Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a food allergy-associated disease characterized by esophageal eosinophilia and associated inflammation. EoE has become increasingly common in industrialized countries. However, current management strategies, such as treatment with swallowed steroids and dietary restrictions, are nonspecific or negatively impact the quality of life of EoE patients. In addition, use of more specific therapies that target immunoglobulin E (IgE) and interleukin (IL)-5 have been largely unsuccessful in ameliorating EoE. Thus, there is an urgent need to identify novel, specific immunological pathways that underlie the pathogenesis of EoE that could be targeted to treat this disease. Recently, a genome-wide association study identified that EoE is associated with a gain-of-function polymorphism in the gene that encodes thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP). TSLP is an IL-7 family member cytokine that promotes allergic inflammation by eliciting T helper type 2 cytokine responses, IgE production, and the expansion of a distinct population of basophils . However, whether TSLP directly promotes allergic inflammation in the esophagus and the mechanisms by which TSLP might contribute to the pathogenesis of EoE remain unknown. Here, we describe a new murine model of experimental EoE-like disease that was used to investigate the role of TSLP in allergic inflammation of the esophagus. Murine experimental EoE-like disease developed independently of IgE but was dependent on TSLP-elicited basophils. Critically, therapeutic antibody-mediated neutralization of TSLP or depletion of basophil populations ameliorated established EoE-like disease in mice. Finally, elevated TSLP levels and exaggerated basophil responses were observed in esophageal biopsies from EoE patients, and a gain-of-function polymorphism in TSLP correlated with increased basophil responses in patients with EoE. Design is a knowledge intensive activity, which depends on information to be undertaken. Previous designs, recent innovations, new techniques and materials must be taken into account when working on a new project, whatever its nature. Therefore, retrieving appropriate information is of paramount importance to the design process. Information retrieval is an established field, which has seen great progress in recent years. However, as the amount of unstructured information available increases, it becomes harder to retrieve the most relevant information using standard techniques and, frequently, users end up with results that don't fulfill their information needs. In this paper, we present an approach to improve retrieval using query expansion through ontologies allied to faceted navigation. We constructed the Ontoogle tool, which uses an ontology describing a domain to expand the query and define result ranking and presentation using Faceted Navigation. This proposal was evaluated in a case study and the results indicate that this approach contributes to increased satisfaction and confidence of users during their search process.

We introduce the notion of manipulability to leader-follower networks as a tool to analyze how effective inputs injected at a leader node are in terms of their impact on the movements of the follower nodes, as a function of the interaction topologies and agent configurations. Classic manipulability is an index used in robotics for analyzing the singularity and efficiency of configurations of robot-arm manipulators. To define similar notions for leader-follower networks, we use a rigid-link approximation of the follower dynamics and under this assumption, we prove that the instantaneous follower velocities can be uniquely determined by that of the leader's, which allows us to define a meaningful manipulability index of the leader-follower networks.

This study demonstrated a newly type technology of a wafer level packaging method for light emitting diode (LED) with aspheric lens and microlens array using microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology and transfer molding process. The novel packaging structure includes two components: the silicon-based packaging substrate which is formed with arrayed reflector depression and through-hole interconnects by bulk micromachining and the optical encapsulation with lens configuration that formed by transfer molding in wafer level. By this pattern transfer process, the precise alignment between lens configuration and the reflector of silicon substrate can be achieved and batch process can be realized to reduce the costs. Beside, the packaging element can be used more applications. In the study, the pattern transfer of various lens profiles was also accomplished successfully by using silicone gel as lens mold. The brightness of the packaging elements with single aspheric lens profile and high fill factor microlens array can be increased by 26% and 16%, respectively, in comparison to the case of optical encapsulation with smooth curved surface. Furthermore, the light radiation uniformity was improved effectively through 100% fill factor microlens array. Therefore, the structure can satisfy the requirements of wafer level LED packaging and improve the heat dissipation and light extraction efficiency. © 2011 IEEE.

Identifying transcription factor binding sites (TFBSs) is crucial for understanding the mechanism of transcriptional regulation. It is known that transcription factors (TFs) often cooperate to regulate genes. While traditional approaches can be used to discover binding motifs of a group of co-regulated genes, they often fail to accurately assign motifs to the corresponding TFs. Here, we consider two TFs together to infer their TFBSs and their synergistic relationship simultaneously. The basic idea is that if two TFs interact, their TFBSs, if distinct, would be conserved across species and coincided in the promoter regions of the genes they co-regulated. Applying our method to Saccharomyces cerevisiae chromatin immunoprecipitation data, we predicted 110 TF pairs with statistically significant motif assignments. A majority of these TF pairs have literature support to be synergistic, and the designated motifs to TFs match well with their known consensus. We further examined the synergism of predicted TF pairs in seven experimental conditions using ANOVA, and identified significant interactions. © 2011 IEEE.

Software development is a series of processes activity involving more than one person, especially in medium to large software projects. Each activity of software development is carried out by various combination of different individual. Collaboration occurs in every phase of the process software development. The right team collaboration method is one of the important things in success software development. This research is focused to develop collaboration model of software development to meet time schedule, budget, scope, and software quality. The collaboration model of software development is generated from survey of collaboration method (about face to face and virtual collaboration) and software development methodology especially agile methodology. The direct collaboration was used in the software specification processes, and combination (with a direct and virtual) collaboration was used during software design, implementation, and validation. Team coordination in every process of software development was done with face to face method. The same artifacts were used in this collaboration model with some collaboration software tools. Combination between face to face and virtual communication was used in this model. The model is implemented in small case software development project. During the software development, some measurement is carried out. The measurement included the measurement of project completion time, cost, software specification, and software quality. The software is developed in time schedule (two months), cost under budged, and meet specification. In addition, the software has built a fairly good quality. Thus, this collaboration model good use in software development to achieved accuracy of schedule, cost, scope, and quality.

In this paper, a novel estimation method of both revolving magnetic field and rotor radial displacements is proposed. Four auxiliary windings, i.e., search coils, are wound around the stator teeth in an induction type bearingless motor. The coils are connected to a high frequency voltage source. The middle point voltages between two search coils are processed with simple analog circuits to obtain radial rotor displacements. These middle point voltages are affected by harmonic voltages generated by a general-purpose PWM inverter connected to motor terminals. Thus, two methods of noise elimination are proposed and tested. The theoretical analysis and the successful experimental results validate the proposed approach.

As cyber-physical systems become more prevalent, specifications for these systems must be formulated in a more nuanced manner. This paper presents a particular instantiation of such specification by proposing a framework that endows robotic motions with a sense of aesthetic style. Drawing inspiration from classical ballet, poses are cast as discrete states and movements as the transitions between these states. Thus, a given movement style is encoded in the availability of transitions at each state, and the dynamics of a complex physical trajectory are abstracted as a system which moves between these states. Using Linear Temporal Logic (LTL), we are able to further constrain the set of possible sequences through the transition system and thus prevent it from evolving through a sequence of states that is physically impossible or aesthetically undesirable. Our overarching objective is to facilitate subtle degrees of control over systems as such subtleties are required, more and more, to interact in a social and aesthetically driven world.

Simulation of accidents at nuclear power plant is designed to anticipate problems and unexpected situations. In a accident a large volume of information arrives disorderly and demands that decisions be taken quickly under pressure. This context asks for a system that supports decisions made jointly by the agencies responsible for the containment of the accident which has occurred. In order to study the emergency response process, we analyze the video and audio recordings of a simulated accident at a nuclear power plant in Brazil with the purpose of identifying cognitive requirements to build a future decision support system. In this work, we applied the methodology Applied Cognitive Work Analysis (ACWA), which was created with the objective of integrating the Cognitive Task Design and Software engineering for the development of decision support systems.

In recent years, many researchers have been working in unmanned aerial vehicle to execute a large variety of tasks. The first step to reach it is the development of a sensing and communication structure capable to control such vehicles. In this context, this work presents a system designed to control a miniature helicopter during an autonomous hover flight in a platform. The proposed structure allows getting and transmitting data related to the current state of the aircraft to a ground station and transmit the control signals necessary to command it during the flight. A fusion algorithm and the strategy used to obtain the helicopter orientation using an Inertial Measurement Unit (EMU) is also presented. Finally, experimental results are presented and discussed, validating the proposal.
