We present the use of the polysaccharide chitosan for immobilizing biomolecules on microfabricated device surfaces. The main advantages of chitosan are its abundance of primary amine groups and its ability to be electrodeposited. Biomolecules are easily attached to chitosan 's amines by standard glutaraldehyde chemistry. The electrodeposition of chitosan allows accurate spatial and temporal control of biomolecule placement. We have demonstrated this biofunctionalization method for two different bioMEMS devices: a biophotonic sensor and a micromechanical biosensor. We have successfully assembled probe DNA on each of them and detected hybridization with target DNA as a demonstration of sensor operation. Here, we briefly present the fabrication procedure and testing results for both of these bioMEMS sensing devices

This paper presents a design of robust load-frequency stabilizers of a superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) in coordination with a static synchronous series compensator (SSSC). As large load disturbances with changing frequency in the vicinity of the inter-area oscillations mode occur in an interconnected power system, a system frequency may be heavily perturbed and oscillatory. To stabilize frequency oscillations, a coordinated SMES with SSSC can be applied. On the other hand, variations of system parameters, several load changes etc., cause system uncertainties. To take such uncertainties into account, the multiplicative uncertainty is included in a system modeling. The structure of frequency stabilizer equipped with SMES and SSSC is a second-order lead/lag compensator. Control parameters of frequency stabilizers are automatically tuned by a tabu search. Simulation studies in a two-area interconnected power system confirm the effect of coordinated SMES with SSSC.

Most edge detection algorithms include three main stages: smoothing, differentiation, and labeling. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of algorithms in which competitive learning is applied first to enhance edges, followed by an edge detector to locate the edges. In this way, more detailed and relatively more unbroken edges can be found as compared to the results when an edge detector is applied alone. The algorithms compared are K-Means, SOM and SOGR for clustering, and Canny and GED for edge detection. Perceptionally, best results were obtained with the GED-SOGR algorithm. The SOGR is also considerably simpler and faster than the SOM algorithm.

In this paper, we discuss edge detection by first using a clustering algorithm followed by a known edge detection filter such as Canny or Generalized Edge Detector (GED). We developed a new clustering method called Self-Organizing Global Ranking (SOGR). Comparative results with multispectral satellite images including SOGR, SOM and K-Means clustering methods are discussed. The results show that the two-stage algorithms are better than single stage edge detector algorithms. © 2005 IEEE.

We consider linear quadratic optimal control for a class of pulse-width-modulated systems. The problem is motivated from a practical application - digital control of switching power converters. The control synthesis problem is posed based on a sampled data model of the original switching dynamics and a linear quadratic criterion that takes the inter sampling behavior into account. A humanoid robot under real-world environments usually hears mixtures of sounds, and thus three capabilities are essential for robot audition;sound source localization, separation, and recognition of separated sounds. While the first two are frequently addressed, the last one has not been studied so much. We present a system that gives a humanoid robot the ability to localize, separate and recognize simultaneous sound sources. A microphone array is used along with a real-time dedicated implementation of Geometric Source Separation (GSS) and a multi-channel post-filter that gives us a further reduction of interferences from other sources. An automatic speech recognizer (ASR) based on the Missing Feature Theory (MFT) recognizes separated sounds in real-time by generating missing feature masks automatically from the post-filtering step. The main advantage of this approach for humanoid robots resides in the fact that the ASR with a clean acoustic model can adapt the distortion of separated sound by consulting the post-filter feature masks. Recognition rates are presented for three simultaneous speakers located at 2m from the robot. Use of both the post-filter and the missing feature mask results in an average reduction in error rate of 42% (relative). ©2005 IEEE.

Each stage of the sewage treatment process emits odor causing compounds and these compounds may vary from one location in a sewage treatment works to another. In order to determine the boundaries of legal standards, reliable and efficient odor measurement methods need to be defined. An electronic NOSE equipped with 12 different polypyrrole sensors is used for the purpose of characterizing sewage odors. Samples collected at different locations of a WWTP were classified using a fuzzy clustering technique and a neural network trained with a back-propagation algorithm. © Sringer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Incomplete LU factorization is a valuable preconditioning approach for sparse iterative solvers. An "ideal" but inefficient preconditioner for the iterative solution of Ax = b is A-1 itself. This paper describes a preconditioner based on sparse approximations to partitioned representations of A-1, in addition to the results of implementation of the proposed method in a shared memory parallel environment. The partitioned inverses are normally somewhat sparse. Their sparsity can be enhanced with suitable ordering and partitioning algorithms. Sparse approximations to these partitioned inverse representations can be obtained either by discarding selected nonzero entries of these inverses or by precluding the creation of some inversion fills. Experimental results indicate that the use of these partitioned incomplete inverses as preconditioners results in excellent highly parallel preconditioners.

Telemedicine are the application and development of the telecommunication networks. In this study, we try to develop the telemedicine system and to discuss the network application of this system in psychiatric counseling. The preliminary result of this study is that the telemedicine system is more effective than traditional consultation and it can provide teleconsultation service for clients with depression through the internet. © 2005 IEEE.
