Purpose: For 3D transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) guided prostate biopsy, we evaluate the utility of image-similarity metrics for comparing real-time 2D- TRUS video frames to pre-acquired 3D-TRUS images in order to detect misalignment due to prostate motion and deformation. Methods: The experiments were conducted on retrospective data of 3D TRUS images from 3 subjects at the start of the biopsy procedure using a mechanically assisted 3D TRUS-guided biopsy system. For each subject, 2D TRUS images were acquired immediately prior to biopsy needle insertion. In this work, simulation and real human studies were performed to explore the utility of two image similarity metrics (normalized cross correlation and mutual information) for the detection of prostate motion during the biopsy procedure. Rigid prostate motion was simulated by translating the 3D volume in the direction orthogonal to the ground truth image, and by rotating the 3D volume around the long axis of the TRUS probe. We calculated similarity metrics for each of these simulated motion images and its corresponding ground truth image. In the human study, we performed preliminary testing of a 2D-to-3D rigid intensity-based registration method and measured its error by calculating its target registration error (TRE), based on identified anatomically homologous intrinsic fiducial pairs. Results: The registration gave an overall TRE of 2.1 mm, and both the mutual information and normalized cross correlation metrics have a convex shape near the optimal plane. Conclusions: The convex metric profiles encourage the use of intensity-based registration to compensate for motion and deformation of the prostate during TRUS-guided biopsy. The gradient of the mutual information curves are generally higher, making this metric more sensitive to the detection of small misalignments. This paper presents a new at-speed logic built-in self-test (BIST) architecture supporting two launch-on-capture schemes, namely aligned double-capture and staggered double-capture, for testing multi-frequency synchronous and asynchronous clock domains in a scan-based BIST design. The proposed architecture also includes BIST debug and diagnosis circuitry to help locate BIST failures. The aligned scheme detects and allows diagnosis of structural and delay faults among all synchronous clock domains, whereas the staggered scheme detects and allows diagnosis of structural and delay faults among all asynchronous clock domains. Both schemes solve the long-standing problem of using the conventional one-hot scheme, which requires testing each clock domain one at a time, or the simultaneous scheme, which requires adding isolation logic to normal functional paths across interacting clock domains. Physical implementation is easily achieved by the proposed solution due to the use of a slow-speed, global scan enable signal and reduced timing-critical design requirements. Application results for industrial designs demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed architecture. © 2010 IEEE.

Artificial Immune Systems (AISs) are composed of techniques inspired by immunology. The clonal selection principle ensures the organism adaptation to fight invading antigens by an immune response activated by the binding of antigens and antibodies. As an immune response can be elicited even when the binding between an antigen and an antibody is not perfect, an approximate binding might suffice, and a Fuzzy Logic mechanism might be the most appropriate mechanism to control such process. This paper presents a novel hybrid model based on concepts of Immune and Fuzzy Systems with applications to pattern recognition problems. The preliminary results obtained here suggest the proposed model is a promising pattern recognition tool.

Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are a key part of the current hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) drive system, and the sophisticated performance such as small size, high power density, and high efficiency is required to the PMSMs in the HEV drive system. Therefore, rare earth permanent magnet is generally employed in the PMSMs in order to satisfy those demands. However, rare earth materials contained in the rare earth permanent magnet have several concerns caused by uneven distribution, because the rare earth materials such as neodymium and dysprosium depend on China for 90% or more of the world share. Accordingly, the rare earth materials have the undeniable possibility of sudden rise of price or reinforcement of export restriction. On the other hand, the HEVs tend to be promoted rapidly because of growing concern about environmental problems. Therefore, it is very important to develop rare-earth-free motors for the next generation HEV drive system. This paper proposes a ferrite permanent magnet axial gap motor without the rare earth materials for the HEVs. In addition, the proposed motor structure and the analytical results with the 3D-FEA are introduced.

Virtual and augmented reality environments have been adopted in medicine as a means to enhance the clinician's view of the anatomy and facilitate the performance of minimally invasive procedures. Their value is truly appreciated during interventions where the surgeon cannot directly visualize the targets to be treated, such as during cardiac procedures performed on the beating heart. These environments must accurately represent the real surgical field and require seamless integration of pre- and intra-operative imaging, surgical tracking, and visualization technology in a common framework centered around the patient. This review begins with an overview of minimally invasive cardiac interventions, describes the architecture of a typical surgical guidance platform including imaging, tracking, registration and visualization, highlights both clinical and engineering accuracy limitations in cardiac image guidance, and discusses the translation of the work from the laboratory into the operating room together with typically encountered challenges. © 2008 IEEE.

The identification of nonlinear systems with artificial neural networks models has been successfully used in many applications. Most processes in industry are characterized by nonlinear and time-varying behavior. In this context, the identification of mathematical models for nonlinear systems is vital in many fields of engineering. The Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBF-NN) is a powerful approach for nonlinear identification and can be improved using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) approaches. This paper presents a multivariable nonlinear system identification using RBF-NN combined with standard PSO and Constriction Factor PSO (CFPSO) approaches in order to determine the RBF-NN parameters. RBF-NN is considered to be a good choice for black-box modeling problems due to its rapid learning capacity and, therefore, has been applied successfully to nonlinear time series modeling and nonlinear identification. On the other hand, PSO was inspired by the choreography of bird flocks and fish schools and can be seen as a distributed behavior algorithm that performs multidimensional search. Furthermore, promising simulation results from performance analysis of the proposed RBF-NN with PSO training approaches are presented and discussed in this paper showing promising results.

The clinical data stored in the health information system can be categorized as two types including structuralized data and non-structuralized ones. In the paper, a data extraction system is developed to assist data retrieval from the non-structuralized textual clinical documents such as radiology reports, pathology reports, etc. The system provides keyword-based and semantic-driven data matching methodology to extract the specific information from the textual clinical documents. The matching methodology provides the capabilities to recognize the selected keywords and the related semantics in the documents. Through the extraction verification interface, clinicians can extract and verify the matched information semi-automatically. The extracted data can be filled into predefined case-oriented templates. The structuralized data can be stored back into the clinical data warehouse for further analyzing. Moreover, the case-oriented templates can support collecting corresponding extracted data for various researches.

A well know problem in the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) research area is the usage of appropriate strategies to setup the sensor nodes such that they may accomplish sensing missions. This problem refers to the selection of appropriate nodes to perform the different tasks required to the missions' accomplishment and may be thus characterized as an instance of the task and resource allocation problem. Traditional approaches consider pre-planned strategies, which are not flexible to deal with changes in the network and environment operating conditions. This paper presents an enhanced agent-oriented strategy, which consists of a usage of mobile intelligent agents to disseminate missions and nodes' information over the network, as well as stationary software agents installed in the sensor nodes to provide advanced reasoning apparatus for decision making purposes. The proposed enhancement complements the original agent-based approach with robustness features required to overcome extreme adverse conditions in which an ordinary WSN presents poor results. Results from simulations provide evidences of the efficiency of the complete enhanced approach.

This article proposes to use the Bayesian network (BN) framework to support medical decision in the problem of heart beat classification in long-term electrocardiogram (ECG) records. The motivation to use the BN approach is to take into account the uncertainty present in the clinical reasoning. The case study is the classification of Premature Ventricular Beats (PVC). Specifically speaking, it is discussed the use of the P-Wave as a network node, to check its capability to improve the performance of the PVC classification. In spite of concluding that the P wave is not definitive for the classification, such results have motivated the main proposal of this work: a fusion of the results obtained by training the implemented BN with two distinct datasets, which has indeed improved the system performance.

So far, cell culture engineering has used the high-throughput transcriptional and more recently protein profiling techniques attempting to further understand and resolve significant issues regarding the cell culture performance and its optimization. At the metabolic level, flux analysis has been used to monitor changes in the metabolic state that could affect the successful outcome of cell cultures. Metabolomics, referring to the simultaneous quantification of the (relative) concentration of the free small metabolites, is the most recently introduced high-throughput method for the measurement of the metabolic fingerprint of a biological system. Considering the role of metabolism in the context of the overall cellular function, it is easily understandable why quantifying a complete and accurate metabolomic profile is foreseen to have a major positive impact in cell culture engineering research. We will present application of Gas Chromatorgaphy-Mass Spectrometry metabolomics to monitor and analyze mammalian cell culture systems. Specifically, two bioreactor processes will be discussed in which baby hamster kidney cells were cultivated in high-cell density perfusion reactors at both laboratory and manufacturing scales and samples were analyzed over the course of the cultivation. Metabolomics enabled the differentiation between cell cultures based on bioreactor type, and stage of cell growth. Multivariate statistical analysis enabled the identification of the metabolites whose change in concentration was characteristic of the modification in any of these macroscopic parameters. The acquired results support the usefulness of metabolomics as a molecular analysis tool in cell culture engineering. © 2010 IFAC.
