This volume contains the papers selected for presentation at the 14th International Symposium on Methodologies for Intelligent Systems, ISMIS 2003, held in Maebashi City, Japan, 28–31 October, 2003. The symposium was organized by the Maebashi institute of Technology in co-operation with the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence. It was sponsored by the Maebashi institute of Technology, Maebashi Convention Bureau, Maebashi City Government, Gunma Prefecture Government, US AFOSR/AOARD, the Web Intelligence Consortium (Japan), Gunma Information Service Industry Association, and Ryomo Systems Co., Ltd. ISMIS is a conference series that was started in 1986 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Since then it has been held in Charlotte (North Carolina), Knoxville (Tennessee), Turin (Italy), Trondheim (Norway), Warsaw (Poland), Zakopane (Poland), and Lyon (France). The program committee selected the following major areas for ISMIS 2003: active media human-computer interaction, autonomic and evolutionary computation, intelligent agent technology, intelligent information retrieval, intelligent information systems, knowledge representation and integration, knowledge discovery and data mining, logic for artificial intelligence, soft computing, and Web intelligence.

Arti?cial intelligence has recently been re-energized to provide the clues needed to resolve complicated problems. AI is also expected to play a central role in enhancing a wide variety of daily activities. JSAI (The Japanese Society for Arti?cial Intelligence) is responsible for boosting the activities of AI researchers in Japan, and their series of annual conferences o?ers attractive forums for the exposition of the latest achievements and inter-group communication. In the past, the best papers of the conferences were published in the LNAI series. This book consists of award papers from the 22nd annual conference of the JSAI (JSAI 2008) and selected papers from the three co-located workshops. Eight papers were selected among more than 400 presentations at the conference and 18 papers were selected from the 34 presentations at the co-located wo- shops; Logic and engineering of Natural Language Semantics 5 (LENLS 2008), the 2nd International Workshop on Juris-informatics (JURISIN 2008), and the First International Workshop on Laughter in Interaction and Body Movement (LIBM 2008). The award papers from JSAI 2008 were selected through a r- orous selection process. In the process, papers recommended by session chairs, session commentators, and PC members were carefully reviewed, before the ?nal decision was made.

FROSCH, ROBERT A.Robert A. Frosch was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research and Development on July 1
1966. In this capacity he is responsible for formulation and management of the Navy's Research Development Test and Evaluation program. In addition he is responsible for policy guidance of Navy work in Oceanography. In July 1966 he was designated Chairman of the Interagency Committee on Oceanography
which was reconstituted in July 1967 as the Interagency Committee on Marine Research Education and Facilities (ICMREF). This Committee reports directly to the National Council on Marine Resources and Engineering Development chaired by the Vice President. As Chairman of ICMREF Dr. Frosch has contributed to the national oceanographic program and to the Navy's role in ocean sciences and engineering. In November 1967 Dr. Frosch was Chairman of the United States Delegation to the Fifth Session of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission which met in Paris. Dr. Frosch entered Government service in 1963 when he joined the Department of Defense as Director of Nuclear Test Detection (Project VELA)
Advanced Research Projects Agency. In 1965 he became Deputy Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency and remained in that position until becoming Assistant Secretary of the Navy. Prior to completing graduate work
Dr. Frosch joined Hudson Laboratories of Columbia University in 1951 as a scientist. He held various positions of increasing responsibility until appointed Director in 1956 which position he held until 1963. While at Hudson Laboratories he was involved in cooperative research with the Office of Naval Research on projects in underwater sound and related marine matters applicable to undersea warfare. He took part in various seagoing research projects. He served as a member of various anti-submarine warfare and oceanographic advisory committees to the Navy and to the Department of Defense. He has written numerous scientific and technical articles. In early 1966 Dr. Frosch received the Arthur S. Flemmin
