The performance of the message passing interface collective communication algorithms is a critical issue widely discussed in both academia and industry. In order to achieve and maintain high performance in the MPI implementations even in regard to random system behavior, the collective operations must be adapted to both the cluster platform and the workload of the user program. In this paper we propose the DYN_Alltoall, a dynamic version of the traditional MPI_Alltoall implementation, which is based on performance predictions derived from P-LogP model. The experiments which were performed on clusters equipped with different interconnect networks, infiniband and Gigabit Ethernet, produced encouraging results with negligible overhead to find the most appropriate algorithm. In most cases, the dynamic Alltoall largely outperforms the traditional MPI implementations on different platforms.

Even as the 21 st Century dawns, Taiwan has already become an aging society. As of 2007, more than 10% of the population is composed of elderly people over 65 years of age. Due to a decrease in total fertility rate to 1.1 in 2008, the proportion of elderly people in the general population will increase more rapidly in the next two decades. The increasingly elderly population, coupled with a corresponding shortage of productive manpower, means that many elderly people are living alone or without a designated caregiver during the day. In this study, a health management center with a community-based health information system platform was integrated with a community hospital and primary care family doctors to provide telehome care for elderly people with chronic diseases or disabilities.

The focus of this paper is to describe studies on pre-prepared hydrophobic CdSeS(ZnS) quantum dots (QDs) at the air-water interface. Surface pressure-area (π-A) isotherms were extensively studied using QDs capped with either trioclylphosphine oxide or triethylphosphine oxide. The role of these two different ligands on monolayer behavior and thin film quality has been investigated using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique. The thin films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fluorescence spectroscopy, and UV-vis spectroscopy. ©The Electrochemical Society.

It is proposed in this session that the interactivity necessary in ubiquitous learning can be enhanced by the virtual tutor who mediates between the learner and the e-Learning contents. Arousing students' intellectual curiosity and raising their motivation to learn are the two great goals for e-Learning contents developers. It is supposed that the interaction in the communication between the teacher and his/her students in a regular classroom can be maintained in e-Learning with the help of Virtual Tutor, which appears on the learning contents in a timely fashion to give learners advice, encouragement, reminders, and such. The session includes discussions to develop such a system making use of the most updated technology as well as demonstrations of such a system which has been experimented at Department of Media informatics. It is proved that the learning environment where human interactivity is essential can be reconstructed in terms of the proposed Virtual Tutor. This paper presentation includes demonstrations of QED as well as a discussion of the importance of interactivity in ubiquitous e-Learning. © 2008 IEEE.

A cranial window method modified for our experiment enabled to observe the cerebral microcirculation including the blood-brain barrier permeability after a local expose to radio-frequency electromagnetic fields with a monopole antenna in rats. The present report reviews our recent publications that reported no noticeable changes in the cerebral microcirculatory parameters due to RF-EMF exposure. © 2008 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

In the design process of a reconfigurable accelerator employing in an embedded system, multitude parameters may result in remarkable complexity and a large design space. Design space exploration as an alternative to the quantitative approach can be employed to find a right balance between the different design parameters. In this paper, a hybrid approach is introduced to analytically explore the design space for a coarse grain accelerator and determine a wise design point exploiting data extracted from applications, quantitatively. It also provides flexibility for taking into account new design constraints as well as new characteristics of applications. Furthermore, this approach is a methodological approach which reduces the design time and results in a point which satisfies the design goals. ©2008 IEEE.

Distance learning is a learning style that can overcome the limitation of time and space. Because of the distance, teachers can not handle the student's learning situation, and they do not know whether the student is attentive, drowsy or absent. If teachers can know the student's affective state, they can overcome the difficult. The research applies the image recognition technologies to capture the face images of students when they are learning and analyzes their face features to evaluate the student's affective state by Fuzzy Integral. Finally, teachers can monitor the student's behavior by the detection results on the system interface.

Learner attention affects learning efficiency. However, in many classes, teachers cannot assess the degree of attention of every student. When a teacher is capable of addressing inattentive students immediately, he can avoid situations in which students are inattentive. Many studies have analyzed student attentiveness by the applying of image detection technologies. If this mechanism can be applied to in-class learning, it will help teachers keep students attentive, and reduce teacher load during class. This study mainly applies fuzzy logic analysis of student facial images when participating in class. Applying fuzzy logic can prevent erroneous judgments associated with a single term, and help teachers deal with student attentiveness.

An acoustic wave actuated microgenerator for power system applications in mobile phone was design, fabricated, and characterized. We used the acoustic wave of human voices or speakerphone by way of an electromagnetic transducer to produce electrical power for charging or to run a portable electronic device. The proposed microgenerator is composed of a planar coil, a suspension plate with supporting beams and a permanent magnet. In this paper, the dynamic response of the suspension structure and the variation of the induced magnetic flux were characterized by using commercial finite element analysis and Ansoft Maxwell EM3D software, respectively. The electroplating nickel and silicon bulk micromachining techniques were used to fabricate the suspension plate and planar coil, and by integrating a permanent magnet as well as wafer to wafer adhesion bonding to accomplish the microgenerator assembly. The experimental results shown the typical microgenerator with a planar dimension of 3 mm times 3 mm, the maximum induce-voltage 0.24 mV was generated at the driving frequency of 470 Hz. The dynamic response of microgenerator can be designed to meet a specific acoustic driving frequency to increase the efficiency of energy harvesting.
