Simultaneously execution of target detection, posture estimation, and tracking of 3D objects by Parametric Eigenspace Method embedded particle filter

In this paper, an appearance based image processing method is proposed for target detection, posture estimation, and tracking of 3D objects by Parametric Eigenspace Method embedded particle filter. In this method, the computational cost of Parametric Eigenspace Method and the tracking error can be greatly reduced by using the outputs of previous time and the preliminary knowledge of dynamics of movement of targets for a particle filter. Namely, since the particles of the particle filter can be generated in the direction where the object will be moved by using the posture estimated by Parametric Eigenspace Method for the prediction model, the accuracy of the state estimation of the object can be improved without increasing the number of particles. Therefore, the proposed method uses output result of Particle Filters and Parametric Eigenspace Method recursively and mutually for fast simultaneous execution of detection, posture estimation, and tracking of the targets. Furthermore, we demonstrate validity of our approach by several experiments. © 2009 The institute of Electrical engineers of Japan.

In traditional reliability theory, both the system and its components are allowed to take only two possible states: working or failed. On the other hand, in a multi-state system, both the system and the components are allowed to be in M + 1 states, i.e., 0 , 1 , 2 ,....M. A multi-state system reliability model provides more flexibility for the modeling of equipment conditions. In this study, we provide new recursive algorithm for evaluating the system state distribution of a generalized multi-state k-out-of-n:F system as applied to ideas of previous studies. This recursive algorithm is useful for any multi-state k-out-of-n:F system, including the decreasing, increasing and other non-monotonic multi-state k-out-of-n:F systems. We calculate and compare the order of computing time and memory capacity of our proposing algorithm with previous studies. © 2009 Taylor amp;Francis Group.

In order to introduce cognition, i.e. perception and autonomously reconfigured control, into manufacturing systems for increasing the flexibility and adaptivity this paper proposes an architecture of a cognitive safety controller (CSC). The CSC consists of a strategic controller (SC) and an operational controller (OC): the SC iteratively computes (sub-)optimal control strategies taking dynamic models, safety specifications, and learned knowledge into account. The operational controller (OC) provides certified safety by safe realization of the strategy computed by the SC. The paper illustrates the application of the CSC to a cognitive manufacturing system (CMS) in which a robot and a human operator share a workspace. Important components of this application are a procedure to compute (sub)optimal strategies for varying control specifications online and a scheme for implementing the strategy on a programmable logic controller (PLC). © 2009 EUCA.

This research aims to develop a combined sense system that uses both the sense of a force feedback as well as visual feedback in the shape of microscopic features from a micro sample. It is thought that the efficiency of minute work would be improved if the operator could obtain a sense of force while using a manipulator. We used a cantilever to touch a minute object and obtained anti-power from the degree of its bend. We made a haptic device, which gives a sense of force to the operator, who can feel the force when he touches a sample with a cantilever. In addition, when he uses the haptic device in a simulated manner, he can feel as if he had touched a sample. ©ISAROB 2009.

For concurrent consideration of reliability and safety of manufacturing systems on the one hand, and flexibility and performance on the other, a specialized control architecture was proposed recently. It consists of a strategic controller for online computing (sub-)optimal control strategies under consideration of dynamic models, safety specifications, and learned knowledge. The second building block is an operational controller for providing certified safety when dealing with behaviors that are not completely predictable, for instance in case of faults. This paper extends the architecture by a specific technique for the strategic controller: For the case of an intelligent manufacturing system which reacts adaptively to a human operator, control trajectories for a robot arm are computed online such that collision with the operator is excluded. The computation is based on solving a mixed-integer programming problem that takes a dynamic safety area around the operator into account as constraint. © 2009 IFAC.

By introducing the object cloud into topological space, the spatial relationships between fuzzy objects transform to cloud relationships in cloud space. According to cloud theory, all the spatial objects can be represented by three types object cloud: point-cloud, line-cloud and area-cloud. So the 9-intersection model of spatial topological relations proposed by Egenhofer can be extended by using the new definition of object cloud. The relationship between object clouds is flexible relationship. Different from the crisp relationship model, 9IM, the flexible relationship model by object cloud can be simplified to 4-intersection cloud model(4ICM), including to equal, contain, intersect and disjoint. The cloud operation and virtue cloud can be introduced to representing the fuzzy and uncertain topological relations. The method makes spatial data model enable to model the spatial phenomena with fuzziness and uncertainties, and enriches the cloud theory. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical engineering.

Recent trends have indicated the increased use of object oriented technology not only for the design and development of traditional software but also for safety critical software. There has been an ongoing effort for the application of traditional well documented and well tested hardware safety and reliability analysis techniques to software. Software failure modes and effects analysis (SFMEA) is one such technique that has been adopted from its hardware counter part failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA). Despite differences in operational failure modes between hardware and software, the recent research has shown the usefulness of the technique in software development process. This paper aims to: (i) highlight the application of SFMEA in object oriented design process and (ii) use the results of analysis obtained from previous step at implementation phase for improving robustness of the code.

This work emphasizes solving a design problem of two-dimensional (2-D) infinite-impulse-response (IIR) digital structure-specified filters by using an improved genetic algorithm, which is called the hybrid Taguchi-genetic algorithm (HTGA), and then uses the designed filters to the image processing. The HTGA, used to digital 2-D filters design, can provide the robust optimal solutions. In this work, the HTGA approach is effectively applied to solve a 2-D IIR digital structure-specified filter design problem and is compared with the previous design methods. The design problem of the 2-D IIR digital structure-specified filter is reduced to a constrained minimization problem the solution of which is achieved by the convergence of the HTGA. The computational experiments with the application of the designed filters to focusing the defocused image show that the HTGA approach can obtain better results than the previous design methods. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. The home network of the near future will be a heterogeneous broadband network supporting the use of wired as well as wireless transmission technologies. The variety of services will range from HDTV via gaming to emergency services in the telemedicine area. In this paper, we introduce a technology-independent protocol layer called Inter-MAC which provides a common infrastructure to all home networking devices. The Inter-MAC can establish a connection via different transmission technologies while ensuring appropriate QoS. Key to this is the capability to correctly interpret technology-dependent PHY and MAC parameters for determining QoS when selecting initial and alternative paths, as well as the feature of admission control. Our simulations indicate clearly that the Inter-MAC approach can cope with varying loads, for instance, the time the jitter needed to stabilize was as short as 4 s. The reduced QoS was not noticeable by the user since the jitter introduced by handling additional HDTV flows was less than 0.2 ms for the existing and less than 0.7 ms for the new flow. ©2009 IEEE.

Tele-care system has been regarded as one of important industry in the future. This study tends to integrate many functions in long-distance care system through the web services. For instance, integrating wireless measuring instruments and information systems helps patients in hospitals or at home to have access to complete care. When patients rest at home or do activities outside, measuring instruments may monitor their basic physiological status through the wireless transmission equipment. If an exception occurs, measuring instruments may issue a warning signal to remind, or inform the relatives and friends and even health care centers through internet automatically in order to save time. Moreover, when patients have to get in hospitals or process online interview, doctors may use the daily recorders to identify or discuss. This study uses physiological monitoring chips to measure status;now the chip can measure body temperatures, respirations and ECG physiological information. The final studies have shown questions of the hidden nodes, exposed nodes and access points. To simulate the experiment, this experiment used NS2 (Network Simulator Version 2) simulation software. As a result, the performance of network service nodes will be affected by the mode of nodes-operation. © 2009 IEEE.
