This paper summarizes the Volumetric Spatiotemporal Data Model which has been developed to manage surface movement in the Virtual Geographical informationsystems (VGIS). Volumetric is one type of spatial object in the VGIS, which is used to develop visualize 3D information. In order to develop real process in VGIS, temporal element is an important issue to integrate with 3D object. Here, we propose one spatiotemporal data model used to manage volumetric surface movement according to movement criteria used in VGIS. Time has been integrated with the data model and temporal version of volumetric surface data can be stored by using the model. This model has been implemented by developing prototype of visualization system using Triangulation Irregular Network (TIN) with integrated time in the TIN structure. Result shows that the data model which has been proposed can work with a visualization algorithm using linear interpolation and improvement TIN structure.

This study presents a novel rapid and effective point simplification algorithm based on point clouds without using either normal or connectivity information. Sampled points are clustered based on shape variations by octree data structure, an inner point distribution of a cluster, to judge whether these points correlate with the coplanar characteristics. Accordingly, the relevant point from each coplanar cluster is chosen. The relevant points are reconstructed to a triangular mesh and the error rate remains within a certain tolerance level, and significantly reducing number of calculations needed for reconstruction. The hierarchical triangular mesh based on the octree data structure is presented. This study presents hierarchical simplification and hierarchical rendering for the reconstructed model to suit user demand, and produce a uniform or feature-sensitive simplified model that facilitates rapid further mesh-based applications, especially the level of detail.

This investigation presents a novel rapid and effective point simplification algorithm utilizing point cloud without normals. Local coplanar analysis is utilized to obtain the relevant points from a point set sampled from 3D objects. The local coplanar analysis, on the basis of an octree data structure with an inner point distribution of a cube, can determine whether these points are coplanar. The relevant points, called the base model, were reconstructed to triangular mesh. In addition to the successful reconstruction, the error rate of the base model within a specific tolerance level. By using the octree data structure, this study proposes some hierarchical rendering for the base model to suit user demand and produce a uniform or feature-sensitive simplified model that facilitates rapid further mesh-based applications. Finally, output of the proposed method is a hierarchical triangular mesh that inherently supports generation of multi-resolution representations for the applications of level of detail.

Remote Sensing technologies have been widely applied to monitoring natural and man-made phenomena such as desertification, land cover changes, coastal environments and environmental pollutions. information extraction technologies from remotely sensed imagery as an important tool to understand and analyze nature phenomena on earth have been given great attention over past decades. However, only spectral information is not enough to obtain accurate information of interest in some cases, for instance the spectral values of shadows of clouds and water body can be confused easily when classification in TM imagery. Therefore how to incorporate spatial structure or spatial pattern of surface features to extracting process to improve the reliability of results has been investigated in lots of literatures. In this paper, we propose the application of multiple-point simulation (MPS) to the classification of remotely sensed imagery. In order to illustrate the advantage of integrating spatial structure information into classification process, we compare the results of Maximum Likelihood Classification (MLC) and MLC with spatial structure information from MPS in this paper. The latter gives a superior overall performance in the classification of remotely sensed imagery.
