luminosities of 29.4 and 28.1 nb−1 for Z→ee and Z→μμ, respectively. The results from the two channels are consistent and combined to obtain a cross section times the Z→ℓℓ branching ratio, integrated over the rapidity region |yZ*|<3.5, of 139.8±4.8(statistical)±6.2(systematic)±3.8 (luminosity) nb. Differential cross sections are presented as functions of the Z boson rapidity and transverse momentum and compared with models based on parton distributions both with and without nuclear corrections. The centrality dependence of Z boson production in p+Pb collisions is measured and analyzed within the framework of a standard Glauber model and the model's extension for fluctuations of the underlying nucleon-nucleon scattering cross section.

Measurements of the branching ratios of top quark decays into leptons and jets using events with tt¯ (top antitop) pairs are reported. Events were recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The collected data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb−1. The measured top quark branching ratios agree with the Standard Model predictions within the measurement uncertainties of a few percent.

This paper presents a search for Higgs bosons decaying to four leptons, either electrons or muons, via one or two light exotic gauge bosons Zd, H→ZZd→4ℓ or H→ZdZd→4ℓ. The search was performed using pp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 20 fb−1 at the center-of-mass energy of s=8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The observed data are well described by the Standard Model prediction. Upper bounds on the branching ratio of H→ZZd→4ℓ and on the kinetic mixing parameter between the Zd and the Standard Model hypercharge gauge boson are set in the range (1–9)×10−5 and (4–17)×10−2 respectively, at 95% confidence level assuming the Standard Model branching ratio of H→ZZ*→4ℓ, for Zd masses between 15 and 55 GeV. Upper bounds on the effective mass mixing parameter between the Z and the Zd are also set using the branching ratio limits in the H→ZZd→4ℓ search, and are in the range (1.5–8.7)×10−4 for 15
