We propose a novel optimization-based paradigm for designing enhanced classifiers. The proposed paradigm allows us to incorporate available prior process knowledge into classifier design, thereby improving the performance of the resulting classifiers. In this work, we focus on dynamical systems that can be represented as finite-state multi-dimensional stochastic processes that possess labeled steady-state distributions. Given prior operational knowledge of the process, our goal is to build a classifier that can accurately label future observations obtained from the steady-state, by utilizing both the available prior knowledge and the training data. Simulation results show that the proposed paradigm yields improved classifiers that outperform traditional classifiers that use only training data.

A process, continuous wrapping tantalum barrier, has been developed and investigated in order to reduce the manufacturing cost. By avoiding inserting expensive tantalum tube, a long sheet barrier was directly used to wrap a prior restack. In this work, a tantalum barrier with 20 % overlap was wrapped onto sub-elements. Then 18-filament Nb 3 Sn plus 1 copper core restack billet was successfully drawn down and extruded into round wire as thin as a diameter of 0.84 mm. The longitudinal and cross-sectional images revealed most of barriers were continuous and intact. However, further experiments are needed to optimize the process in order to keep the all barriers continuous and intact after manufacturing.

Concentration Dependence of Photoluminescence and Electroluminescence in 2,5 Bis[2'-(4”-Hydroxyhexanol Benzyl)-l'-Ethyl]3,4-Dibutyl Thiophenes

A new thiophene-based compound 2,5 bis[2'-(4”-hydroxyhexanol benzyl)-l'-ethyl]3,4-dibutyl thiophene (HBDT) as well as a copolymer (HBDT-PU) consisting of alternating HBDT and urethane spacer units were synthesized. Absorption and luminescence properties of both compounds were studied in solution and in different polymer matrices. Absorption and luminescence spectra of HBDT and HBDT-PU coincide indicating that emission in HBDT-PU occurs from the thiopene containing unit. Photoluminescence (PL) is emitted in the blue-green region of the visible spectrum with a maximum at 460 nm. The PL efficiency of both compounds is strongly enhanced when dispersed in a PVK or PMMA matrix indicating that concentration quenching occurs in the pure material. Light emitting devices were fabricated utilizing a PVK/PBD blend doped with HBDT and HBDT-PU at different concentrations as emitter material. The electroluminescence (EL) spectra coincided with the PL spectra of HBDT indicating that EL emission originates from the dopant molecules. The dependence of the EL efficiency on the doping concentration was measured and found to be close to the concentration dependence of the PL quantum yield.

An experiment was performed for the observation of H emission induced in a cooled laser-induced atmospheric pressure gas plasma of He atoms in their metastable excited state. The strong H emission detected clearly established, to the exclusion of other well known major excitation processes, the exclusive contribution of the He-induced excitation (HIE) mechanism. The process is suggested to take place by means of energy transfer from the excited He atoms to the H atoms via Penning collision induced ionization involving electron exchange. The result further shows that this mechanism may also work for elements other than H and thereby strongly suggests the use of ambient He gas to broaden and complement the applications of standard laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. © 2011 American institute of Physics.

This work proposes a controller to guide a miniature helicopter during a 3D path-following task, emphasizing its dynamic stabilization, while reaching a set of reference poses. The proposal includes a nonlinear underactuated control strategy previously proposed for the UAV, implemented as an inner closed loop, to stabilize the helicopter in a given reference pose, as well a path-following controller based on the kinematic model of the rotorcraft implemented as an outer closed loop. A proof of the stability of the equilibrium of the whole closed-loop system in the sense of Lyapunov is also presented. Finally, simulation results are presented and discussed, which validate the proposed controller.

This paper develops a motor-driven massage artificial electro-mechanical manipulator system with intelligent biomedical sensing-monitoring capabilities and constructs the path of massage process by using CCD image processing technique. In this paper, we integrate a versatile inter-digital electrocardiograph (ECG) into the manipulator system and construct a massage path by using twin CCD image processing technique with inverse engineering method. So, this electromechanical manipulator can automatically do the full massage process including pushing, pick-up and kneading actions to get the best therapy effect. By capturing the variant signals of the cardiovascular physiological parameters from the versatile inter-digital electrocardiograph, we can understand and analyze the physiological reaction due to the massage action and then try further to improve the therapy effect of massage. In the meantime, we have imitated a real human's palm with finger's action to design a human-like mechanical palm and accomplished the actions of massage including "pushing, picking-up, and kneading", the most decisive technique is lying on the design of the fingers. ©2010 IEEE.

A series of damage-free fabrication processes for a two-dimensional array of sub-10-nm GaAs nanodiscs was developed by using bio-templates and neutral beam etching. The photoluminescence of GaAs etched with a neutral beam clearly revealed that the processes could accomplish defect-free etching for GaAs. In the bio-template process, a hydrogen-radical treatment was used to remove the native oxide on the GaAs surface, and then neutral beam oxidation (NBO) was used to form a hydrophilic 1-nm-thick GaAs oxide (GaAs-NBO) film. The two-dimensional array of ferritins (protein including a 7-nm-diameter iron core) can be arranged well on hydrophilic GaAs-NBO film. The ferritin protein shell was removed using an oxygen-radical treatment at a low temperature of 280°C without thermal damage to the GaAs. Then, the neutral beam etched the the GaAs to form defect-free nanodisc structure of using the iron core as an etching mask. Finally, the iron oxide core was removed by wet etching with diluted hydrogen chloride and the fabrication process was completed without inflicting any damage to the GaAs. As a result, a two-dimensional array of GaAs quantum dots with a diameter of ∼7 nm, a height of ∼10 nm, a high taper angle of 88°, and a quantum dot density of more than 7×1011 cm -2 was successfully fabricated without causing any damage to the GaAs. © 2011 IEEE.

Artificial Immune Systems (AISs) are composed of techniques inspired by immunology. The clonal selection principle ensures the organism adaptation to fight invading antigens by an immune response activated by the binding of antigens and antibodies. As an immune response can be elicited even when the binding between an antigen and an antibody is not perfect, an approximate binding might suffice, and a Fuzzy Logic mechanism might be the most appropriate mechanism to control such process. This paper presents a novel hybrid model based on concepts of Immune and Fuzzy Systems with applications to pattern recognition problems. The preliminary results obtained here suggest the proposed model is a promising pattern recognition tool. © 2010 IEEE.

The real-time multi-task simulation of a 3-leg 6-DOF high performance platform system based on RT-Linux operation system is presented in this paper. The new architecture is setup by three extensible legs sliding on three linear slide-rail each actuated by a synchronous linear servo motor. The extensible legs are actuated by inductive AC servo motors. In the meantime, the inverse and forward kinematical equations describing the motion of the platform system are derived. This kind of architecture using the hybrid (linear and AC) motors yields high performance of motions, especially in speed and working space. The novel result of maximal working angles is the significant contribution of this architecture. The platform system is operated in the RT-Linux real-time multi-task executive environment, which is superior to windows, including: (a) RT-Linux real-time is hard real-time, (b) RT-Linux real-time operation system is free, (c) Multi-task can be scheduled by the optimum preemptive static scheduling algorithm. We have demonstrated the dynamic behavior of platform in the RT-Linux window and the OpenGL 3D/VR multi-medium. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper presents a comparison among different strategies to coordinate the use of heterogeneous wireless sensors aimed for area surveillance. The heterogeneity among the sensor nodes is related to their sensing and mobility capabilities. The goal of the strategies is to provide coordination among the different nodes, in order to make the wireless sensor network perform its missions with higher efficiency. Strategies combine advantages of bio-inspired and utility-based approaches to coordination. Simulations of scenarios with different characteristics were performed and the results are compared and analyzed. © 2010 IEEE.
