Node failures in Wireless Sensor Networks composed by static sensor nodes are common due to the nature of the sensor devices and the usually harsh environments in which they are deployed. Node failures can diminish the performance of the network as a whole, thus affecting its functionality in delivering the desired services. For instance, significant regions can become uncovered due to failure of several nearby nodes. This paper reports a study about the use of mobile sensor nodes acting in cooperation with static ones in order to fill gaps created by faulty static nodes. The proposed fault handling mechanism presents alternative policies with pros and cons, depending on the user priorities imposed to the system and the occurrence of failures. A discussion about this topic is presented based on results obtained by simulation of the proposed mechanisms.

Photoplethysmographic (PPG) signal can provide important information about cardiovascular and respiratory conditions of individuals in a hospital or daily life. However, PPG can be distorted by motion artifacts significantly. Therefore, the reduction of the effects of motion artifacts is very important procedure for monitoring cardio-respiratory system by PPG. There have been many adaptive techniques to reduce motion artifacts from PPG signal including normalized least mean squares (NLMS) method, recursive least squares (RLS) filter, and Kalman filter. In the present study, we propose the adaptive comb filter (ACF) for reducing the effects of motion artifacts from PPG signal. ACF with adaptive lattice infinite impulse response (IIR) notch filter (ALNF) successfully reduced the motion artifacts from the quasi-periodic PPG signal.

Modeling large volumes of flowing data from complex systems motivates rethinking several aspects of the machine learning theory. Data stream mining is concerned with extracting structured knowledge from spatio-temporally correlated data. A profusion of systems and algorithms devoted to this end has been constructed under the conceptual framework of granular computing. This paper outlines a fuzzy set based granular evolving modeling FBeM approach for learning from imprecise data. Granulation arises because modeling uncertain data dispenses attention to details. The evolving aspect is fundamental to account endless flows of nonstationary data and structural adaptation of models. Experiments with classic Box-Jenkins and Mackey-Glass benchmarks as well as with actual Global40 bond data suggest that the FBeM approach outperforms alternative approaches.

This work proposes a bit-adjacent Data Background (DB) management scheme to improve fault coverage of March algorithms while simultaneously maintaining the shortest test cycle. Both static and dynamic DB transitions are used in order to detect Deceptive Read Destructive Faults (DRDFs) and Write Disturb Faults (WDFs) that are not detected by previous algorithms. A conventional March Test Algorithm can be modified by using the DB management scheme to form a new March Test Algorithm (referred to as Mod March Test Algorithm), e.g., MATS++(6N) becoming Mod MATS++(6N). This paper shows that Mod March SR (14N) and Mod March CL (12N) can detect DRDFs and WDFs while the corresponding conventional algorithms cannot. It is also shown that Mod March CL(12N) and Mod March SR(14N) with DB management can detect all Static Single Cell Faults based on the Bit-Oriented-Memories (BOM) test method. Comparisons on test cycle time for Mod March SR, March SR, and March SS in the context of memory Built-In-Self-Test (BIST) are also presented. From the simulation result, it shows that by including Data Backgrounds (DBs) management in Bit-Oriented Memories (BOM), the cycle test time is the same after a given multiple of DBs in the test algorithm.

A process, continuous wrapping tantalum barrier, has been developed and investigated in order to reduce the manufacturing cost. By avoiding inserting expensive tantalum tube, a long sheet barrier was directly used to wrap a prior restack. In this work, a tantalum barrier with 20 % overlap was wrapped onto sub-elements. Then 18-filament Nb3Sn plus 1 copper core restack billet was successfully drawn down and extruded into round wire as thin as a diameter of 0.84 mm. The longitudinal and cross-sectional images revealed most of barriers were continuous and intact. However, further experiments are needed to optimize the process in order to keep the all barriers continuous and intact after manufacturing. © 2011 IEEE.

We investigate the effect of a nonuniform deformation applied to one-dimensional (1D) quantum systems, where the local energy scale is proportional to gj=[sin(jπ/N)]m determined by a positive integer m, site index 1⩽j⩽N−1, and system size N. This deformation introduces a smooth boundary to systems with open-boundary conditions. When m⩾2, the leading 1/N correction to the ground-state energy per bond e0(N) vanishes and one is left with a 1/N2 correction, the same as with periodic boundary conditions. In particular, when m=2, the value of e0(N) obtained from the deformed open-boundary system coincides with the uniform system with periodic boundary conditions. We confirm the fact numerically for correlated systems, such as the extended Hubbard model, in addition to 1D free-fermion models.

A new approach for 3D acoustic imaging using a 2D receiver array and a 2D transmitter array is proposed. The proposed method utilizes synthetic transmit aperture (STA) technique and a power radiation pattern of a transmitter. The STA technique has been used in acoustic imaging for reconstructing high quality images by using a few transmission events. However, it assumes that a transmitter produces equal energy over the imaging area. This leads to a deterioration of images especially when a 2D transmitter array is used. The proposed method integrates a power radiation pattern of a transmitter into STA technique to compensate the non-ideal radiation of the transmitter. The reconstructed images from the proposed method show the improvement in terms of image quality.

This study demonstrated a newly type technology of a wafer level packaging method for light emitting diode (LED) with aspheric lens and microlens array using microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology and transfer molding process. The novel packaging structure includes two components: the silicon-based packaging substrate which is formed with arrayed reflector depression and through-hole interconnects by bulk micromachining and the optical encapsulation with lens configuration that formed by transfer molding in wafer level. By this pattern transfer process, the precise alignment between lens configuration and the reflector of silicon substrate can be achieved and batch process can be realized to reduce the costs. Beside, the packaging element can be used more applications. In the study, the pattern transfer of various lens profiles was also accomplished successfully by using silicone gel as lens mold. The brightness of the packaging elements with single aspheric lens profile and high fill factor microlens array can be increased by 26% and 16%, respectively, in comparison to the case of optical encapsulation with smooth curved surface. Furthermore, the light radiation uniformity was improved effectively through 100% fill factor microlens array. Therefore, the structure can satisfy the requirements of wafer level LED packaging and improve the heat dissipation and light extraction efficiency.
