National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) launched a pilot project which exploits existing wireless environment covering medical campus, main hospital and branch hospitals. IP phones with communication applications including direct calls, broadcasting, and conferencing were provided to doctors, nurses, and staffs in NTUH. Handheld devices including PDA and tablet PC were used as user interfaces to access electronic medical records and medical images of patients at anytime and in anywhere. In this project VoIP technology integrates with a mobile hospital information system, enabling seamless and spaceless collaboration among medical professionals and administration staff to provide a continuous and comprehensive healthcare for patients in the hospital. © 2006 IEEE.

Attracting high school students to college engineering programs has been recognized as a challenge by several engineering organizations. One of the reasons for the low percentage enrolment of high school graduates into engineering programs is that many math/science teachers and counselors lack understanding of engineering applications within the subjects they teach and prospects associated with engineering careers. The instruction at the school level is often criticized for not adequately emphasizing science and mathematics, especially connections with engineering applications. Many students have difficulty connecting math and science courses to common phenomena seen all around and to future careers. This problem is further aggravated on Indian reservations in North Dakota because of their isolated locations and distance from industries. The authors developed a weekend academic program, "Sunday Academy", carried out on four North Dakota Indian reservations, to stimulate Native American students' interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), to attract to engineering programs, and to engage high school teachers and tribal college instructors in the process of developing engineering and applied science lesson plans. The academy consisted of a series of one-day academic sessions presented monthly to junior and senior high school students. The lesson plans for the sessions were developed collaboratively by a group of university and community college faculty and high school teachers. This project provided unique opportunities for engineering professors to work with high school students directly, to familiarize high school teachers and tribal college instructors with engineering concepts and approaches, and to be knowledgeable about and sensitive to Indian culture. Atherosclerosis at the carotid bifurcation resulting in cerebral emboli is a major cause of ischemic stroke. Most strokes associated with carotid atherosclerosis can be prevented by lifestyle/dietary changes and pharmacological treatments if identified early by monitoring carotid plaque changes. Sensitive monitoring of plaque changes in volume and morphology requires that 3D ultrasound (US) images of carotid plaque obtained at different time points be registered and evaluated for change. This registration technique should be non-rigid, since different head positions in image acquisitions cause relative bending and torsion in the neck, producing non-linear deformations between the images. We modeled the movement of the neck using a "twisting and bending model" with only six parameters for non-rigid registration. We used a Mutual Information (MI) based image similarity measure with the Powell optimization method as they have been used effectively in US image registration applications. For evaluation of our algorithm, we acquired 3D US carotid images from three subjects at two different head positions to simulate images acquired at different times. Then, we registered each image set using our "twisting bending model" based non-rigid registration algorithm. We calculated the Mean Registration Error (MRE) between the segmented vessel surfaces in the target image and the registered image using a distance-based error metric. We repeated the experiment with only rigid registration to compare the capabilities of the proposed algorithm in improving registration of 3D carotid US images. The average registration error was 1.03plusmn0.23 mm using our non-rigid registration technique, while it was 1.50plusmn0.50 mm when we applied the rigid registration alone

A useful learning system for human motion characters of traditional arts, such as Mai (Japanese classic dance), Kabuki (one of Japan's traditional stage arts), etc., is being developed. In such arts an effective system to pass the tradition down from a top artist to next generations is required. Video contents are generally used to pass the human motions in traditional arts down for non-experts. However, the video contents normally show the human motions as the views from a single direction. If the human motions are presented from orthogonal three-directions at the same time, it comes more useful. So, our learning system produces the three-dimensional human motion by the sequences of views from a single direction in the video contents, then, the motions from any directions can be presented simultaneously with the video *** addition, a learner can check the difference in motion between a top artist and him/herself by the producing his/her three-dimensional skeleton motion with our system and the overlapping it with one of the top artist. Here, in the comparison between two different physiques (a top artist and a learner) a simple adjustment method is *** our study standard motion capture processes are employed, but our goal is to develop an original practical training system of performers' motion for beginners in traditional arts. In this paper the developing system is demonstrated for Kyo-mai (Mai originated in Kyoto) as example. The developing system can be useful not only in performing arts but also in industry or in sports. Copyright 2006 ACM.

High-throughput generation of new types of relational biological datasets is creating a demand for network-based signal processing and pattern recognition to provide new insights. Such networks are often too large to interpret visually and too complicated to be explained solely based on local topological properties. Just as signal processing and statistical techniques have been used in traditional, sequential-based biological datasets, so too are methodologies needed to automatically discern patterns in the huge, emerging networks. One way to do this is by transforming these very large networks into discernable epitomes, or abstracts, of the original networks. This work presents an approach for doing this via topological compression. Through capturing nodes' global topologies and subsequent compression, a new network epitome can be derived. Here, this is done with an E. Coli gene regulation network, resulting in biological findings that could not be derived from the local topology of the original network.

In this paper, we investigate the properties of lethal genes in E. coli, our model organism. Topological analysis of networks of functional interactions among genes has shown that lethal genes share common local connectivity properties. In this paper, we analyze cellular networks across three domains. We show that a stochastic global topological analysis, via random walks, is more effective at predicting gene lethality than simply looking at local topology using the standard hub-based method. We also introduce the possibility of using metabolic pathways to understand lethal genes, as regulating these pathways is among one of the most important functions of the gene-encoded proteins. Additionally, we analyze lethal genes in terms of the Gene Ontology (GO) and find that the graph forms two highly connected clusters that are each GO enriched for specific terms. We also find that lethal metabolic regulators are extremely enriched. Finally, we provide applications of the work and avenues for future research.

In this paper the authors propose a structural method for a genetic algorithm (GA) for the optimization problem of cable routing in which cables have to be laid optimally. When there are no limits on the layout routes, the optimal routes for the individual cables can be found using the Dijkstra method in a finite discrete graph. However, when there are limits on the capacity in the layout routes, optimization cannot be performed using the Dijkstra method. The proposed GA is a two-level hierarchical GA that uses chromosome coding involving two levels. The routes for each cable and the combinations of cable routes are defined respectively, and layout route selection is optimized overall through genetic operations involving these levels. Block crossover and block mutation are used as genetic operations in the first level. In addition, a method to take advantage of lethal genes, which do not satisfy the constraints and are generated in the second level is used. Computer simulations confirm that the two-level hierarchical GA with these genetic operations functions effectively for the optimization problem of cable routing. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

In this research, the authors evaluate the degree to which dancers copy or follow the techniques of a master, or the degree of proficiency, by analyzing movements in traditional Japanese dance. The data used consist of three-dimensional time series for traditional Japanese dance movements acquired using optical motion capture system. In the authors' prior research, three moving coordinate systems which would move according to the translation and rotation of the body were used to extract the portion of the target movement. In this research, the authors consider a moving coordinate system which simultaneously takes into consideration translation, rotation, correction of orientation, and correction of waist tremble. In their prior research, the authors defined indices for movement stability and frequency characteristics as indices to quantitatively represent in an objective fashion the degree of proficiency of a dancer. Separate from this, in the current research the authors define an index with the spectrum component using a Gabor transform and an index for the amount of translation. The authors had a total of five people, a master from a particular dance school and four dance students of different genders and at different experience levels (all the master's students), perform dance experiments. The authors then extracted the target movements, measured the indices using the extraction results, and attempted to evaluate the degree of proficiency based on the proposed indices. Extraction was sufficiently precise, and the authors were able to confirm that the indices represent the differences appearing due to degree of proficiency and gender. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
